The European Commission wants to curb the amount of fish that recreational anglers catch, with proposals for ‘big scale’ boats to record their catch.

The EU Article 47 proposes to introduce a quota for the sea anglers of Europe. This would mean that UK anglers would be drawing from the same quota pool as commercial fishermen. When the quota runs out anglers must stop fishing. In comparison to the take of the UK fishing fleet, the catch rate of sea anglers is minuscule. To expect sea anglers to pack up fishing after the commercial fishermen have used up all their quota is an insult. Loss of angling related income will be the only outcome for the sea angling industry.
