Match Fishing - North East Round Up

Posted under North East Round Up

Guernsey Final Win For Alec Harvey

Cramlington angler and Cono Flex team member Alec Harvey won the prestigious Guernsey Championship Final fished over two days on the Island of Herme. With fishing split each day from one side of the Island to the other The match was fished on a catch and release points basis Alec amassing a grand total of 560pts, taking no less than 49 wrasse, 4 garfish and 5 mackerel, with the wrasse all being taken on Sea Bait ragworm, which Alec nearly ran out of even though he took twenty boxes. Alec was well ahead of Rob Marshall of Taunton with 495pts, 40 wrasse, 1 Pollock, 1 bream and 7 garfish, and Phil Thomas of bath with 400pts, 6 garfish, 5 mackerel, 2 bream and 27 wrasse. Wrasse made up most of the winning bag in the Newbiggin Open with Gavin Owen fishing in summer like conditions at Beadnell took five plus a cod for a weight of 13lb 15oz 2 drams to win £1,000. John Ord fished the Beacons to take second place with three cod for 8-14-10, with Paul Westmoreland third with three cod for 7-15-8 taken at Beadnell Point. There where also some nice cod taken Andrew Hooper fishing at St Mary’s took the biggest at 6-8-6, with Aaron Brown taking one of 6-2-4 from Newton, followed by junior winner Cory Robinson with a cod of 5-9-12 taken at Lynemouth. Matthew Holdroyd was the junior runner up with two flounders and a turbot for 2-4-12, Mathews Turbot of 1-8-4 being the heaviest flatfish, taken at Embleton. Gavin and Steve Potts won the team event with 18-1-4, with John and Steve Cochrane second with 13-11-8. Altogether 369 fished, 101 weighing in 69 cod, 40 wrasse, 38 flounders, 1 dab, 3plaice, and a turbot. The calm conditions for a couple of days have certainly made it feel like summer with plaice, turbot, bass, and dogfish reported from Teesbay and a cracking thornback of 9lb taken from Saltburn Pier. The Durham beaches have also given anglers good mixed bags. Hopefully the rougher weather will bring the codling inshore. Boat anglers made the most of the good weather last weekend with some good ling coming aboard Sarah JFK, Jimmy Cassidy taking two of 25lb and 19lb, with Ian Haughton taking one of 22lb on another trip. With Sean Bell taking one of 24lb aboard Warlord fishing out of Amble. Most catches of up to fifty fish have been mainly made up of ling, but there have been a few cod to double figures and some nice Pollock to 8lb. Travelling anglers have been taking some decent conger, well into double figures from the breakers yard at Loch Ryan, if you are travelling, mackerel have been scarce so I would suggest taking some with you.

Kayak Fishing AT The Southampton Boat Show

Lots Of Interest In The Ocean Prowler Trident 13 and 11

A GREAT SOUTHAMPTON BOAT SHOW FOR
JOHNSON OUTDOORS UK

Johnson Outdoors UK is once again delighted to report that they have had an extremely successful Southampton Boat Show. Despite the economic climate outside the Show, the weather at this, the 40th Show, was generally the best we’ve had this summer and the appeal of versatile affordable craft from Johnson Outdoors was as strong as ever. “We had a brilliant Show and the Saturday of the last weekend was one of the busiest days I think we’ve ever had at any Show,” commented MD Andrew Dron. “Throughout the Show we also had a lot of our dealers placing new orders for craft and marine electronics which visitors had seen at the Show.” This year many new models of canoes and kayaks were on display and the popularity of kayak fishing in particular is increasing all the time. “We had a massive amount of interest in the new Ocean Kayak Prowler Trident 11 and 13, which are the smaller siblings to the Prowler Trident 15 fishing kayak,” added Andrew. “We’re also very grateful to all the members of the Anglers Afloat forums who came along to the stand and provided a great opportunity for kayak fishing enthusiasts to get expert advice.”
As ever there was also a fantastic choice for families who want to get afloat. The latest kayaks in the Vapor series from Old Town offered the perfect choice for anyone looking for user friendly recreational kayaking. And for those aspiring to the ultimate composite touring craft the new Chatham 16 Carbon Kayak from Necky proved irresistible. “This was probably the most touched boat at the Show,” said Andrew. For all types of canoeing and kayaking, the colourful new Pacific Action Kayak Sail Systems were also a real focal point. These lightweight sailing rigs are easy to handle and offer great versatility.
In the dedicated marine electronics trailer by Ocean Hall there was everything from portable fishfinders and entry level sonar to Humminbird’s award winning Side Imaging units. Retailers at the Show recorded strong sales of the 797c² (right) and the 787c² Side Imaging units. It was also announced at the Show that the new Humminbird big screen 1197 Side Imaging unit, which won the Innovation Award for Marine Electronics at Seawork, has also been short listed for the Fishing News Awards. The results are to be announced in October and the awards will be presented by Charles Kennedy MP.

