16 Pound Shore Cod For Sea Otter 2 Skipper Paul

Posted under cod fishing

Cod Fishing On Whitby West Pier

So what does the north east hardest working charter skipper do on his day off ? No doubt in the same situation most of you would spend some time with the wife or head off down the local for a few pints and a laugh with the lads. Anyone who knows the sea otter 2 Whitby charter skipper will know instantly what Paul does on his day of - He goes fishing.

On Monday 22nd November Paul headed onto one of his favourite fishing marks - The west pier at Whitby. Armed with a bucket of crab, mussel and worms he set about catching himself some cod. With only 2 hours spare before he was needed to help out behind the bar in his own pub - The Ship Inn at Whitby Paul had one of the best days shore fishing he has had in over 10 years. In those 2 hours Paul had 4 good cod for over 30 pounds - The biggest being a lunker which tipped the scales down at Whitby Angling Supplies at exactly 16 pounds.

This is Paul’s Story -

Well glen after a few beers in my local the ship ( sorry my pub) just nicely chilling out well after my couple of hours fishing today i had to just sit and chill out got my best fish for well over 10years. I decided after yesterdays poor session I fancied a couple of hours this afternoon the wind had dropped the sea was just starting to drop, it looked blob on for a fish allmost anywhere so I went where I thought I might have clicked a lunker yesterday, The West Pier at Whitby. I have had over the years some unbelievable bags of fish off that peir but only in the right conditions, today it looked cracking, a lovely big lazy roll so i popped down for a couple of hours. There was a few mops coming in here and there but i put a big bait out purposely to fish for a better fish and sure enough I was lucky and hooked into what I thought was a decent codling of 8 or 9 lb, it wasn’t untill i got it near the pier i realized it was much better fish, then it surfaced, and I knew it was well into double figures looking at the fish I knew it couldnt be lifted so thought about the best options to get this fish ashore. I allways use a 50-60lb shock leader and hook trace for lifting but anything over 10lb is dodgy so the fun began. I was fishing of the end of the west pier there was another 2 guys on the peir one was fishing next to me and another near the corner, I told the guy who was fishing next to me this fish had to be beached other wise i would of had no chance with it, so as i thought the harbour looked the best choice try and get the fish all the way to the bandstand there is some steps there which would be an ideal landing place. It looked one hell of a task but after half of hour of guiding the fish to all sorts of obstructions we finally managed to get the fish to the steps next to the bandstand but in the final moments of landing the fish it became tangled on the handrails adjacent to the steps, but the lord must have been looking down on us and i got it free. A fine fish of 16lb exactly. It was nice to see and i think there is more of those fellows to come this winter. We had loads of cod 13–15lb in the boat this backend so there might be an odd fish nearing the 20lb mark around in the new year when they fill up with spawn. Keep believeing boys.

Paul.

UK Bass Record Broken

Posted under sea fishing records & bass fishing

Sandown Pier Isle Of Wight - British Shore Caught Bass Record Is Smashed

The long-standing British shore caught bass record has been smashed with a 19lb 11oz 12dr cracker, which was taken from Sandown Pier on the Isle of Wight, last night (Saturday).
The fish was taken by local angler Steve Caves, who was fishing a whole squid bait.
The fish, which is now at Scotties tackle shop in Sandown, measured 36 inches long and beats the long standing shore caught record of 19lb, a fish caught way back in 1988 from Dover breakwater.
The fish was weighed twice on the pier at 19lb 12oz and then in the tackle shop at 19lb 11oz 12dr.

Promoting and protecting the interests of sea anglers nationwide

Date: November 26 2007

Minister abandoned fisheries science, says MP

The government has “flown in the face” of its own fisheries advisers, Cefas
(the Centre for Environment, Fisheries and Aquaculture Science), in refusing
to increase the minimum landing size of bass.

The decision looked after the short-term interests of the inshore commercial
fishing fleet rather than the long-term interests of the species and the
environment, according to Martin Salter, the government’s own parliamentary
spokesman on angling.

He told the House of Commons (on November 22) that just two years ago Cefas
had recommended the size should be increased.

“It is incumbent on us to take the long-term view. The science shows that,
although increasing the minimum landing size for bass would mean a
short-term
depletion in the fish available to be … caught by the commercial sector,
there
would be a long-term increase.”

