Fishing With A Pirk By Rupert Drury
With the growing popularity of “shad” fishing,...
I have recently switched to Snowbee granite waders from Ocean Chest waders which I had been using for the past 10 years (Obviously not the same pair). I decided to switch this winter as a protest to the spiralling price of Ocean waders. This year alone saw a jump in price of ocean waders of £18. A price rise too much for me.
I have now been using the snowbee granite waders for around 4 months. On the whole I am pretty happy with them. There are both pluss and negative points to these waders. Worthy of note is that they are extremely warm to wear which is great for winter fishing. Ive never been so warm and this is a great plus point for neoprene waders over the rubber ones. Conversely because they are so warm they make you swet like mad. Often the insodes of the waders are wet when you take them off, then next time you wear them they are often still wet. Another negative is there is little room for manouver in Neoprene waders. Becuase they are tight to your clothing you do not have a lot of space in them to move about. This makes things tough for anyone who likes to rove about when angling. Rock hopping and cliff climbing is difficult and I now seem to expand a lot more energy climbing to and from my favourite marks, I attribute this largely to the tightness of the waders – admittedly Im getting older every year too but thats a different story.
One large plus for the studded snowbee granites is the spike studs. They are imense and give great grip on slippy rocks and scars. I have been informed that the spikes do wear out quite fast. Mine are ok at the moment but I will be keeping an eye on this. So far I rate the grip of these waders very highly.
In summary the snowbee granite are a decent set of waders. They are very warm to wear and offer good grip when walking on slippy surfaces. However you are prone to overheating in these waders and they hold swet in the neoprene which is difficult to dry out. They are also tight to wear in comparison to rubber waders such as the oceans, this makes it difficult for the roving rock hopper and cliff climbing angler. Im still undecided if I would buy another pair. Only time will tell.