Isle of Arran No Take Zone - Lamlash Bay

Isle of Arran No Take Zone - Lamlash Bay

A new dawn has broken over the troubled waters around the Island of Arran on Saturday; it brought new hope to the islands community for a better future of their marine heritage and environment.

The Scottish Government has created Scotland’s first ‘No-Take Zone’ in Lamlash Bay on the Isle of Arran. All fishing within the specified area will be banned while a scientific trial will be carried out to investigate the fishery and bio-diversity benefits of leaving the seabed to regenerate naturally without any disturbance.

The passing of the law was the final keystone of the bridge the Community of Arran Seabed Trust (COAST) has spent 13 years building between Islanders, fishermen, SNH, The Marine Directorate, Politicians and the Government.

The Community of Arran Seabed Trust was formed to try and redress the dramatic collapse of marine life around the islands shores and in the Firth of Clyde. Using positive examples from around the world, including The Isle of Man, Lundy Island and New Zealand, they choose the No-Take Zone and natural regeneration. The project’s significance increased when the commercial fishermen of the area added their support to the scheme.

The underwater scientific baseline survey starts next month and with constant monitoring, the results will hopefully inform the management of Scotland’s seas in the future. The scheme is unique in Scotland as it combines all the forces of the local stakeholders involved including conservationists and fishermen.
It is hoped it may be used as a template where a similar situation is involved.

Now that all the talking, arguing, discussing, campaigning, press coverage and celebrating is over the beautiful waters of Lamlash Bay now can return to the sounds of silence.

£43,000 Fine For Illegal Belgian Trawler Neptunus

Posted under conservation & illegal fishing

Belgian beam trawler Neptunus ordered to pay a total of £43,374

Owners and the master of the Belgian beam trawler Neptunus were ordered to pay a total of £43,374 in fines and costs by Lowestoft Magistrates on Monday September 8th after pleading guilty to fishing with blinders in both trawl nets.

Juvenile fish caught using blinders
Juvenile fish caught using blinders

In the case brought by the Marine and Fisheries Agency, magistrates levied fines of £34,000 to the value of the catch, £1,700 for each of the four offences, and confiscated Neptunus’s gear including both beams, shoes, nets and chains.

The bench heard it was the second time Neptunus skipper, Frank Vandewalle, 37, of Blankenberge, Belgium and owners Olympus NV of Zeebrugge had been caught using blinders – netting fitted inside the codend - in their trawl nets which prevents the release of immature fish.

The court was told that Neptunus was boarded at 10 pm on Thursday September 4th by a UK led international fishery inspection team taking part in a Joint Deployment Plan for Cod in the North Sea.

British, Belgian and Dutch fishery inspectors working from the Dutch fishery protection vessel Barend Biesheuvel boarded Neputus which was fishing for sole and plaice in the southern North Sea 20 miles east of Lowestoft.

In court lawyers for the master and owners said the blinders were being used to protect the net from chaffing on rocks during bad weather.

After the case an MFA spokesman said: “The Agency takes offences against the technical regulations very seriously and in particular when they are detrimental to the release of juvenile fish.

“The evidence in this case was overwhelming and in the Agency’s view this was a deliberate and cynical interference with the technical measures designed to protect immature fish.”

“The evidence demonstrated the quantities of juveniles that may have escaped if the illegal device had not been fitted, an argument that was compelling and reflected in the sentence and forfeiture imposed by the court.”

Last August the skipper and owners of Neptunus were ordered to pay a total of £35,800 in fines and costs after pleading guilty to a range of fishing offences – also at Lowestoft Magistrates Court.

On that occasion they were fined £2,000 each for using ‘blinders’ and fined £10,000 for failing to record accurately in the fishing log book the amount of cod they had caught.

