Well said richard mr tyreman knows very little about what goes on in the north sea and about the massive destuction of cod over the years by the commercial sector they have tons of cod quota every year that is only what is landed on the fish quay but the discards especially at this time of year what is thrown back dead is nothing short of criminal we now have anglers onboats counting single cod to put in log books these clowns in brussels have really gone mad .

The breeding stock of any species should be left alone. Charter boats should not be aloud to fish the wrecks as this is where the breeding fish live. It looks like boat angers will soon be on quotas so this should help fish stocks too. Boat anglers have been guilty of taking too many fish over the years and now its coming back to bite them. Catch and return is the best policy.

It would appear that Mr Tyreman has no idea about the mass destruction of cod which the commercial sector has taken over decades. Does he not realise that the tens of thousands of boxes of cod taken commercially were from the rough ground and not the wrecks, the biggest killing times being during the herring spawning seasons. Before comment perhaps he should realise that the matter of a single fish caught on rod and line as opposed to the "Hundreds" of boxes taken by a trawler after a 4 hour tow doesn't even bare as a comparison as to the reasons behind the depletion of the cod stocks over the years. If the fish aren't on the rough ground in the first place how are they to even find the wrecks??? Also might I just try and get Mr Tyreman to imagine for a moment the % of cod caught during their spawning season ( each of them carrying hundreds of thousands of eggs ) January - March, by trawlers, when the majority of charter boats are laid up ????????????

Oh dear what a strange take on the fish stock decline around our coast but you are entitled to you opinion but please don't preach catch and release on our site every angler who fishes from association boats has the right to keep legal size fish for his own use or release them as he chooses without feeling guilty of wrong doing what ever his choice

Well its a beautiful fish. Who would believe that all these years later there would be very few fish over 10 lbs swimming in the north sea. The Charter fleet at Whitby has a lot to answer for. Day after day for years on end they have taken boxes of fish from the many offshore wrecks. This fish and all the others should have been put back to continue breading the future populations of Whitby cod.
