Sandown Pier Isle Of Wight – British Shore Caught Bass Record Is Smashed
The long-standing British shore caught bass record has been smashed with a 19lb 11oz 12dr cracker, which was taken from Sandown Pier on the Isle of Wight, last night (Saturday).
The fish was taken by local angler Steve Caves, who was fishing a whole squid bait.
The fish, which is now at Scotties tackle shop in Sandown, measured 36 inches long and beats the long standing shore caught record of 19lb, a fish caught way back in 1988 from Dover breakwater.
The fish was weighed twice on the pier at 19lb 12oz and then in the tackle shop at 19lb 11oz 12dr.
Steve Cave who caught the new UK Record Bass has been slated on many of the UK’s Fishing Forums for actually killing the bass with some unhappy anglers claiming he only killed the bass to claim a record and that the bass should have been returned to fight another day. Unhappy with the comments about his record bass in the Whitby fishing forum Steve Cave Signed up to defend himself. Steve says :
hi all
I’m Steve cave
I’m the fella that cought this monster bass
i didn’t kill it just to get a record it was like any other fish in size and tasty.it was going on my table, just like what most other sea fishing Ppl do with there catch.
its held out that far cos it was heavy no other reason, I’m not digging at any 1 its not my style, but it looks like iv got to take all the crap lobed at me for catching a British record at 11pm not Noin it was a record until laterbut i spouse thats my fault for no Noin everything
any way for your info the fish has been given to the natural history museum so you can all go and see it if you like
theres my 2bobs worth
tight lines Ppl but dint put hooks on and bait.trust me its not worth the s##t that you will get if you get a record catch

i am chuffed to bits that the recored got broken, it goes to prove that there are massive fish out there, and i am so envious of you for catching such a dream fish, i am coming the the isle of wight this week to give it a go and see what i can catch, i would be so happy to catch 1 half the size, well done mate and tight lines!
This is prime breeding stock and probably female given the size so in the perfect world she should have gone back. However, it would take a significantly bigger man than me to chuck her back if I caught her so well done to you sir. I thought the days of these fish were well and truly behind us so its great to see. Who knows, maybe her sister is lurking out there…
Hi Steve a
awesome fish mate f**k what everyone one else says the fish dont say sorry when there striping our hooks of expensive peeler crab and letting us blank a session. so F**k what any on else thinks you sat on the beach in the middle the night to catch that bad boy well deserved tight lines
matt
awsome fish….wouldnt ind catchin 1 like it. good luck 4 the future!
CHRIS
hiya people
many thanks for your comments
iv got over all the bull shit now.im still fishing hard on shore in my boat ad on my kayak.still not catching much on shore tho with the trawlers still netting too close in tho
tight lines peeps and have fun
steve cave
Superb catch mate, you shouldnt even be answering the criticsm, your not a commercial fisherman so you were there to catch fish that God put in the sea….and all that. Dont even rise to them, they aare not worth it mate, fishing is not a sport, its a way of living. Tight Lines.
Its annoying that people who fish for profit or mantelpiece Silverware should even trouble you, you obviously dont mess fish about for cash or trophies, well done mate, catch some more and invite me round for massive fishermans pie and pints of cold wine.
brilliant fish well done…
This fish should really have been returned. What a very irrespobable thing to do given the current state of UK fish stocks. This selfish action is contributing to the death of sea fishing in our country. Think twice next time.
I have just taken a 13 lb 6oz fish and I believe that a such a fish of approx 30 years of age is as I am …..”over the hill” when it comes to procreation. The young buck bass are out there to further the species.
All the “put down” merchants should perhaps think twice about their moaning. Maybe they should turn their attention to the commercial liners and netters who do infinitely more damage the individual could ever do in a lifetime of angling….and then some.
Well done for such a cracking specimen. Sorry you didn’t get to eat it.
Tight lines!
Harvey
Well done m8 if you did not claim it some one else would have when they got the fish. If not it would of end up being sold at a fish market at some time. All i can say is i would not know what i would have done if i got that fish. Its a hard one me and my m8s keep thinking about what we would of done if we were to have a fish of that size…………….
Tight Lines
ash
AND WELL DONE
GOOD ON YA M8, THE CRITICS CANT TELL ME THAT THEY WOULD OF PUT IT BACK IN THE SEA, THATS A LOAD OF BULSH-T, I BET THEY STILL EAT THERE COD AND CHIPS AT THE WEEKEND AND DONT STAND OUT-SIDE FISH AND CHIP SHOPS TELLING PEOPLE DONT BUY THE FISH, IF I OR MANY OF MY MATES HAD CAUGHT THAT BASS, RECORD OR NOT, WE WOULD OF KNOCKED IT ON THE NAPPA STRAIGHT AWAY, DONT THESE GOOD DOER’S GET ON YA (0)(0) AT TIMES, TIGHT LINES M8 AND POST YOUR NEXT BIG FISH ON THIS FORUM……… RAY THE CODFATHER.
Fancy killing such a specimen. That is a prime breeding stock fish and you have stopped it from creating the next generation of bass. Hang your head in shame.
Lets have a little perspective here. One fishing line, one big fish (and a lot of patience and passion to get it..) no trawler, no drift net, no commerce. No inflated fishmonger/supermarket pricing and….. dinner for twenty no doubt. Fantastic. Ye lucky fukr.
Mike Mayweather get over it
i bet u go to your local fishmongers every week to get your
bit of cod or your bass were do u think they came from
i bet they r good sised fish but the trollers net 100s of them
we sit on are ass for hours for waiting for a take
but we only keep 1 or 2 10-15 pound fish in a life
time
dan
i was lucky and its a night ill never forget ;d
steve
Steve, hats off to ya mate what a cracking fish! Im yet to catch a bass so im looking forward to hunting them down this year! Give me a few 3 or 4lbers and ill be happy. If i caught a fish like that id have no doubt, its going home with me.
all the people who have to take the piss for taking such a big fish from the sea have never had a fish on there line of that size to start with of any bread. i am a corse fisherman and have been all my life. at only 29 thats not long but iv landed some monsters in my time. some have gone back some have gone on then table.i think anyone who thinks that this fish is the only one of that size in our seas thay must be pissed.
One man, One Rod, One cracking fish. I would have killed that fish just for the glory of holding a record. Bass stocks are possibly declining? I dunno they might be getting more spread out? I dunno. But what I do know it is not anglers. Its gikll netters, commercial fishermen and the EU that is to blame for anything like that. So I am off to catch a bigass bass and when i do i will humanely whack it on its shnorker because it has probably spawned more than 99.9% of fish anyway.
personnaly i am gutted to see such a magnificent specimen killed. not having ago at the captor, or anyone else. well done for catching it mate.
mick.
Hey Steve its Steve Cave here across the pond in CA. 3 yrs ago I caught a 12lb 5oz large mouth bass I can only imagine what it was like to catch on like that. Keep on catchen the big ones good luck. Steve Cave in the U S
cheers steve cave