Thanking him for expressing the anger and dismay of sea anglers at the
decision, Richard Ferré, the chairman, of the NFSA said in a letter: “We are
not
naïve enough to expect an immediate U-turn but hopefully it will encourage
the
minister to take some other rapid actions to rebuild confidence.”

Mr. Salter said increasing the landing size to 45cm would double the weight
of sea bass which was a valuable recreational fishing species. “Just as
people
spend a lot of money to catch quality salmon - far more than salmon would
ever
fetch on a fishmonger’s slab - people will spend a lot of money to enjoy
quality recreational bass fishing.”

The optimum spawning size for female bass was 42cm. It was simple
conservation to give every species the opportunity to breed once to promote
sustainable
fishing.

Mr. Salter said he had tried to make a case for a sea angling licence but he
absolutely agreed with the National Federation of Sea Anglers that this
could
only happen if there was a significant improvement in the sport available to
sea anglers.

The minister’s decision had “driven a coach and horses” through the
government’s new strategy for recreational fishing and through any attempt
to make a case for a licence.

Yorkshire Division

MINUTES OF MEETING 19TH NOVEMBER 2007

SCARBOROUGH ANGLERS SOCIAL CLUB

ATTENDANCE:

Chairman: John Amery, Secretary: Gwyn Davies

Committee Members: Stuart McPherson, Glen Kilpatrick

Neil Horsley, Ken Gaches, David Lowe: Scarborough Boat Anglers

John Huntley, Sam Huntley: Bridlington

John Whitton: Whitby S A and member NESFC

There were insufficient members present to complete a quorum, but it was decided to proceed as there were no issues to be discussed which would require voting on.
APOLOGIES:

Treasurer, Jean Amery
MINUTES of the 20TH August meeting.

These had been circulated and were proposed S.McPherson, seconded K Gaches as being a true record.
MATTERS ARISING:
Bradford Angling Club.
Gwyn Davies stated that he had been in contact Brian Clarkson keeping him up to date with minutes of the division, Brian stated that the Bradford club were holding there annual general meeting on the 20th November when the question of re-joining NFSA would be discussed and he would keep us informed.
GUERNSEY QUALIFIERS
Unfortunately Nev Charlesworth, who has been running these matches in the Division, was not in attendance to discuss future events, with the qualifiers coming around again discussions need to take place as soon as possible. Gwyn Davies suggested that because of the different types of fishing in the division’s area with more mixed ground to the northern end of the coastline compared to the clean beaches of Holderness/Humberside/ North Lincolnshire coastline then there might be scope for 2 matches or the original match run in a series of heats encompassing the whole coastline of the Division.

J A to discuss with David Rowe action JA.

CHAIRMANS REPORT
The chairman reported that the Division was starting to become active, and we would be hearing from Gwyn and Stuart regarding contact made with various bodies. He stated that we now need to pick up a lot of loose ends and show a united higher profile presence.

TREASURES REPORT:
Jean Amery sent a report stating that Dave Shay had closed the old account and had forwarded a cheque for £565.42 to the division. Only expense since last meeting was a donation of £ 20 to the Douglas Heart Foundation as requested by the family of Gerard Twigger, NFSA Finance Director who sadly passed away in early October.

Gerard had attended the inaugural explorationary meeting which led to the setting up of the new Division.

Funds stand at £545.42

Because of the intracies of setting up a new account, and because Jean and John were only in office till mid 2008 it was agreed to let Jean hold the money for the present and pass it on when new treasurer is elected.

CORRESPONDENCE:
Letter to NESFC. GD read a letter he had sent to NESFC introducing ourselves and asking for representation for recreational sea anglers. Simon Prince (deputy chief fisheries officer) replied that the NESFC are committed to the stakeholders within the inshore fisheries management process and would like to reconvene at least one annual consultation meeting with the RSA community, asking us to suggest a venue/date/time.

Further to this they are hoping to establish a Fishing Industry Working Group in the near future comprising of 10-12 members of which there will be a dedicated RSA member and will be in contact regarding this group.

Regarding the collection of bait he forwarded some guidance notes regarding the byelaw on Lobster, edible crab and velvet crab it was also stated that the green shore crab is not covered by this byelaw and collection of this species is unrestricted.

He also stated that the bass bag limit byelaw had been put on hold by the NESFC.

Also enclosed was a copy of their official response regarding the dredging off the mouth of the Humber estuary

At this stage John Whitton, Whitby CSA was introduced, as he is a member of NESFC and was able to discuss the attitudes of the committee.

