Hall Of Fame - Quint Catches The Biggest Bass To Date

After being knocked off the top spot in our hall of fame Iain Sellors aka quint was keen to regain number 1 spot in the kayak fishing bass section.

kayak fishing for bass in yorkshire

Prior to their launch from a Yorkshire coast bass mark Iain was confident of a big fish and this became reality when he landed an 8 pounds 4 ounce bass on his favourite lure the maria chase angler kiss in makerel.

Kayak Paddle For Charity

Posted under kayak fishing by News Admin

Annual Eddystone Challenge - Kayak Paddle For Charity

eddystone challenge

OK here is my version of the masochism.

Well, we went, we entered and we didn’t disgrace.

Because at the start there was 35 knots of wind off the end of Mountbatten pier, the event was on the rough water course, up the Tamar, round a marshall boat and back, out the gap between Drakes Island and Cornish shore (Mount Edgecombe) out through the western end of the breakwater, across the outer sound, back in the eastern end and home to the start.

The conditions were already serious and the start, at 12.00, was more or less on low water….within 20 minutes. We had a southerly force 7 and the last of the ebb against it.

The starting hooter went off and we all set off together, solos, doubles, gigs and rowing skiffs. Ken was in the Skua (he had come down from Yorkshire!) and me in the Marlin. The doubles and rowing gigs and skiffs disappeared into the distance quite quickly. We held our own with the better solo kayakers adn even stayed with two of the doubles for about 8 miles.

The first mile was across the wind and tide. It was a bit choppy but nothing untoward. 4 foot waves maybe. As we turned to go up the Hamoaze and put the wind astern the Marlin started picking off the faster sea kayaks - flying with the wind and down the back of the waves. Ken in the Skua was with me having a ball, surfing the waves and getting a reallly good drive. It was his first time ever in this kayak….and he was now getting to grips with it, she is very forgiving and pretty quick really. We were staving off even the dedicated sea kayakers and they were rather amazed that the SOT was keeping up. I even stayed alongside one double all the way, and we were chatting away to each other!

At the turn mark, a RIB moored with a big M flag flying (M for marshall), we overtook the rest of the solos and were even up with a couple of the doubles! BUT, then we hit the now southerly full gale and the spring tide flooding. It wasn’t in full flow yet, but the tide was building. Fighting against the wind was bad enough, but with the tide building all the time and the fastest section of the tide yet to come we were all struggling.

Ken edged away over to the Cornish shore and found a good bit of respite from the tide. I had followed a local but he went ashore and wasn’t looking for an easy route…my mistake! So I saw Ken making good progress up the other shore and the double we had overtaken on the mark fairly flying past him. I needed to be over there. So i fought my way right across the river just above Saltash and sure enough, after about a 1 mile ferry glide across the now fast flowing tide I managed to get out of it and was able to follow Ken and the doubles route. We were out of the worst of the wind and tide but the rain was still horrendous. I forgot to mention that it was pouring with rain….my Palm gear was USELESS. I was soaked through inside, not from sweat - I was cold - from the rain just coming straight through.

We made some good progress up the Cornish shore and when we got to the Torpoint Ferry had to come out into the flow to go round the ferry. Then we split again. I went across to the dockyard side and Ken made the better decision, he stayed on the Cornish shore and went a longer route, but with less tide flow. I started to cramp up from the wet and cold. My shoulders weren’t burning so much as feeling like they were tearing and they literally just went solid with cramp. I was now shivering from cold even though I had paddled about 12 miles, and 5 of those miles against the conditions, working d**ned hard. My shoulders just cramped solid and I couldn’t even move my arm to use the VHF on my PFD. I couldn’t get my hand to it, my shoulders just wouldn’t move. I tried to struggle on with the paddle, not swinging it properly, but getting some blade in the water and managed to get myself into a small basin in the naval dockyard, out of the wind and tide, so was able to do some stretches on the kayak and cleared the cramp. I tried to paddle and went back out into the tide and made it a bit further, but it was agony - so I shouted for a safety boat to come and pick me up. I was only 1.5 miles from the finish too. They had shortened the course because the conditions had deteriorated even more - we were to go out through the Sound, round the breakwater and back to start. The shortened course was literally just round the corner and across The Sound back to Mountbatten. There was no way I was going to get through the run off Devils Point. I wouldn’t have been able to make it on flat water if truth be told. I was totally finished. I had plenty of drink with me and had taken on 3 litres. I finsihed the last litre and just waited to be picked up by the safety boat - they arrived with 3 kayaks already onboard. At least I wasn’t the only one to be rescued I thought.