Nice fish mate. As far as the criticism goes the unwritten rule is 36cm or 37.5 cm for taking home. Since yours is 3 feet i dont think you have a problem. Good fish mate and fuck em all. Like everyone decent person above would admit, it would be in the bag!
i am a very keen angler on the island mainly fishing for bass my biggest bein 12lb 2oz im now well on a mission to beat this fish of yours steve! haha im hot on the trail for your record! what an absolute amazin feat to land such a magnificent example of what could wander past ur rod on the islands shores it gives me butterflys in my stomach to imagine what must of been goin through ur mind when u first saw what was on the end of ur line! an im sorry but not even god himself would of return that bass bk to sea i know i wouldnt of! lol tight lines buddy ule be hearing from me real soon when u hand over the record!! lol every mans entitled to dream!! lol
Well done on such a catch.
Everyone please stop hounding on about returning it…….. it was over the LEGAL limit.
People do go on about dwindling fish stocks when the fish they buy from the supermarket is trawled.
POT,KETTLE,BLACK
nice fish once again,
tight lines….very tight lines!!!
hi all
nearly 2 years now and im still holding the record ;d
come on lee get ya finger out bud i dont want this record for 20 od years
steve
What a fish
I was on the beach at perranporth last week and the thought crossed my mind as to what i would do with the
monster Bass of a lifetime.
Kill it or Keep it???
If it was possible to return it alive i would do, after the photo session,
but if not then humanely dispatch it.
Maybe it will be my turn one day to actually have to make that decision, untill then i will keep fishing looking for that elusive 20 pounder.
Well done mate tight lines

UNBELIEVABLE, As sea anglers we all with the exception of a very small minority eat some of our catch, there can only be one reason why people have given you a hard time and that is JEALOUSY, believe it mate I’m jealous, I would have weighed it for curiosity before eating it, as it was dead you have done what you thought was the right thing, how can anyone knock you, the closest I ve been is my missus caught a 10lb bass at Wigtown, Scotland. It was the best tasting fish weve ever had.
Until the claiming of records is changed HOW CAN ANY ONE KNOCK A SPECIMEN HUNTER, the do gooders should be trying to change the record claiming process or scrap the records.
Surprised I have only just come across this.
Regards
Maurice
I hate to see these stupid remarks re putting this fish back in. Generally we as anglers go after preditor type fish because usually we’re going to eat it after we catch whatever. The people who are knocking this very addept angler should be ashamed of themselves but as Falkus once said there are some aanglers too ready to find out what some of us are doing and stop us from doing it -even if it is entirely legit. The same goes for some stupid objectors near Tomintoul who could not catch salmon but condemmed anglers who could catch them just by being different but entirely legal in their fishing techniques. These grislers don’t deserve any curtesy whatsovever. They do not deserve my money either. STEVE — Keep doing what you are doing with an absolutely clear consience you’re fishing style is to be applauded.
I’ve just read all the comments after writing my ‘bit’ above and it seems clear there are few so called fisherment out there with some very funny ideas and of course it’s best to ignore them because their comments don’t mean much to ordinary folk. Such as it is they must be usually well off and can easily buy what they want to eat from the fish mongers…..
I meant to say yes I’m pretty sure there are big fish out there because my mate & myself were both broken on 20lb line only last week in Wales. Clive Gammon used to say the biggest record breaking Bass in Wales must surely be there in the particular places we fish. Well done Steve.
that is an amazing bass i wud av done the same at the end of the day people say it sud stay in there r mad so there pritty much sayin thats the only big bass there bulls**t u cought it u deserve 2 do with it how u please
p.s i wanna catch 1 that big haha
Message for Steve – the captor,
Well done Steve – that’s an awesome fish! We have just got back from the island and my kids would be well impressed to see a brittish record breaking angler on the site (and I would too of course). We stayed at Rookley for the carp fishing but we did have a dabble off the pier and caught some small wrasse. I can’t wait to show them what they COULD have caught! Tight ines!
Just come back from Whitsands in Cornwall and i was catching 2 pound bass for 4 days loved it for the crack .I returned all of them but i bet you know if i cought that badboy it would be on my plate ,Nice one m8.