MCS Beachwatch 2008 - MCS Takes Action Against Plastic Beach Litter

15th September 2008

The Marine Conservation Society (MCS) annual Beachwatch litter survey and clean-up takes place over the weekend of 20th-21st September 2008. Over 4,000 volunteers are expected to take part at over 360 beaches in the UK’s biggest survey of its kind. The findings of MCS Beachwatch 2008 will be instrumental in the continuing MCS campaign against plastic litter.

Of all the hazardous materials littering our seas today, plastic poses the greatest threat - it causes death and injury to hundreds of thousands of seabirds and other marine animals every year through ingestion (swallowing) and entanglement. Items of particular danger to marine wildlife include plastic bags, drink can yokes and fishing nets.

Over the past 15 years, plastic litter has consistently accounted for well over 50% of all litter found on beaches during MCS Beachwatch surveys, and the United Nations Environment Programme recently estimated that there are 46,000 pieces of plastic litter per square mile of the world’s oceans!

Emma Snowden MCS Litter Projects Officer says, “It’s not too late to take part, and we need the public’s help to survey more beaches to tackle the relentless tide of litter threatening our beaches and wildlife! This is your chance to get involved with the biggest litter clean-up and survey of beaches all around the UK.” Emma continued, “The information collected will help MCS tackle the sources of litter and campaign to reduce the most common items ending up on our beaches and killing wildlife”.

Almost 4,000 volunteers took part during last year’s MCS Beachwatch 2007 weekend, cleaning and surveying over 350 beaches and collecting over 2,700 bags of litter - a clear sign that beach litter is a major issue and is important to the UK public. The survey recorded an average of 2,054 items per kilometre on UK beaches, which equates to over two items for every metre stretch of beach!

MCS Adopt-a-Beach and MCS Beachwatch are supported by The Crown Estate. Fiona Wynne, Coastal Stewardship & Environment Manager at the Crown Estate says, “Taking part in Beachwatch is a great way to show you and your friends care about the marine environment. We would like to see many more volunteers joining in this year to make it an even greater success, so please make sure you contact MCS to get involved”.

MCS Beachwatch 2008 event is supported by a number of sponsors: The Crown Estate, The Co-operative, London Aquarium, and charitable trusts: Esmee Fairbairn Foundation and Rufford Maurice Laing Foundation.

MCS Beachwatch is the flagship event of the Marine Conservation Society’s Adopt-a-Beach project. The results from MCS Beachwatch are published each spring and used by MCS to campaign against the sources of beach litter at local, national and international levels. The data collected by MCS Beachwatch volunteers contributes to a worldwide project, the International Coastal Clean-up, which takes place in over 80 countries worldwide.

To see a list of beaches taking part in Beachwatch 2008 log onto http://www.adoptabeach.org.uk/ and click on the “Beachwatch” 2008 event lists on the home page button. NFSA Minutes Standing Committee Meeting Saturday 6th September 2008

Posted under National federation Of Sea Anglers & national federation of sea anglers - Yorkshire Division & nfsa

NFSA Minutes Standing Committee Meeting Saturday 6th September 2008;–Oxford

Present;-
Richard Ferre [Chair];  Geoff Knight [vice Chair]; Barrie Senior; Stuart McPherson; Jac Bevan; Brian Owen; Alan Brothers; Chris Holloway; John Brooks;
John Rackett; Chris Clark; Alan Gilbert.

Apologies;
John Amery; Tony Williams; Sam Harris; Mike Patton; John Rowlands; Richard Penny; John Barratt; Kevin Tapper; Eric Gerrey. Andrew Wendon.

Minutes from SC meeting 17th. May 2008
Agreed

Matters Arising
Brian Owen – missing apology.
Actions  Paperwork from office, including minutes, now circulated in good time; some delays in waiting for third party contributions.

Finances
John Amery has suggested a rule change regarding divisional assets to read something like “Divisions will be financially independent of the NFSA but in the event of the Division ceasing to function or be disbanded then it is recommended that any monies & other assets should be donated to The NFSA”
This was agreed in principle, but would ask JA to put a more formal set of words together. JA to action.
Cash flow forecast; P&L for year were presented to the board on 19th July.
David Rowe had confirmed that Corporation Tax had been paid & that the accounts had been signed off.
Year to date showing a £11k loss.