As they took us back to the club I could see Ken with the leaders, he looked ot be making good progress, but he can’t of been in as good shape as he looked from what he says. He was just about to break out of the shelter and go across the gap between Edgecombe and Drakes Island. I stayed on the shore because I expected to see him round the corner at any time, not knowing he had beached and was as shattered as I was. I saw the others that he had stayed with arrive, but no Ken. I heard on the radio that the safety boats were still picking up other solo kayaks at the turn mark - plenty of the others hadn’t even made it back to the Tamar Bridges, we were 4 miles further than them at least and with reports on the VHF that someone had capsized in the Sound I hoped it hadn’t been Ken.. Then I saw the Skua coming in on the safety boat and I heaved a sigh of relief - he was OK.

Ken was only 1000 yards from the finsih when he was picked up, but he too, was totally exhausted, both mentally and physically. He put the Skua up the beach and just fell out. He got picked up by a safety boat too.

Out of the 36 starters, all but 4 of the solos were taxied home. Those few that made it were the ones who knew where to go to keep out of the tide. In the narrows off Devil’s Point it runs through at 6 knots - and we were mid tide, but not only with the full bore of the tide, also the gale force wind with it - there was no way anyone could paddle against that, you would need to be able to paddle at 8 knots to make any progress at all and after the distance and gruelling up tide/up wind slog it was simply too much.

We loved it though. back in the rowing club we were both buzzing, and emotional. We got under the heat lamps and had hot showers. 2 competitiors were taken for treatment with severe hypothermia IN AUGUST for heavens sake.

It was a brilliant event and I am glad we did it. The Marlin was the only SOT in the event - and I got further round the course than all but the doubles and those 5 solos, one being Ken in the Skua. So the Marlin held its own. Ken did a fantastic paddle and I think if he knew how close he was to the finsih that would have given him that bit of uplift to get all the way round. When he looked in the morning at just how close he was to the finish line……but witht he rain and blown spray, you couldn’t see it, the visibility was down to about 300 - 400 yards.

We are going to have another go next year, and this time we will do some proper traiing for the event - the furthest I have paddled this year up until the event was the tope bash in Yorkshire, a round trip in the day of 10 miles. That was just the equivalent of the downwind leg! I think a bit more than about 6 or 8 outings before the event will be needed. The funny thing is, had we had the conditions to go to the ‘Stone it would have been easier and I know we would have finished going on our performance up the river.

A few 30 milers will be needed before hand and regular 10 milers, in one hit, not 5 miles, then fish, then home. Solid 10 mile paddles. Oh, and anyone know about food and diets and stuff? I felt I could have done with more energy in my muscles - not put in on the day, I had flapjacks for immediate use. I mean building up the glycogen reserves for a week beforehand.

The next day I did the course with just a short paddle and even felt OK doing the rescue demos. I didn’t expect to be able to get back in, but there was no stiffness. Which surprised me. I expected to be aching all over. Maybe the heat lamp and hot shower did the trick. The Naval nurses were great fun and game for a bit of sport!!! A good hot meal that evening back at my mums and we felt much better.

Its a funny thing, the kayak side gets to you too you know - it becomes more than just a way to go fishing, even though that is the first requiremnt. Doing this kind of thing just gets you able to go further for better fish!

