The Humminbird 798c SI Combo – GPS SONAR
Kayak Fishing, electronics Wednesday, February 11th, 2009NEW 50 CHANNEL GPS SIDE IMAGING SONAR
STAND N32L AT THE LONDON BOAT SHOW (9-18th January)
The latest model of Side Imaging Sonar from Johnson Outdoors UK uses a 50 channel GPS/WAAS receiver to give lightning fast position fixes accurate to within 2.5 metres. The Humminbird 798c SI Combo, part of the user-friendly 700 series of fishfinders, also incorporates Humminbird’s unique side imaging sonar system. This gives outstanding pictorial images of the seabed scanning up to 240 feet either side of the boat.
The new unit is available with either an internal or external 50 channel GPS receiver which can sweep the sky faster for satellite signals. It is also more sensitive so it can keep a fix when the signal is poor, for example when going under a bridge. The internal GPS is mounted at the top of the control head allowing the sonar to be flush mounted with no obstruction causing reception issues. Alternatively the unit can be fitted with the Tilt & Swivel Quick Disconnect Mounting System. Like all Humminbird fishfinders these units are totally waterproof. In side imaging mode the depth capability is 150ft and in conventional mode it is 1500ft. Side imaging sonar gives 180° scanning coverage beneath the boat; in conventional sonar mode the Dualbeam PLUS™ Sonar gives a narrow 20° and wider 60° beam coverage fanning out from beneath the boat scanning an area equal to the depth of water below. All models in the 700 series have 5” screens and the 798c SI Combo has a new higher resolution 640 x 640 pixelcolour display giving a picture clarity which is far superior to competing products. All 2009 700 series models also feature three preset buttons so users can switch quickly between preferred screen views. They work in a similar manner to the preset buttons on a car radio, so for example if you have a favourite view such as a split
screen with chart map and sonar image you can access it at the touch of a button.
Another enhancement with the 798c SI is dual card readers. A Navionics chart card can be placed in one slot and a blank SD card into the other to record routes, waypoints and screen snapshots. Popular add-ons such as CannonLink for controlled depth fishing are
available or there’s WeatherSense which monitors barometric pressure trends over the past 12 hours. A new High Accuracy GPS receiver is also available giving position fixes to less than one metre. This is a compatible upgrade for units in the 700, 900 and 1100 series. The Humminbird 798c SI Combo is priced at £1149.