RF; - Questioned the viability of NFSA going forward. Revenue dropping; membership down; projection of a reduced level of income at year end. An increase in salaries over projections due to David Rowe & Jac Bevan handover period. JB confirmed that David was now off the payroll. RF continued that income was not paying for expenditure & that we are on a slippery slope.

GK; - Stated that service still not improved

JBe; — Totally rejected this claim, & that improvements had been made via emails; telephone & hard copy.

JBr; - Agreed, that service had improved, & stressed that it was down to everyone to encourage new members.

CH; - Stated that people are still uncertain about Unity, & are not sure how to move forward.

RF;- Agreed that Unity has caused confusion, but stressed that we are spending more than we earn, & will be in danger of not being able to pay bills, & that we are faced with hard decisions; either forget Unity & concentrate on own business, bearing in mind that we only have a few months available financially, cut backs are essential, but still savings would be small in comparison. The only tangible assets are the trophies, insurance value £37k but realisable value, more likely £10k. The question was mooted does the sc want to realise the potential value of the trophies?

JBr;-Asked what we did with the trophies?

CC; - Stressed that they are presented & then taken back.

CH; - Suggested we only keep 3 & release the rest.

GK; - Was concerned, because they are a tradition, but understood that if they had to go, then so be it.

BS; - Noted that most anglers are not interested in trophies.

AB; - Suggested we keep 4, one for display.

CH;- Again stressed that we only need trophies for the competition winner, therefore only 3 are needed, & proposed we keep 3 & lose the rest.

GK; - Seconded the proposal.

ALL AGREED, except JR who abstained.

BS; - Will confirm who donated trophies that are still living and will seek approval for disposal.

RF, GK, JBe; - To finalise choices.

BS; - Suggested we catalogue trophies for posterity. JBe to action

CH; - Questioned the benefits of joining NFSA?

RF; - Replied that all board & SC members should be emphasising benefits such as competitions & conservation, etc. RF; - stated that we really need to know why people do not renew, & that January / February is the danger time.
SM Pointed out that the only tangible benefit was the Third Party Insurance Cover and there was a need to make more of the lobbying that is done on behalf of the members.

RF said that the members also received a journal thrice a year, and a handbook.

CH; - Asked what happens on January 1st, re; - Unity?

RF; - Explained that all assets would transfer to new company& all existing board members would cease. Some work has been done on fee structure & benefits.

JBr;-wanted to know who he would pay his subs too & what would he be a member of?

RF; - Gave an update on Unity, & confirmed that everyone was aware that S&T had pulled out of the merger. That there had been 2 meetings since & things looked difficult after S&T withdrawal. Due diligence completed, including finance & buildings. Legal diligence looking at articles etc. Articles so far, are similar to ours in so far as board structure i.e. minimum 10, maximum 15 directors. It will have an accounts department; membership department, & regional levels. This would be for all anglers, & each board director would lead on his own discipline i.e. RF would be the director for sea angling, with a committee reporting into him. There would still be competitions & conservation. Regionally no change & support would evolve over the years.
There is a broad outline of a business plan, who does what, & this will be confirmed at next chairman’s meeting on 18th September. On Tuesday last [2nd Sept] a Unity meeting in Birmingham agreed a price structure & benefits. [hard copy report given out] taken as read.

JBr; - Asked about costs, as people are worried about money, & offering equipment discount on – line would hurt tackle shops.

RF; - Doubted this would happen.

GK; - Asked total number of members?

RF; - Uncertain, but about 30,000.

BO; - Asked about membership to several federations [bodies]?

RF; - Confirmed that they would only pay for one membership, in the new organisation.

CC; - Asked about life membership.

RF;-Suggested that they would remain as is.

CC; - Asked about insurance.

RF; - Confirmed that better insurance would be available.

CH; - Asked about Jac & staff & office at Buckfastleigh.

RF;-Structure likely to be legal & finance would go to ACA office at Leominster & membership & administration would go to NFA office in Nottingham, because they have the resources.  However there is an argument for a sea angling “presence” in the South West.

JR; - Asked about merging the various databases.

RF; - Confirmed that this is a big problem.  The next meeting [18th Sept] would see a detailed membership plan & structure. Lawyers are working on a merger agreement for all bodies to sign. The NFSA would need a special extraordinary board meeting after that date to agree or not.

JBr; - Stated that the NFSA have committed fully to Unity, & asked about other bodies.