Simon

NFSA Yorks Div AGM 2008

Posted under national federation of sea anglers - Yorkshire Division & nfsa yorkshire & nfsa & National federation Of Sea Anglers by News Admin

Chairman: Tony Burman    Treasurer: Cath Breeze

Minutes of the ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING on Saturday 28th June 2008 at the Tiger, Lairgate  Beverley

      • Members Present: Phil Arnot, John Amery, Tony Burman , Steve Breeze, Cath Breeze, Lorraine Bateman, David Bateman, Murdoch Mann Colin Middleton, Barry Welch and Stuart McPherson

Item 1 Opening of Meeting

The meeting was opened at 1130 by the Chairman, John Amery, who welcomed the delegates especially the members of the Meltham and District  S. A. Club who were attending their first meeting since the resurrection of the Division.
Itam 2.  Apologies were received from the following:

      • Paul Jefferson, David Swift, Gwyn Davies, Graham Asquith, Jean Amery, Chris Banks Nigel Proctor and Rob Neale.

Item 3. Minutes of EGM held 16th July 2007.

The Chairman informed the meeting that the Minutes had been circulated and if everyone was content he did not propose to read them at this stage. The minutes were accepted as a true record Proposed Phil Arnott Seconded Stuart McPherson.
Item 4. Matters arising,

There were no matters arising.
Itam 5. Charman’s Report.

The Chairman outlined the development of the Division over the past year from its previous demise due to the decline of the SACs across the area. He emphasised that the political scene, with the proposed sea licence looming, had galvanised the initiative to resurrect the Division and indeed a great deal of the meetings over the past year had been directed at the political issues. However even prior to the Ministers decision to withdraw the spectre of a licence being announced he was concerned at the lack of support/attendance at the meetings, which had steadily dwindled as the year progressed. He was mindful that whilst we should not loose sight of the political  issues that there was more that the Division needed to do to strengthen the voice of sea angling in the area. He pointed out that we had some of the best sea-angling coastline in our catchment area and a very large proportion of the nations sea-anglers were resident within our boundary. The potential for the Division to grow and flourish was there. Reluctantly however he was standing down as Chairman. He had agreed to be caretaker chairman for a year at the EGM but as he lived in Preston it was not practical for him to continue. He stood down reluctantly as he had been a founder member of the Division when he was resident in Yorkshire.

A discussion followed in which several of the delegates voiced their deep concern at the lack of support that had been received from the head office. In particular the lack of direction/ support to encourage the deployment of the official coaches to promote our sport. It was also felt that to generate interest more attention should be given to organising competitions.

The Chairman accepted that there had been difficulties in the past, mainly due to under staffing at the Head office. He pointed out that there had been a complete change of staff and with the potential of the formation of Angling Unity he expected matters to improve significantly in the future. We had during the year tried to arrange both a Boat and Shore Competition and he agreed that this was essential but had been curtailed due to the political issues. However he emphasised that we should not loose sight of the political issues as they were ever present. In closing he said that he was pleased with the enthusiasm that had been expressed during this early part of the meeting and considered if that was developed the Division would flourish and he wished it well.

Item 6. Treasurer’s Report

A revised set of Accounts was circulated at the meeting to include the interest that had accrued over the year. The final balance indicated that there was £545.46 held on Account.

Item 7. Appointment of Officers.
Chairman: Tony Burman Proposed Murdoch Mann Seconded John Amery

Vice Chair: Phil Arnott Proposed Stuart McPherson Seconded Tony Burman

Secretary :  Stuart McPherson Proposed Tony Burman Seconded Phil Arnott

Treasurer : Cath Breeze Proposed Dave Bateman Seconded Murdoch Mann

Conservation

Officer:        Phil Arnott Proposed John Amery Seconded Tony Burman

Standing

Committee

Representative:  Pending*

*Stuart McPherson is currently on the Standing Committee in his capacity as the Board member representing the North. The Committee felt that this would provide the necessary continuity until the new committee became established.

Item 8. New Committee assume their role.

Phil Arnott opened the proceedings by expressing the Committees appreciation to both John and Jean Amery for the contribution that they had made in getting the Division off the ground. He thanked John in particular for the many hours that he had contributed and the long late night journeys that he had undertaken to ensure that the Division was re established.

Stuart McPherson in adding his appreciation said that we should also express a vote of thanks to Gwyn Davies whose efforts prior to the EGM and subsequently as Secretary had also contributed considerably to the work of the Division over the past year.