He was asked about a shellfish byelaw, which puts restrictions on capture of Edible, and Velvet swimming crabs. John stated that the byelaw was intended to control illegal potting etc and it was not intended to affect hand collection from the shore, although a permit is required to collect Lobster, Edible Crab, Velvet Swimming Crab and Whelks, these permits allow a daily catch limit of 2 Lobsters, up to maximum combined total of 10 Crab (Edible or Velvets) and 30 Whelks. John Huntley spoke out against the byelaw and general discussion took place so that everyone became better informed of the situation.

Pair trawling for Bass off Flamborough was discussed and the meeting asked if legality could be clarified. John Whitton expressed his concerns on this type of fishing.

It was agreed that GD attempt to set up a meeting. Action GD

Gwyn Davies reported that he had been unhappy at the way the NFSA had released news on the agreed membership fees and had written to Richard Ferre. He had received a reply but this had not answered all his comments. He was chasing further response and would report to the next meeting. A copy of his concerns was given to Stuart McPherson so it can be brought up at the Standing committee meeting. Agreed that JA/SMcP would raise the matter, that members were of the opinion that they had not been given the full facts regarding Sports England funding both in the past and in respect of NFSA involvement in the Angling Development Board at the SC on the 24th. Action JA/SMcP
Gwyn had responded to a request from Nigel Proctor to complete a consultation document regarding a proposed wind farm off Hull on how the development will affect the RSA and charter boats.

Access Issue, South Bank of Humber

An email had been received from NFSA member Kevin Riley regarding a barrier being elected on the Humber wall, blocking access behind the millennium works; he also mentioned that all of the local authorities across the country are supposed to have set up Local Access forums to agree policy on local access issues. John Amery explained the he dealt with access complaints nationally for the NFSA and if all the details could be forwarded he could look into the matter a copy of the email was given to JA.
Kevin also stated that the local access forums are looking at the redesignation of the upper tidal limit of the Humber from its current location at the confluence of the Trent, Ouse and Humber to the Humber Bridge, this would mean that anglers fishing this stretch would need an EA licence to fish west of the bridge which would remove the right of access to the inter tidal zone of the river. It was also suggested that all local authorities should be contacted to see what there policies were regarding Local Access forums. Action GD

Defra

Gwyn said that he had been in contact with Anthony Hines of Defra regarding the Marine bill and the RSA Strategy also asking if the division could become a stakeholder which he stated we could he also forward the RSA Strategy V5
Membership Price increase
E-mail from Vicky White giving details of new membership fees.

Humber Dredging.

Gwyn had been contacted by head office regarding issue with dredging off the Humber estuary also being put into contact with John Coppock who was doing the research, John Coppock was looking for information regarding what type of fishing that goes on in the area of the dredging, Gwyn stated that he had pointed John in the direction of the Humber Cruising Association, NESFC and the charter angling boats of Grimsby as they would be better to give the info he wanted

British Rod Caught Fish Committee had circulated details of new record fish. GD had passed this onto all members who had e-mail addresses.

NORTH EAST SEA FISHERIES COMMITTEE
It was hoped that Simon Prince (deputy chief fisheries officer) would be available at the meeting but due to problems beyond his control he would not be available, John Whitton (member of the North Eastern Sea Fishing Committee) answered most of the questions posed and stated that he would be happy to bring up any issues that we wanted to forward to him. The meeting expressed their thanks.

COMPETITIONS
The trophies that the division holds were put on display and it was agreed that they needed to be used. Because of the lack of people present it was decided to put back to the next meeting discussion on competitions, but there was general agreement that we should hold at least an annual shore and an annual boat championship. It was decided that we should attempt to get Nev Charlesworth to the next meeting.

Also the possibility of holding workshops for the junior anglers as we have 3 or 4 qualified coaches in the division, Gwyn to contact Phil Arnott regarding this

STANDING COMMITTEE
Stuart McPherson reported that he would be attending his first meeting on 24th Nov. He had received the papers and where possible had circulated to divisional members for comment in case they want anything bringing up. He also stated that he only had about 1/3 of the division’s members on e-mail, so if anyone knows other members who have e-mail can they tell them to contact Stuart by email on smyorksnfsa07@yahoo.com

On receiving the minutes of the last meeting of the standing committee Gwyn picked upon certain articles in these minutes these were the Agenda items on Sport England, Divisional Grants and insurance which he had little or no info on, He had contacted David Rowe regarding them explaining his concerns regarding the release of information. David agreed that all divisions/members need to have better communication of information, also stating if GD would put his concerns on paper he would bring them up at the Standing committee meeting.