RF; - Stated that all the chairmen are committed, but were having difficulties with their board & members. Also, that it make commercial sense to bring ADB into Unity, further down the development path.

CH; - Queried the official name of the new body.

RF; - Unable to confirm, but either Angling Trust or Anglers Trust, & is confident that Unity is more likely because the chairmen are in full agreement & that a lot of work is being done to move forward.

GK; - Wanted to know what to tell members.

RF; - The structure is almost in place & each board will have to decide. When Sport England withdrew their funding it was likely that The NFSA would fail, we have survived thus far, but the new chairman of the organisation, Mr Stephen Marsh – Smith [current chairman of ACA], has a wealth of experience in developing funding.

JBr; - Wanted to know, after initial start up, how the sc [committee] would be able to influence the new board?

RF;-Confirmed that there would be a voting process.

Chairman’s Report
Taken as read.

RF: - Confirmed the underlying problem with David and asked the sc to decide if DR should be a board appointee.

CC; - Asked if there was any point in making a new board member in light of Unity?

CH; - Replied that we have a procedure & we should follow it.

CC; - Pointed out that DR is not currently a sc member, so could not be automatically appointed.

RF; - Pointed out that the sc should have at least another two members.

JBr;- Asked the current board structure, this was given as Richard Ferre; Geoff Knight; Jac Bevan; Tony Williams; John Amery; Brian Owen; Barrie Senior; Stuart McPherson.

At this stage RF; AB; SM; GK; & JBe (Members appointed by virtue of their office ie. Chairman and General Manager or were Board Appointees) were asked to leave room, for the remaining sc members to appoint new members. We returned shortly afterwards.

CC;- Stated that the sc wished to appoint Chris Holloway & John Brooks to the board, it was felt that David Rowe should stand in his division & then seek board SC appointment if he so required.

GK; - Asked about David’s involvement with ADB.

RF; - Confirmed that at the last Board meeting Stuart McPherson had been appointed.

At this stage JBe passed around a paper the DR had written for the board & sc. This outlined David’s involvement in various bodies and the current position regarding involvement and concluded with wishing the Federation and JB well.

Conservation & Access

Conservation paper taken as read.

RF; - Noted that this was the first meeting in 6 months as June & July meeting was cancelled due to Parliamentary Committee.

JBr;-Emphasised the importance of an anglers logbook.

RF; - Agreed, & said that no one believes angles re; - stocks, because of lack of evidence.

CH; - Stated that the Wessex division is about to start a survey regarding this subject.

RF; - Noted the additional information would be useful, such as how much people spend.

JR; - Reminded people of the imminent rise in diesel.

RF; - Asked about anglers codes of conduct, & emphasised the importance of such things, also suggested a pyramid structure seems most easily defined.

SC gave general agreement.

JBr; - Suggested talking to the ADB.

CC;-Said that there is some already in existence.

RF; - Agreed to distribute a list of what exists & what needs doing.

CH; - Thought it was difficult getting information, & that the RNLI have information on various disciplines.

RF; - Stated that the RSA strategy group, buried in DEFRA, & still waiting consolatory report.

SM;- Stated that there is an illegal draft response on several websites, but not in public domain for a further 2 weeks.

ASFC response paper presented, taken as read.

SM outlined the points that effect the RSA sector and some of the threats that could result and said that he had discussed this with the Chairman earlier in the week. SM was recommending a letter to the Minister.

RF was of the opinion that this would have no effect and that we should write to the ASFC and ask to meet with them.

SM pointed out that this had been tried in the past without success.

JBr; - Objected to the word “EXPLOIT”

CH; - Suggested that the conservation group should deal with conservation issues.

SM Pointed out that it had not been discussed at the C&G meeting earlier in the week even although several members had been made aware of its existence.

The meeting agreed that it should be a C&G issue.

There was a general disagreement about the number of sea anglers on AFSC committees.

RF; — Suggested that SM write to the SFC to invite us up for participation.

TW had submitted a paper outlining the work of the EAA and the NFSA involvement.

JBe; - Asked about the viability of value of EAA membership, in light of our financial situation.

RF; - Suggested that we do not pay the second half membership fee. It was noted that Tony Williams has done a fantastic job on our behalf, but unfortunately economics are not favourable. RF to talk to TW.

CC; - Noted that the next Cips meeting is in York, no date given.

