Illegal Bass Netting In Nursery Areas

Illegal Bass Netting In Nursery Areas

Chichester, Portsmouth and Poole Harbour Bass Poaching

In recent times our government have set up bass nursery areas where it is illegal to catch bass from a powered vessel. However an alarming report from the south of the country claims the current laws are all but unenforcable, and bass poaching takes place from the nursery areas most days of the week through the bass fishing season.

In an article on the BBC website entitled “Sea Bass Poaching” Fisheries Officer Pete Hill says: “We can hardly touch the surface of it”.

In the same article the Bass Anglers Sportsfish Society spokeman John Leballeur claims “people abusing those very areas for greed is totally out of order.”

To read the article in full and view a video on the topic of bass poaching in nuresry areas please visit the BBC site here.

Ocean Kayak Front Hatch - Potential Flooding Problem

Posted under kayak fishing

Ocean Kayak Front Hatch - Potential Flooding Problem

Several weeks ago I read on the Whitby fishing forum of a forum member who had encountered problems whilst undertaking a kayak remount exercise. The forum member stated that a small piece of cord had become stuck under the front hatch which then allowed the kayak to fill with water once it was capsized in the water.

For more info on Fudges story - please click here.

More recently I came across another kayak angler who had experienced the same problem. This time I spoke to the guys in question as they were returning to shore having rescued their friend from the water. Again the front hatch had leaked making it impossible for the angler in question to get back on the yak unasissted. Also once back on the yak the bouyancy had gone and the guy required help of the other 3 members of his paddling party to get back to shore.

You can read about this here….

Since the guys told of their story on the fishing forum, yet another member reported of the same problem. Forum member Bagpuss told the following story.

Guys
I had a similar experience a few weeks ago. I capsized on a relatively calm day, I had been out with a mate & he had just gone in & driven off from the beach. When out of nowhere I was flipped out of the kayak (prowler elite). I tried to self rescue four times but couldn’t get back on the kayak without it tipping me off again as I tried. A couple of main reasons for this.
1) The kayak had taken on gallons of water through the front hatch & each time the kayak was upside down it took more water in. I didn’t realise that this had happened until some time later when back on shore.
2) I was wearing Palm sidewinder bib & brace dry suit trousers & a Gul dry kag top. I had undone the neck seal on the jacket & when I was plunged under the water the whole lot filled up with water.

To cut a long story short with a dry suit full of water, a kayak half full of water & my strength being zapped by the exertion of self rescue, the cold water & trying to swim ashore with the kayak tethered to me. The wind was blowing offshore, the tide was running offshore.  Two hours later I was picked up by the lifeboat & taken to hospital suffering from hypothermia.
I e-mailled Ocean Kayaks & was told there was a seal for the front hatch that could be purchased as an extra. Unbelievable really the hatch leaks but you can buy a neoprene seal to stop that happening. Shouldn’t it be standard. Anyway i got one off them.
Not a pleasant experience. A lot learnt & it hasn’t put me off but has made me a lot more wary of how easily thing can change.

Illegal Bass Fishing - Lowestoft And Jersey Skippers In Court

Catherine Annie LT 45 and L’Ecume II J158 Skippers Fined

Sussex Sea Fisheries District Committee News Release

Fines and costs totaling over £ 9,000 were imposed by Chichester Magistrates on the 8th of October when two trawler owners were again convicted of breaking fisheries legislation which is designed to protect inshore fish stocks of black bream and sea bass.

Mr. David Waldron, 60, of Lowestoft and Mr. Michael Michieli, 48, of Jersey, skippers and owners of the fishing boats Catherine Annie LT 45 and L’Ecume II J158 pleaded guilty to the offences of fishing within 3 miles of the shore with vessels over 14 metres in length. Both defendants were fined £3,000 and ordered to pay towards the prosecutions costs.

The Black Bream the skippers were targeting are particularly susceptible to over exploitation by these large craft as the fish exhibit some very interesting reproductive behavior. In the spring many thousands of fish migrate to the shallow waters off the Sussex shores to spawn. Adult male bream excavate ‘nests’, depressions in the gravel, in an attempt to attract awaiting shoals of females: a female will then lay her eggs in the most ‘attractive’ nest. Certain areas off the coast are covered in bream nests, so much so that the seabed can be likened to the craters seen on the moon! The male bream, with a nest of eggs, will spend weeks tending to the clutch until they finally hatch. Given the vulnerability of this species during spawning it is important harmful fishing practices are restricted by fisheries regulations which are vigorously upheld.