ENGLISH NATURE
Members had heard that English Nature is to propose a No Take Zone at Flamborough. Details were a little unclear but the meeting discussed the impact this would have on angling, especially the Bridlington Charter fleet, and the shore anglers who come from all over the division to fish this venue. It was agreed that we needed to be in contact with English Nature at all stages otherwise recreational sea anglers could suffer greatly. Action GD
MEMBERSHIP
The chairman pointed out the need to increase membership, as we need to be speaking on their behalf. John Whitton said he thought Whitby Charter Skippers might join as a group.

DATE OF NEXT MEETING TO BE ARRANGED NEXT WEEK action GD
There being no other business the meeting closed at 9.50pm

National Federation Of Sea Anglers - Cod Discards Press Release

Posted under bag limits & conservation & cod fishing & nfsa & National federation Of Sea Anglers

Minister’s “heartbreak” over cod - and over bass, too

The fisheries minister (Jonathan Shaw) today described on BBC Breakfast as “heartbreaking” that EU rules were forcing fishermen catching cod in the North Sea to throw them back dead.

Richard Ferré, chairman of the National Federation of Sea Anglers, said today that a month ago Mr. Shaw himself in a scarcely publicised move, committed an equally heartbreaking act telling fishermen that they were free to go on slaughtering in the sea and then selling, huge numbers of small “plate size” immature bass.

“It is ironic that at the first sign that cod stocks may be recovering the first thing the minister wants to do is to take more fish out of the sea,” he said.

“The same philosophy no doubt guided his decision to allow the bass slaughter to continue. In the longer term such actions threaten fish stocks and the livelihoods of commercial fishermen and the 19,000 people employed in the sea angling industry.”

The bass fishermen are now allowed to kill are only 36cm (14 inches) long and not big enough to spawn.

“He completely reversed a decision by his predecessor (Ben Bradshaw) who after months of deliberation had agreed to protect baby bass from over fishing and raise the landing size to 40cm (nearly 16 inches), ” said Mr. Ferré. “It was part of a plan to raise the size to 45cm (nearly 18 inches) by 2010 by which time the fish caught would all have spawned.”

It was to have been part of a programme to regenerate bass stocks, allowing them to grow much bigger and develop valuable fisheries for both commercial fishermen and sea anglers. The recreational sea angling industry is worth £1 billion a year and there are a million sea anglers.

But Mr. Shaw said he could not back the measure because the brunt would have been borne by the inshore fishing fleet ‘”given its current pressures and the present healthy state of the stock.”

His short sighted action has been condemned by the government’s own parliamentary spokesman on angling (Martin Salter MP) who said he had seen nothing to suggest, as the minister did, that raising the size limit would have a “significant impact” on commercial fishermen. Mr. Salter added that the survival of any species was dependent on its ability to breed at least once.

Marine Bill To Go To Parliament - Marine Conservation Society Still Unhappy

Posted under bag limits & marine bill & conservation & marine conservation

Draft Marine Bill Is Just Another Consultation

The Marine Conservation Society (MCS) is extremely disappointed that the Queen’s Speech only included a commitment to produce a draft Marine Bill, not a full Marine Bill.

Melissa Moore, MCS Senior Policy Officer said “A draft Marine Bill will amount to little more than another consultation, and we have already had two. The Government needs to speed up this process if it is to meet its manifesto commitment for a Marine Act before the next election.”

MCS, RSPB, WWF and The Wildlife Trusts have been campaigning for many years for comprehensive new legislation to ensure effective protection of our marine environment.

Mrs Moore added “A Marine Bill is urgently needed to deliver a marine planning system that will enable sustainable development of industries such as marine renewables and the designation of Marine Protected Areas.”

At present, without a forward looking planning system, there is increasing conflict between interests such as shipping, renewables and conservation, but a planning system would prevent this by identifying the most sensible locations for all interests. The Marine Bill would also enable the designation of much needed Marine Protected Areas – at present less 0.001 per cent of our seabed is fully protected.

Sea Angling License To Go Before Parliament Early In 2008

Posted under National federation Of Sea Anglers & Sea Angling News

Anglers say licences a poor catch

A controversial scheme to licence sea angling in the draft Marine Bill to be published around Easter 2008, could become bureaucratic, covering only its own costs and not bring any benefits to sea anglers.