Phil Arnott then said that we would be remiss if we did not thank Jean Amery for the work she had done as Treasurer during the past year and it was agreed unanimously that this should be so.

Item 9. Adoption of Divisional Rules.

The Sec. Outlined the problems that the Committee had experienced over the past year in obtaining a quorum to mandate the proceedings. The NFSA Rules authorised Divisions to create Divisional Rules for the good management of the proceedings. A Draft of the proposed Div. Rules had been circulated with the Agenda and Head Office had had a copy. The Div Rules would be read in conjunction with the National Rules and the only variation was that a Divisional quorum had been set at 6 instead of 10 and that any member attending a meeting would have the right to vote. This did not detract from a Club Representative using the Club’s block vote.

The delegates accepted the proposal without amendment. Proposed Steve Breeze Seconded Colin Middleton

Item 10 Minutes of the General Meeting of 21st April 2008

The Minutes had been circulated prior to the meeting. They were accepted asa true record. Proposed Stuart McPherson Seconded Phil Arnott.

Item 11. Matters arising.

The Sec. Reported: Flamborough Liaison The meeting on the 24th April had agreed that the area from Dane’s Dyke to a point near Sewerby Steps for a distance of 700 mtrs. From the cliff base offshore would be the designated NTZ. Natural England had wanted the distance offshore extending but the group had vetoed this. The next step is for the NESFC to draft a Byelaw.

RSPB Code of Conduct Bempton. A meeting had been held with local Anglers and the RSPB and a revised Code of Conduct had been drafted. The Chair of Bridlington Shore Angling Club will forward the Committee a copy when it is to hand (Action Sec to advise in due course.)

Filey Brigg Nature Reserve. Whilst not on the minutes the Sec. Advised the Committee of concerns being expressed by local RSA’s of a proposed LNR (Local Nature Reserve) being created at Filey. He had liaised with the Chair Of Filey SAC and the Countryside Officer at Scarborough Borough Council and had received assurance from the latter that the proposals for the LNR would not restrict RSA’s access to the area and in particular on to the Brigg.

Fund Raising John Amery asked if any one had ascertained from Nigel Proctor what was happening with the Boat Competition. A negative response prompted the Chairman to say the he would take this on board. He also agreed to seek support for the organisation of a Shore Competition.(Action Chairman)

It was agreed that we should retain the Barnsley Wreckers name on the Trophy they provided and allocate it to a competition in due course. Dave Bateman stated that Meltham SAC were still in contact with some of the Wreckers and it would be worthwhile trying to get them involved especially if we get inter club matches organised by the Division.

Item 12. Standing Committee Report.

The sec. Informed the meeting that the SC Minutes had been circulated. The following were brought to their attention.

Item 4d. The meeting was advised that we had be assured that the Divisional Assets were sacrosanct and would not be absorbed into the Angling Unity Accounts if the were to proceed.

Item 4c. There was a suggestion that Divisions should purchase their own Display equipment. However we have access to a set of equipment being retained, by John Amery, for use in the North. It was agreed that we would take no action on this at present (The Chairman stated he would investigate a supplementary source.) (Action Chairman)

Item 7e  There was a proposal on the table that the mls for bass be raised to 45cms by the NFSA to mirror their recommendation to the Minister, which sadly failed. The meeting agreed unanimously that this should be adopted.

Item 13. Divisional Administration

The Committee agreed that in view of the change of Officers that the Account currently held on behalf of the Yorkshire Division by John Amery should be transferred to a new account. Consequently the Treasurer and Secretary were instructed to open such an Account and that the two signatories should be the Treasurer and The Secretary. (Action Treasurer/Secretary)
Item 14  More action required in promoting coaching skills.

