Fishing Blea Wyke At Ravenscar

Posted under Sea Angling News

Rock Fishing At Ravenscar

There was a very interesting topic in the Whitby Fishing Forum recently when to of the forum members visited one of Yorkshire’s top cod marks at Blea Wyke near Ravenscar. Quint and Jellyworm as they are known of the forum visited Blea Wyke on 28th August and enjoyed some good fishing.

Once down the place looked very promising and thanks to some secret info we had a few spots to try out.
First cast for us both resulted in a nice red fish for me and a small mop for Iain.
I lost the next one in the kelp (inexperience showing through)

We then moved to another spot again with stacks of deep water to cast into , the lead seems to take forever to hit bottom.

A couple more fish to Iain and bites to me but no fish

Fishing Trips From Wearside

Boy Daniel trip report 25/8/07

We sailed at 07:00 with 10 aboard it was a fine sunny morning with a fresh westerly breeze, the lads wanted to stop for mackerel for bait so we stopped about a mile off the harbour they were a bit slow coming aboard at first but after 30 mins we had a couple of boxes, it was then off to try a few wrecks with the 1st drift producing 3 8 pound codling we tried a few more with each producing fish cod and pollock up to 10 pounds but no ling, the wind freshened up making the boat drift a bit too fast 1.3-1.5 knots so we steamed in to try the hard ground we had good sport and decent fish (some lost) till about 3 pm then it went very quiet we called it a day at 5pm with only a couple of whiting a few blegs and the ubiquitous mackerel caught between 3-5 pm we were tied up for 6 and all went home happy.

Line Colour And Its Effects On Fishing

Posted under Sea Angling News

Are Fish Effected By Different Coloured Fishing Lines

Local angler Phil Arnott has reproduced one of his articles on line colour from a few years ago. The article which was originally printed in the angling times can be found in the Whitby fishing forum in a topic all about the effects of different line colours on our fishing.

Phil Says

A subject that has cropped up form time to time in the angling media is that of line colour and what effect it may have on catches. It appears from what I have read that no one has any firm opinion on the subject. This is most likely because there is little evidence as to what effect line colour has on fish. As with most things in angling to find a definitive answer is not easy as much experimentation is needed and even when this is carried out the results may not be conclusive. However, in the case of line colour some experiments have actually been carried out already, not in the country though but in the States.

Portuguese Man of War

Posted under Sea Angling News

Portuguese Man Of War Off The South West Coast

With global warming on the increase and our seas getting warmer on an annual basis is it long before we see some of the warm water jelly fish off the north east coast ? With a Portuguese man of war recently been found off the south west coast how long is it before they turn up here ?

Press release from mcsuk

Today the Marine Conservation Society (MCS) and the Cornwall Wildlife Trust (CWT) are warning beach goers in the South West to be on the look out for potentially dangerous, jellyfish-like Portuguese Man-of-War, after one was found washed up on Porthmeor beach at St Ives on Monday.

A concerned member of the CWT Marine Strandings Volunteer Network found the animal washed up on the beach on Monday morning and immediately reported his finding, and then called MCS to report the animal to the MCS Jellyfish Survey. Later a biologist from the University of Exeter’s Cornwall Campus collected the animal from Porthmeor and confirmed its identity.

“The MCS national jellyfish survey has received about 5,000 UK jellyfish records since 2003, but this is only our sixth record of a Portuguese Man-of-War, so they seem to be relatively rare in our waters,” said Peter Richardson, Species Policy Officer, “The onshore winds over the weekend will have blown it in from the ocean. It is quite possible that more may wash up on South West beaches as the winds persist.”

The distinctive Portuguese Man-of-War is not in fact a jellyfish, but a floating colony of closely related animals called hydrozoans (small and plant-shaped, with a stalk and tentacles) that normally live at the surface of the open ocean. The colony floats from the bottom of an air-filled, pink, blue or purple float, which somewhat resembles an inflated condom, and has many long thin tentacles hanging below that it uses to catch fish and which inflict a very powerful sting. Human contact with the tentacles usually results in agonising stings that leave painful lesions and ulcerations. However, there are a few cases on record from different parts of the world where Portuguese Man-of-War stings have resulted in fatalities. Sting victims can suffer intense fever and anaphylactic shock, which can put swimmers and children in particular at risk.

“There is no need to panic about the arrival of this one animal, but beach users, especially those with families, really should be aware that these animals can present a serious threat and should report any sightings of them to the Cornwall Wildlife Trust Marine Strandings Network hotline on 0845 201 2626”, said Joana Doyle, CWT Marine Conservation Officer, “The CWT Standings Network has been alerted to this finding and our volunteers will be looking out for Portuguese Man-of-War on Cornish beaches over the next few days”.

Recommended treatment for Man-of-War stings includes immediate removal of the tentacles and immersion of the affected areas in warm fresh water at 45oC for 20 mins. Alternative recommendations include the application of an ice pack to the stings, but under no circumstance should vinegar be used on stings from this animal as this can make them worse. Anyone who is worried about a Portuguese Man-of-War sting should consult a doctor as soon as possible.

