Winter Cod Season – A Slow Start

Reports are suggesting that the 2009 winter cod season in the north east has got off to a rather slow start. Cod have been a little thin on the ground for most anglers and the lads in Whitby fishing club have struggled too with only one foul hooked cod coming to the scales in last Wednesdays match.

However things are not all doom and gloom, as those anglers who have managed to locate a fish or 2 have usually managed to land a decent fish amongst their catch. Fishing earlier in the week, Simon Bowes landed a personal best cod of 6 pounds 2 ounces from Sandsend Cliffs, and then yesterday local angler Garry Watson managed a single cod of 7 pounds 14 ounces from Boulby.

Although the start to the season has been slow, it is hoped that northerly swells in the coming weeks bring the cod to our shores in abundance. To keep up to date with the north east winter cod fishing scene please keep an eye on our fishing forum where up to the minute angling reports are posted all the time.

Also keep an eye on our heaviest fish of the month competition sponsored by Whitby Angling Supplies. Garrys 7lb cod currently leads the way, but a bigger fish could easily be caught by the end of the month