Although the bill was not specifically mentioned in the Queen’s speech to parliament today (Tuesday), the government confirmed that it was still committed to bringing it before parliament during the next parliament.

Angling organisations predict only a quarter of the country’s one million sea anglers would pay up for licences. That would generate up to £3.5 million a year and just about cover the cost of administration and enforcement, leaving no funds to develop the sport.

In a summary of public responses to the proposed licences, the environment department (Defra) says the main reasons behind the opposition were that the impact of recreational sea angling was considered much less significant than commercial fishing. Licensing was not needed to control it and other recreational users of the sea were not licensed.

“The public responses to this licensing proposal reflected much that we have urged on Defra for the last two years,” said Richard Ferré, chairman of the National Federation of Sea Anglers.

“Of 271 comments on ideas for modernising sea fisheries’ management, 55 were from recreational sea angling,” he said. “That shows the depth of feeling against arbitrary licensing and we will continue our determined opposition.”

Defra said a number of respondents considered that occasional sea anglers would be put off by the need for a licence and that might have an adverse effect on the angling boat charter business.

Mr. Ferré said this would particularly affect those on holiday with children

Anglers and others who conditionally supported or were neutral towards licences, said fishstocks would have to be significantly improved to make them acceptable. Any revenue must be returned to the angling sector otherwise they would be seen as an additional tax.

Respondents who supported licences saw it as a means for sea anglers to influence government fisheries policy and increase financial support for sea angling.

Defra’s summary said many respondents supported the ability to apply set bag limits on the number of fish which can be retained under certain conditions, such as essential conservation, but applied proportionately to all fishing. Recreational sea anglers said imposing bag limits on them to reserve fish stocks for others was unacceptable.

Yorkshire Coast Kayak Fishing For Bass

Nine Pound Bass For Scarborough Kayak Angler

This is an extract from a topic in our fishing forum. It is a post by forum member NewDave and documents a rather special day for this Yorkshire coast bass angler. The full topic can be read at this link :

http://www.whitbyseaanglers.co.uk/forum/north-east-coast-fishing/just-caught-my-fish-of-a-lifetime/0/

For those of you that don’t know me, i bought a kayak in August & was lucky enough to have quint, the Areas number 1 yak angler & Bass miester take me under his wing and fast track me through the learn to fish process, although as the worm will tell you i still can’t cast properly & have got the wrong type of oil in my reel Tongue. but i really did not expect to knocking my teacher of his pedestal in the hall of Fame. Wink Sorry Mate Grin
weighed at the anglers club, 8lb 12 oz 71cm long & 20cm deep at belly

having read the Steve l’Anson article in the sea angler magazine, “the best day of his life” got to say i know how is son felt, i am still floating 3 ft off the ground. obviously you are a 6 year old all your life when it comes to catching fish.

So i was over working in the usa all last week & spent most of the spare time in the Basspro shop buying plugs & stuff, apart from the heap that Ramrod took off my hands, i now have more artificial lures than GB tackle Cool, along with having read the ladle book “hooked on Bass” from cover to cover twice. So when i got up this morning & the sun was shining all i could think of was taking them out & trying them. Unfortunately i am billy no-mates at the moment with quint expanding the gene pool in vietnam , and the Worm having drydocked his yak for the winter in order to concentrate all is efforts on breaking the shore caught whiting record Kiss

So with the bit of northerly swell i was a bit stuck for a venue to launch my yak, so headed to brid bay expecting to try out my new collection & maybe hook a schoolie or two if lucky.

After about 3 hours of trying every trick in my new tackle bag, i was getting used to the idea that not much was going to happen & started paddling to shore for a spot of lunch. for some reason i stopped about 30m from the beach in 5ft water & decided to have a few more chucks with old faithful “maria”. chucked it towards the beach landing no more than 10m out, as soon as the bail arm went down, the water exploded. I could not believe what was happening, luckily it made its first run towards me into some deeper water & i managed to keep my cool and keep a tight line, it certainly did not like the site of the kayak and headed straight down, but next time round i got a net under it and hauled it aboard. I was so bloody excited i just paddled ashore & sat on the beach for 10 minutes. (fishings boring Ian Roll Eyes)
I tried to fish on but i just could not calm down, and headed home. got to say it must be hard for you match angler, when you do get a good fish to just concentrate on baiting up & trying to get some more.

So it maybe was not the best day of my life, but it was bloody good, thanks Ian Grin Grin Grin