This unusual Portuguese Man-of-War record will be included by MCS in the analysis of the national jellyfish survey database later this year, carried out in collaboration with the University of Exeter’s Centre for Ecology & Conservation. Anyone can take part in the MCS national jellyfish survey by downloading the full-colour MCS jellyfish photo-ID guide from www.mcsuk.org where jellyfish encounters can also be reported online. Alternatively, paper copies of the ID guide and recording forms are available on request from MCS on 01989 566017 or info@mcsuk.org. Anyone wishing to report a marine animal stranding on Cornish beaches should call the CWT 24hr Marine Strandings Network hotline on 0845 201 2626. Ends

No Great White Sharks In Cornwall

Posted under Sea Angling News

Great White Shark

Research says there are no great white sharks in cornwall

Surveys around Cornwall’s coast this weekend revealed the presence of large numbers of giant basking sharks, with the University of Exeter/Marine Conservation Society (MCS) aerial survey spotting 18 sharks off south-west Cornwall in just two hours on Friday.

“It is wonderful to witness the return of these spectacular animals around our coastline” said Peter Richardson, MCS Species Policy Officer, “During the aerial survey we also saw common dolphins, which, along with the basking sharks have been mistaken for Great White Sharks during the recent media feeding frenzy. We didn’t expect to see Great White Sharks and needless to say we didn’t spot any!”

The aerial surveys are funded by the European Social Fund, with additional support from MCS and PADI Project AWARE. Friday’s aerial survey also detected sunfish, and previous surveys have recorded bottlenose dolphins, harbour porpoises and grey seals. Through the aerial surveys, the team hopes to understand the distribution and seasonality of the different species of wildlife using Cornwall’s waters, and also inform the local marine wildlife watching industry that is fast becoming a local tourism attraction.

“These basking shark sightings indicate that Cornish waters are an important summer hotspot for this protected species. Basking sharks have become a significant tourist attraction for Cornwall, but anyone wishing to see these amazing animals should go with a WiSe-accredited wildlife watching trip in order to avoid unnecessary and illegal disturbance to them” said Dr Ruth Leeney, researcher at the University of Exeter Cornwall Campus.

The basking shark (Cetorhinus maximus) is the second largest fish in the sea, much larger than a great white, growing in excess of 11m and weighing up to 7 tonnes. They are regular visitors to British coasts, where each summer they return to feed harmlessly on inshore plankton blooms. Since 1987, MCS has run a separate project Basking Shark Watch, which encourages public reporting of basking sharks. In the last 20 years MCS has accumulated over 10,500 public sightings of basking sharks in UK waters, but no confirmed reports of great white sharks. Last week, MCS Basking Shark Watch received several basking shark reports from Cornish waters, with one sailor reporting large groups of sharks between Land’s End and the Scilly Isles on Thursday. On Friday observers at the National Coastwatch Institution at Bass Point, Lizard saw 19 sharks, while over the weekend Seawatch SW recorded 14 shark sightings at Gwennap Head near Land’s End.

Basking sharks are protected under national law and while MCS encourages the public to report their sightings, they also warn people not to get too close to the gentle giants.

“Basking sharks are large, wild and unpredictable animals that are protected under UK law from reckless disturbance, so boat users are obliged to keep a safe distance from them”, said Peter Richardson, who is also a post-graduate student at the University’s Cornwall Campus “MCS was alarmed to see the recent footage that some newspapers claimed was film of a Great White Shark. The footage clearly shows a boat getting too close to a basking shark and almost going over the top of it, risking serious injury to the shark and those on board. That sort of behaviour is dangerous, irresponsible and entirely unacceptable.” Ends

Record Tope Returned

Record Tope Returned Whilst Fishing At Luce Bay

Fishing On Ian Burrett’s on yer marks in Luce Bay Norman Tweadle from Hexam landed a potential new uk record tope in excess of the current record weighing 103 pounds.

To be able to claim the record the fish had to be weighed ashore but the policy for fishing Luce Bay with Ian unfortunately meant Norman had to miss out on claiming the record although he must be very proud of allowing such a magnificent fish to continue swimming in the seas off north west Scotland.

The local well known skipper Ian Burrett said he had seen thousands of tope landing on his boats over the years many upto the 80 pound mark and Ian believed this fish to be significantly bigger. The Luce Bay tope measured  75 inches, with a huge head, and girth of 33 inches.

Sustainable Sea Food Cookbook

Posted under Sea Angling News

Marks and Spencer’s Have Teamed Up With The Marine Conservation Society to produce The Sustainable Sea Food Cookbook

The Marine Conservation Society (MCS) has teamed up with Marks & Spencer to produce the “Fish and Seafood Bible – from the Ocean to the Table”, available in Marks & Spencer stores across the UK from Monday, August 6th. The Seafood Bible is the first recipe book that features only those fish that can be sourced from sustainable or healthy stocks, as described at the MCS sustainable seafood website www.fishonline.org. The Seafood Bible includes essential information and guidance from MCS on choosing sustainable seafood, together with a wide range of beautifully illustrated and delicious recipes for sustainable species of fish and shellfish.