The Chairman reiterated his earlier comments regarding the lack of use of the approved coaches and the severe lack of direction and support that the NFSA were giving to this valuable resource. Several members endorsed his comments and it was agreed as a Division we should encourage the use of the six or seven coaches in the Division especially involving them with young anglers. The Chairman, Vice Chairman and Secretary are attending a meeting with the Humber Sports Partnership on Monday 7th July and the outcome of that may influence the direction we adopt. (Action Secretary to report)

Item 15. The Resurrection of the Big Town Challenge Match

Dave Bateman suggested that the lack of competitions organised on a Divisional basis was detrimental to the encouragement of members to participate at meetings. The Chairman and several other members endorsed this. Agreed that a higher priority be given to organising competitions and one option would be a competition along the lines suggested. (Action ALL)
Item 16. Clarification of Insurance Cover.

Lorraine Bateman sought clarification regarding the insurance cover for Club Members. Meltham SAC have a condition of membership that each member be a direct member of the NFSA. They do supplement their Insurance cover through the NFSA to ensure that the Club is covered on the four occasions a year that they arrange boat angling competitions for local children. It was pointed out that in order for the cover to be valid for these event the Head office had to be advised prior to the dates that the events occurred.
Item 17 Update on progress in merger with Angling Groups.

Lorraine Bateman asked for an update and John Amery informed the meeting that he had not heard anything further to that which was outlined in the papers circulated with the national AGM Agenda. Obviously with that only being three weeks away it was probably then when the next update would be available. (Action Sec to report)

Item 18. Any Other Business

The Sec reported that he had made a tentative approach to a major tackle outlet with a view to them providing facilities for a mail drop to those members not on e-mail. The Committee approve the proposal and authorised the Sec to progress it and report back, (Action Sec to report)
Item 19. Date and time/venue of next meeting.

The Sec proposed that we adopted a two monthly meeting cycle i.e. six meetings as opposed the four per year currently. This suggestion was in order that we can expedite the actions and accelerate the development of the Division. It was agreed in principle as long as there were actions to expedite but the dangers of it stagnating without actions were an area of concern. The next two-month cycle would drop it in the “holiday period” so the next meeting was provisionally arranged for 27th September. The venue and time will be confirmed

NFSA Letter From Tony Burman

Posted under national federation of sea anglers - Yorkshire Division & nfsa by News Admin

YORKSHIRE DIVISION

Chairman: Tony Burman     Treasurer: Cath Breeze

18 August, 2008

Greetings to you all.

Just a few lines to let you know basically what is happening and who I am. My name is Tony Burman, I am from Cleethorpes and have been fishing for 40 years. At the AGM I was voted in to become the new Chairman of the Division. This to me is a great privilege. I am very enthusiastic about sea angling and have been involved in clubs, both boat and beach, for many years.

I am also a qualified coach to level two, as are several other members of the Division and this is an area that is not being used to good effect at present. I intend that we will improve this situation, especially to encourage young anglers. It is vital to get more people interested in the sport. I would also like the Yorkshire Division to be more proactive and on this note it is proposed to hold the top town match at Grimsby in November, I will confirm dates and details once they are finalised.. There are a few charter boats and also many of the members of the Humber Cruising have got good sized boats.  The Humber Cruising Association has also got a very good social club that we can use after the match.
I do not want the Division to be a talking shop, and just have meetings for the sake of it. If there is nothing to discuss what is the point of a meeting?  On the other hand if there is a lot going on and especially if it something that is going to affect our sport then it may be beneficial to have more meetings.

I genuinely think with the new committee on board and Stuart McPherson as secretary that the Division will move with a great pace.

Some of you may not yet have renewed your membership, there will be many and varied reasons for this. I appreciate that this is a very personal decision but can I encourage you to perhaps have a second thought. The fact that the spectre of the rod licence has apparently gone away may have lulled you into the believe that the need for a “voice” has diminished. I can assure you it has not and there are a number of other concerns that need to be addressed to protect our sport. We need a strong Federation and we can only achieve this with your support.

The next meeting of the Division will be at be at The Duke of Cumberland, High Street, North Ferriby, Hull at 1330 on Saturday 18th Oct

at 1330 on Saturday 18th October 2008. High tide is at 1800 with a height of 7.2m so we have timed the meeting to give those who wish a chance to fish after the meeting. We had intended to hold the meeting at Bridlington and organise a Divisional Competition but due to the local authority restrictions on “events” we will have to address how we can cater for their requirements at the committee meeting. This is just one of the concerns I alluded to at the previous paragraph.