Increasing RRS for Bass to 45cm

The proposal floated at the last meeting that the Federation should increase the MLS of Bass to 45cm in line with our recommendation to DEFRA was discussed.

JBr; - Declared that the non member angler takes no notice. But as members of NFSA we should all follow this rule. Most use NFSA size.

All present voted in favour of 45cm Bass. It was agreed to change our MLS as from Ist.January 2009. [in absence of government initiative]. AB was asked to prepare a press statement on this.

National Teams

Paper presented, taken as read.

CC;-Stated that the 2009 press release for applications was going out next week, & that teams would still go out under NFSA banner.

GK;- Declared that a small group deals with NFSA festivals, but it is not working very well, now that they are 2 people short, with DR & Paul Lawson leaving. Invited anyone interested in the vacancies to contact him. It was also noted that it has been agreed with Wessex about the 2008 competition. 2009 competition looks likely in Wessex. Also details of boat competition, from Nigel Blythe were read out. GK to send to office for inclusion on web site.

Guernsey & BRFC, as per DR’s paper, circulated.

RF; - Asked JBe about handbook.

JBe: - Confirmed that it will be issued shortly, & one reason for delay was getting money in from advertising.

ADB

SM;- refreshed members memories of the paper outlining Sport England’s Policy which had been circulated earlier in the year and stated that he had attended a meeting earlier in the week where the ADB were formulating their bid for funding for the period 2008 / 2013. He said there was an identical presentation on Tuesday 9th Sept at Nottingham and there was a request for a Sea Angling presence.

CH; - Questioned the viability & benefits of ADB.

SM;- said that having considered the Whole Sport Plan 2008 / 2013 he was of the opinion that the proposed staffing levels were ambitious but from his short involvement in the Yorkshire and Humber Region there was potential. He was optimistic that the strategy for engaging youngsters was necessary and would preserve the heritage of angling.

Press Report

AB; - Stated that he had no report, because things are very quiet. The next thing is the journal, & it will now include a piece about 45cm Bass.

Reports from Division

Wessex division report, taken as read. Also Wessex will have small boat & shore competition in 2009.

GK; - Looking to divisions to run National competitions in 2009.

SM; - Quoted from a note from the Hon Sec of the North East Division open boat competition next week, details on web site; and a Sea Angling show organised for 25/26 October at the Nissan Car Centre Sunderland is going well, with several celebrities confirmed to attend. Also SM & JA will attend.

SM; - Yorkshire have arranged a 10% for NFSA members in local tackle shop. Jac to put on web site, front page, already, on forum .

JBe; - Read for the Wyvern, that they hosted its annual open junior competition at Teignmouth. 49 juniors fishing & as well as the main prize all went home with a goodie bag.  The boat jumble in Newton Abbot attracted a lot of people but alas not many to our stand, suggests a slide show or attraction to grab peoples attention. The 13/14 September will see the open small boat competition at Salcombe. Prizes include a small outboard engine & a GPS fish finder, prizes total over £2500.

Club Applications

None.

AOB

SM;-    Advised the Committee that there was an increasing trend for Local Authorities, who control most of the shoreline, to require the organisers of events, such as shore angling competitions, on the beach to complete risk assessments and provide proof of third party liability insurance. The latter usually being cover for £5 million and in some cases more. He thought that many Affiliated Clubs and the wider RSA sector were not aware of this and we should bring it to their notice. Agreed that it would be publicised in the next edition of the Journal. Action AB

JBe; - Reported that there had been a request to hold at least one sc meeting up North from the North East Division. The Chairman stated that he thought it was a worthwhile suggestion and the members agreed. It would be finalized once the Unity outcome was decided.

CC; - Reported that NFSA selectors need to be chosen. It was the existing members that were reselected, Jack Rees, Chris Clark, and Geoff Knight. GK & CH confirmed they would continue. All present voted in favour. Alan Gilbert was selected as junior advisor.

Ch; - Questioned how the sc is selected if Unity goes ahead, & suggested that they may return to the original format.

RF;- Suggested that the new body may bring new rules which will have to be followed.

GK; - Asked for clarity on what has been decided re Unity & sub groups.

RF; - Confirmed that the sea anglers will still have it’s sub group & that there will be only one organization, one central financial pot etc, so each discipline will have to apply for any monies. Also confirmation was given that a board & sc meeting will be needed for final decision about Unity, either the 18th or 25th October, or 1st.November, RF will confirm. Also all available information will be circulated beforehand.