On the 28th May 2008 Sea Fisheries Committee Fishery Officers who patrol the inshore waters off the Sussex coast intercepted the fishing vessels pair trawling c. 1.5 nm off Littlehampton, and ordered them to stop fishing on the sensitive inshore habitats within the Committee’s 3 mile limit. Senior Fishery Officer Robert Clark commented “Committee officers undertake boardings and inspections of fishing vessels in often very challenging conditions and they spend a considerable amount of time enforcing regulations to try and ensure the sustainable exploitation of the bream fishery. I commend the actions of the officers in this case for securing the evidence against these illegal fishermen. I know they have the support of the local fishing fleet and anglers by bringing these criminals to justice”

The proceedings were the latest in a long series of prosecutions undertaken by the Sussex Sea Fisheries Committee against the skippers of these trawlers. In November 2005 in the same court both individuals received fines and costs exceeding £10,000 which related to three similar offences. It is increasingly clear that such fines are not a deterrent to fishermen and the Sea Fisheries Committee wishes to see powers to take more affective action in cases where perpetual offending takes place these could include confiscation of fishing gear or loss of fishing rights.

Commenting on the case, Tim Dapling, Chief Fishery Officer of the Sussex Sea Fisheries Committee said “This illegal activity threatens this important fishery which occupies such a sensitive ecological niche and whilst I am pleased that the magistrates recognised the severity of these fishermen’s activity by imposing these fines the case demonstrates that there is a need for tougher sentencing powers to act as a more definitive deterrent where repeat offenders flout laws designed to protect the long-term health of the fish stocks. We look to the draft Marine Bill to provide for the legislative power to stop habitual offenders and ensure fines in such cases sufficiently high so as to end continued illegal activity”

Invisible Fishing Weights

Posted under Sea Angling News

Invisible Fishing Weights

Tulsa, Oklahoma - August, 20th 2008 - Avo Invents have developed the worlds first invisible and environmentally friendlier alternative to traditional lead fishing weights/sinkers.

Our Invisible weights have been selling in the UK and Europe since the 1st September 2007, with great success, they were predominantly aimed at the carp angler, we have since then completely redesigned the weights to suit the US market. We currently have the bullet shape in approx 1/2oz and egg shape weights in 1oz, different sizes coming soon. What makes our product so unique is not just the fact it’s invisible, but the fact we can make it virtually the same density as lead and still be crystal clear. Diamond Sinkers are treated with an anti glare coating to minimise the glare from the sun when in use. We have patent pending for the product, process and technology involved. We have distribution set up in the US and aim to start selling the weights to most fishing tackle shops by mid October 2008 and prices are expected to be around $3.95 per pack of 3.

Diamond Sinkers Give the angler more of a chance to catch fish….. That’s clearly better!

Avo Invents is a UK and US based company who develop completely new and innovative products for the fishing tackle industry. We are currently working on 36 new shapes for both sea fishing and freshwater angling.

Shrimp Fishing In Morecombe Bay Hit By Too Much Rain

Fishermen in Morecombe bay are catching fewer shrimps this year because the rain has diluted the salinity of the sea.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/7655967.stm

Posts on some of the fishing forums claim that the reduction in shrimps is due to over fishing of the species in previous years. What do you think ?? Please leave your comments below.

Ian Wood Boat Competition - Alan Charltons North East Report

Posted under Sea Angling News

Alan Charltons North East Fishing Report

JOURNAL SEA ANGLING FOR 3rd OCTOBER

Ian Wood Boat Fishing Match

A cracking day and some cracking fish, with Brian Wilkes fishing aboard “White Diamond” taking the best of a sixty fish haul, which included over twenty double figured fish, a beast of a ling of 19lb 8oz to win the Ian Wood boat competition. If it had been down to looks then it would have been Norman White’s cod that would have taken the day. Deciding to have a drop just 200 yards off the piers in his boat “Slinky Kate” with a little pink muppet baited with ragworm, Norman landed a beauty of a cod 16lb 8oz, just ahead of Bill Campbell with a ling of 16lb 7oz taken aboard “Star Dance” Gareth Thomas won the under 20 foot section with a cod of 8lb 14oz.