MCS Fisheries Policy Officer, Dr Bryce Beukers-Stewart said: “MCS is delighted to have worked with Marks & Spencer in writing this unique recipe book for the environmentally conscious seafood cook. It’s a fantastic combination of advice on choosing sustainable seafood and ideas for making the most of those choices with delicious, easy to use recipes. Marks & Spencer has been recognised by MCS as the top UK sustainable seafood retailer in the MCS Supermarket Seafood League table in 2006 and 2007. M & S is strongly committed to sustainability and has a reputation for only selling fish from responsibly managed fisheries, sourcing their advice from the Marine Conservation Society’s seafood sustainability website www.fishonline.org.”

Marks & Spencer Marine Technologist Andrew Mallison comments: “Sustainable sourcing is at the heart of our fish business – we passionately care about the fish we sell. The consumer can play a significant role in driving change and ensuring that the seafood dishes we enjoy today will be available to our children to enjoy in the future. Marks & Spencer has been working with the Marine Conservation Society towards this aim for several years and continues to lead the way to make that happen.”

The MCS Sustainable Seafood Programme enables consumers, in the UK and Europe, to make informed choices when buying seafood to secure a sustainable future for fish. The first UK ‘Good Fish Guide’ book was published in 2002, followed by development of the widely acclaimed website www.fishonline.org. To provide up-to-date and easily accessible consumer advice about the sustainability of over 150 fish stocks the FISHonline website is updated annually, together with a Pocket Good Fish Guide which provides lists of Fish to Eat and Fish to Avoid.

More information about the Sustainable Seafood Programme can be found at the www.fishonline.org website. The MCS Pocket Good Fish Guide, featuring lists of fish to eat and fish to avoid, can be obtained FREE - send a SAE to MCS, call 01989 566017, e-mail info@mcsuk.org or download from the website.

Great White Shark

Posted under Sea Angling News

Great White Sharks

Sharks native to UK waters include the predatory and fast mako and porbeagle sharks. The shark in the original movie footage shown on the website at The Sun newspaper’s website, taken from the coast at St Ives, may well have been one of these two species. Whilst these sharks are very similar in shape to the great white shark, they are not as aggressive, don’t feed on seals (as the white shark does), and are commonly caught by long-line fishing vessels in the northeast Atlantic.

As yet there have been no confirmed sightings of great white sharks in UK waters, and no-one has ever been attacked by any shark in UK seas.

Members of the public should be more outraged than frightened, because it’s estimated that over 100,000,000 sharks are landed worldwide each year predominantly for the southeast Asian shark-fin soup market - and their numbers have plummeted by over 90% in the last 30 years in some coastal waters. Sharks are truly an endangered family - and they’ve been around since the time of the dinosaurs - but we may be responsible for making them extinct.
The second (’Sun’) footage taken over the weekend (from a boat of a ‘jaws-like’ dorsal fin) is undoubtedly that of a basking shark (see attached Judith Oakley image) - a common species seen close to UK beaches in the summer, harmlessly feeding on plankton - it effectively has no teeth. For more information on this grand leviathan of our waters (something for which we should be proud rather than scared), visit http://www.mcsuk.org/marineworld/baskingsharks/

Sightings of basking sharks should be reported to MCS online at www.mcsuk.org, by phone on 01989 566017, or freepost report cards, available to order from MCS. Marine turtle and jellyfish sightings should also be reported to MCS. Posters promoting the sighting schemes, as well as ID-guides and summary reports are also available free of charge.

Raising public awareness of basking sharks in our waters is not without its drawbacks, as the species is now suffering from its new status as a tourist attraction. Naive but deliberate disturbance from a curious public is an increasing threat. MCS has received numerous reports of sharks being surrounded by speedboats, or approached far too close. Collisions with boats are not unusual, as a feeding shark will not necessarily take evasive action. But even without a collision, it is illegal to disturb a basking shark in this way (under Schedule 5 of the Wildlife and Countryside Act). Please report such incidents to MCS, and also to the local police force’s Wildlife Liason Officer (every force has one). Observe the basking shark Code of Conduct (available from MCS and the Shark Trust) and use a WiSe-accredited operator (www.wisescheme.org) for any organised marine wildlife watching trips.

MCS is campaigning for a Marine Bill to provide better protection for marine wildlife such as basking sharks and establish a network of highly protected marine reserves. Plans for a Marine Bill have been set out by the Department for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra), but Gordon Brown is yet to commit to its delivery and MCS is calling for the Marine Bill to be included in the next Queen’s Speech and thus the next Parliamentary session.

Reporting on their catch Paul Lobley says

The sea was bouncing the night before last so me and chopper decided to go and give cod hole a bash, with a good few fish between us all in the 2.5 - 4lb  bracket, not a bad night we had