Next Meeting formal meeting confirmed for December 6th. @ Buckfastleigh.

Latest Advice On Fish Sustainability

Latest Advice On Fish Sustainability Published

4th september 2008

MCS calls on retailers to improve labelling to enable real consumer choice

The Marine Conservation Society (MCS) today publishes its latest advice to consumers on fish sustainability, including those it recommends to “eat”, and those to “avoid”. The website fishonline (www.fishonline.org) gives advice for almost every variety of fish to be found on sale in the UK. A handy “MCS Pocket Good Fish Guide” is also available. Using this information, consumers can make a sustainable seafood choice at fish counters, restaurants and other outlets. However, MCS is concerned that inadequate labelling on many seafood products will still lead to some confusion amongst shoppers.Sustainability of food supply is of huge public concern presently, but labelling of products at many retail points is simply not sufficient to give consumers an informed choice for fish and other seafood. While present EU legislation demands that retailers display various details on seafood being sold, MCS believes that labelling of processed products and at fresh fish counters, takeaways and restaurants remains poor and, in many cases, non-existent.

Marine Conservation Society Fisheries Officer Sam Wilding says, “Labelling of seafood sold in the UK is lacking detail, and as such is not fit for purpose. This is leading to confusion amongst consumers who really want to make the best sustainable seafood choice. It is vital that consumers are given better information to act upon if we are to reduce the tragedy of overfishing. Whilst we wait for fish sellers to help consumers make the right sustainable seafood choice, we advise that if consumers are not confident that their fish is sustainably sourced they should question their retailer closely for more information”.

Cod is an example of why such labelling is important. With cod stocks at various levels of abundance in different regions, there are better and worse choices to make in terms of buying sustainably. Cod from the Northeast Arctic would be a better choice than cod from the North Sea for example. However without that information available on labels consumers are left confused and frustrated. MCS recommends that when faced with this situation, consumers should try different species that are considered a good sustainable choice. Great sustainable alternatives to cod include pouting (or bib), red or grey gurnard, and pollack.

Tom Aikens, Michelin starred chef and owner of Tom’s Kitchen and Tom’s Place said, “We have been sourcing sustainable seafood for three years and aim to offer our customers alternatives to overfished species. We now serve gurnard and pollack as alternatives to cod and they have proved popular with our patrons. Both these species are excellent alternatives to cod and can be prepared in the same way.”

The Fishonline website provides information on over 150 species of seafood available to the UK consumer. Seafood given a rating of 1 is considered the “most sustainable” by MCS, as they are sourced from well managed, sustainable stocks using environment-friendly fishing or farming methods. Seafood given a rating of 5 is deemed “unsustainable”, from poorly managed or depleted stocks, or using methods of fishing or farming that harm the marine ecosystem.

The Fishonline website www.fishonline.org - provides a simple and advanced search facility, and information on the state of different stocks, impacts of the fishery on non-target species and the marine environment, the impacts of various fishing methods and lists of fish to eat and to avoid plus much more. The lists of “fish to eat” and “fish to avoid” are summarised in the MCS Pocket Good Fish Guide, which can be used as a quick reference whilst doing the weekly shop, at the take-away, or dining out. The Pocket Good Fish Guide is available FREE from MCS (upon receipt of SAE) - call 01989 566017, e-mail info@mcsuk.org or download a copy from the www.fishonline.org website.

Kayak Fishing For Sea Trout At Runswick

Forum member Bassy Ken had a pleasant surprise this week when he reeled in his storm thunderstick whilst plugging for bass. A 4 pound sea trout snaffled his lure and an amazing fight ensued with the trout jumping clear out the water on 2 occasions. All the info can be found at the 2 links below.

Blue Shark Bites Angler

Posted under shark fishing

Blue Shark Bites Angler

AN angler was rescued by helicopter and flown to hospital after a shark bit back when he was fishing near Lundy island on Saturday.

Stephen Perkins, 52, from South Glamorgan, was boat fishing west off Lundy when he hooked a shark.

But it was his catch - believed to be a blue shark - that came off best when it bit into his forearm.

Mr Perkins, who was bleeding heavily, was rescued by an RAF Chivenor helicopter and initially flown to North Devon District Hospital. He was later transferred to the Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital, where he underwent surgery to repair crush and rip damage. He was discharged today Monday.
