Repairing A Fibre Glass Kayak – Kaskazi Clinic

The subject of durability regards the Dorados has been brought up a few times now, thought a few might be interested in what to do if you bash em.

Although GRP is not as durable in a crash as plastic its certainly more repairable.

Buzz discovered that his rocket had a small crack in the keel, at first he thought it was just the gel coat and repaired it with plastic padding gel coat, but the crack reappeared so we enlisted the help of a neighbor of mine who is a retired boatbuilder who confirmed that the crack would need grinding out and repairing properly.

The main problem with this was that the area was not accessible from inside and he felt that it needed to be repaired from the inside to keep it strong.

Our solution was to cut an access hole in the well and install a new hatch that also increases the below deck storage and allows the c tug to be carried inside.

The crack after grinding away  outside

inside

fiberglass repair from inside, clear resin was used, white would have looked nicer

new hatch

and the finished repair outside

the new hatch is so good I am thinking that i may install one in mine straight away.