North Region CIU Match

The same day Dave Swift won his first major event taking three cod from Cresswell Carrs, for 9lb 6oz 8 drams to win the Nth Region C.I.U. match, Steve Potts taking the heaviest fish of 4-4-6 from the Big Bondi Carr.

Ryhope Open Fishing Match

Carl Foot may have lost 168lb in weight over the last year but his fish of 1530grms (3.37lb) taken at Marsden won him the top prize of £500 in the Ryhope Open, with Gary Warwick second with a wrasse of 1200grms taken at Whitburn. Apparently 7 year old Adam Harriman’s face was a delight to see as he collected his prize for winning the junior section with a flounder of 530grms, Jackie Feeney winning the ladies section with one of 550grms. Jim Dobie took the heaviest bag of 4 flounders, including the heaviest a cracker of 935grms (2.01lb) and an eel for 3215grms (7.08lb) Jim followed this win up taking a lovely bass of 5lb 1oz from Hendon Bandstand, to win Eastenders sweepstake, Chris Hossack taking a cod of 4-14-0 from Roker Pier. Quite a few codling around the Ryhope area, the top four places in their sweepstake going to codling, Gary Warwick taking the best at 2.46lb. Andy Wright had a canny pleasure session on South Shields pier, using Sabiki feathers, Andy took fifteen sizeable coalfish. Ronnie Thompson winning Cleadons match from the Tyne with 3 cod, best 2-1-0 & a whiting for 4-1-0. North of the Tyne Alan sprat won Seaton Sluices sweepstake with six cod for 11-8-0 taken at amble, Jimmy Dunne taking the heaviest of 4-8-0 in his bag of five for 8-14-0. Some nice Pollock being taken from Craster Tony Rutherford fishing aboard “Bon Amy” taking two of 9-2-0 & 8-2-0. As the sea roughened boat catches have dropped with the best catches around forty fish with cod and ling to 12lb.

Commen Fisheries Policy Review - Bass Press Release

‘Don’t Lose this Chance’ says BASS

BASS are urging the Fisheries Minister, Jonathan Shaw, to adopt a strong position ahead of the review of the Common Fisheries Policy by 2012.  BASS are demanding that UK national and regional legislation created for the protection of our close-inshore fisheries apply to all vessels fishing within the UK’s 12 mile limit, whatever their nationality.

2012 may still seem a long way off, but there is much work to be done to agree the UK’s position in readiness for the next formal ten-year review.

Of all the issues that most concern both anglers and inshore commercial fishermen, the amount of access allowed to other EU nations to fish-stocks within close inshore waters probably causes the greatest concern.

Although the previous review in 2002 allowed EU nations to create their own conservation rules within their own 6 to 12 mile zone (to which some other country’s fleets have ‘grandfather rights’ of access), such rules can only apply to foreign vessels with the agreement of those nations, and the EU.

This has led to UK conservation rules such as those preventing pair-trawling for bass, and the protection of tope, both prized sport fish, only applying to UK vessels, whereas foreign boats fishing alongside UK boats close to our shores are not subject to such restrictions, considerably weakening the effectiveness of such legislation.

Of even greater concern is the reluctance of fishermen and Sea Fisheries Committees to adopt conservation measures within our own six mile limit (which is reserved for UK licensed vessels only), when foreign boats fishing only just outside the current six mile limit can legally ignore such measures. It was this situation that allowed the UK commercial sector to oppose the increase in the bass MLS from the current 36cm (650 grams) to 45cm (1 kilo).

BASS Restoration Project chairman John Leballeur said “It is essential for the adoption and effectiveness of UK fisheries conservation rules that they should apply to all, and that UK fishermen are not put at a disadvantage when trying to protect the valuable inshore stocks upon which both anglers and commercial fishermen depend”

“It is time to beef up the UK position to ensure a lasting legacy that will improve our fishing in the years and decades far beyond 2012”.

Posted under shark fishing

GET your jaws around this catch of the day.

Fishermen trawling for prawns off the coast of Tynemouth were in for shock when they netted this ocean beast.

The 7ft porbeagle shark was brought ashore and is now catching the attention of shoppers at the North Shields Fish Quay after it was snapped up by Seaview Fisheries.

It is the second shark of its kind to be caught in a month and will soon be served up to customers as tasty steaks or the Chinese delicacy tail fin soup.