We have also negotiated a Discount from Chapmans Angling Hull on all items except bait to callers at the shop.  You will receive details from Chapmans through the post. Your details have not been given to Chapmans so the Data Protection Act is intact. They will only capture your details if you buy online.
I am very approachable and if you have problems or want to discuss any of my comments, feel free to ring me on 01472 239209

                                  Regards

           Tony Burman

RSA STRATEGY RESPONSES TO THE CONSULTATION

RSA STRATEGY RESPONSES TO THE CONSULTATION

The Governments response to the RSA Strategy Consultation which took part earlier in the year has now been published along with a full list of names for those who responded. The RSA Strategy response document can be viewed here.

There are several things to note from my first reading of the document.

  •  Although Defra say they have decided not to go ahead with plans for a sea angling licence at the present time, this document makes it clear that they have not moved away from the idea all together. The sea angling licence could be back to bite us in only a few years time.
  • Defra still plan to press forward with their plans to introduce a sea fishing bag limit for the countries sea anglers. This is made quite clear on page 13 of the document - I quote -

Enabling powers for bag limits have been proposed in the draft Marine Bill, to apply to persons fishing from the shore (whether commercial or recreational) and from boats. Powers to introduce them are already available to Sea Fisheries Committees and have been used in relation to shellfish. Bag limits can be an effective conservation measure in certain circumstances. Bag limits also form part of the range of tools used to manage fisheries in other countries where there is a strong promotion of sea angling. Any use of these powers would be subject to full consultation and sea anglers would therefore have the opportunity to comment further on this subject in the future.

River Camel Salmon Poachers - Bailiffs On Mountain Bikes

Posted under environment agency news & conservation by News Admin

River Camel Salmon Poachers - Bailiffs On Mountain Bikes

Environment Agency officers in Cornwall have taken to the saddle to catch salmon poachers and licence dodgers on the River Camel.

The switch from motor vehicles to mountain bikes has proved highly successful and not only helps river bailiffs with their fisheries enforcement work, but is better for the environment.

Environment officers Phil Christie and Claudine Fontier regularly take to two wheels to patrol the banks of the River Camel. The work includes checking rod licences and looking for signs of illegal fishing or pollution.

The pair can often be seen on the Camel Trail, a popular cycle route used by thousands of visitors every year to explore the countryside between Bodmin and Padstow. The Camel is an important salmon river that has been targeted by poachers in the past.

‘Cycling along the Camel Trail may seem like a pleasant way to spend a summer evening, but is actually a very effective method of covering a long length of river quickly and getting to remote locations that would otherwise be difficult to access,’ said Paul Mitchell for the Environment Agency.

‘It is also environmentally friendly and helps keep our carbon footprint down by reducing the number of miles driven while providing our officers with some valuable physical exercise,’ he added.

Phil and Claudine’s riverside patrols have already taken a number of anglers by surprise. Fishermen should always take their rod licence with them so they can produce it if ask to do so by an Agency bailiff.

A photograph of Phil Christie and Claudine Fontier on their trusty steeds is available from the Environment Agency regional press office. For further details call 01392 442008.

Southampton Boat Show 2008

A brand new MK 2 Broadblue 385 will be available to view at the PSP Southampton Boat Show 2008. Broadblue Catamarans are delighted to announce a series of upgrades to their highly successful Broadblue 385, following input from distributors, agents and owners.

Comfortably outpacing the French 38ft catamarans in last year’s ARC, the 385 was actually conceived as the most compact multihull in which a couple could sail the oceans. Since her launch Broadblue 385 has rapidly become the catamaran of choice at this size.

As you may expect with a yacht of her calibre, she comes with a generous specification, the changes are small but significant;

· In the cockpit, the double helm seat is now standard, and a larger cockpit table will be positioned aft of the helm seat. The seat/step on the port side allowing access from the cockpit to the coach roof has now been mirrored on the starboard side, while the area on the helm step has been increased, giving better access to the mast and sail controls
· On deck all new black framed windows with blue tinted toughened glass is now standard, as is the electric anchor windlass
· The 385 must be one of the easiest 38 foot boats to sail, but we have enhanced this further with a Harken 40ST halyard winch, mounted on the kingpost, with a bank of Spinlock clutches controlling halyards. The mainsheet will have a new two part design, allowing control from the helm position
· The interior has not been forgotten, LED interior lights are now standard as is an automatic shower sump pump, and electric discharge to the standard holding tank. Finally, a pull-out double berth replaces the single berth midships in the starboard and port hull.

Marine and Fisheries Agency Funds New Quay

View from underneath a quay

The Marine and Fisheries Agency allocated £118,000 from European grant funds to the fishing industry for the new fish quay at Brancaster Staithe - half the cost of the project.

Chief Executive of the MFA, Nigel Gooding said: “I am delighted that the MFA has been able to award this grant to help secure the future of Brancaster’s fishing industry. It is an excellent example of people working in partnership to secure important EU funded grant aid for the benefit of the community.”

Speaking at the official opening, Richard Winborn of the MFA said: “This new quay is testimony to this funding partnership but also a credit to the drive of Cyril Sutherland and Simon Letzer of the Brancaster Staithe Fishermen’s Society and to Simon Garnier and the National Trust for supporting their local fishing industry.

“We have provided a modern facility for a traditional fishery. I am told that there has been a quay here for over 250 years. The unique blend of wild fisheries and aquaculture that you now have here is a fine example of sustainable inshore fisheries producing a high quality local product.

“We are pleased to be funding partners with the East of England Development Agency, King’s Lynn and West Norfolk Borough Council and the National Trust.”

The Marine and Fisheries Agency awarded the European Union grant for the building of Brancaster New Quay as part of its support for English commercial fishermen.

The MFA has awarded grants to build harbour structures like Brancaster, to modernise fishing vessels, for new safety equipment, and for ways to improve working conditions for fishermen; and grants for on-shore projects to improve the processing and marketing of fish. Grants range in size from several hundred to several million pounds.

For more information on the Marine and Fisheries Agency and the role it plays in the UK’s fishing industry and the marine environment visit the MFA web site www.mfa.gov.uk.

£250 Fine For Illegal Angler James Taylor

Fishing for trout out of season proved a costly mistake for angler James Taylor after he was caught in broad daylight.

On February 19, 2008 Taylor was spotted fishing with a rod and line near Abbey Weir on the River Tavy at Tavistock. An Environment Agency bailiff asked him what he was fishing for and the defendant said trout. He was using a worm as bait.

Taylor produced a valid rod licence, but was reminded that the licence clearly states fishing is subject to close seasons and that on the River Tavy trout fishing is prohibited between October 1 and March 14. The purpose of the ban is to protect fish during the breeding season.

Taylor, of Madge Court, Tavistock was today fined £250 by Plymouth magistrates and ordered to pay £75 costs for fishing for trout with a rod and line during the close season, contrary to Section 19(4)(b) of the Salmon and Freshwater Fisheries Act 1975. He was also ordered to pay a £15 victim surcharge. The case was proved in his absence.

Dieing Salmon In River Wye

1000 young salmon and trout (fry) found dead in the Rhyd Hir brook

Environment Agency Wales are investigating the cause of death of nearly 1000 young salmon and trout (fry) in the Rhyd Hir brook, a tributary of the River Wye in Rhayader.

Officers who attended the site collected samples of dead fish which have been sent to the Environment Agency National Fisheries Laboratory.  A post mortem examination is underway.

A 600 metre stretch of the brook has been affected on the outskirts of the town.  Water samples have also been taken and sent for analysis.

No impact has been detected on the main River Wye and initial survey results suggest that the invertebrate species on which the fish feed have largely been unaffected.

Salmon Fishing On The River Nene

After being absent from our local rivers for decades, a salmon has been filmed swimming through a fish pass which the Environment Agency installed at its Dog in a Doublet sluice on
