Mysto from Ocean Kayak

Another great Angling Kayak From Ocean

The new Mysto from Ocean Kayak is a brand new boat with a brand new look. Whether you want to surf the waves or go paddling on a river or lake, this is a performance sit-on-top designed to have universal appeal. “The new Mysto is a great all-rounder for the family who want a really fun boat,” said the designer Spike Gladwin. “The styling is a departure from the traditional shape of sit-on-top – and it’s something very
different from Ocean Kayak.” The new Mysto has a sleek new hull shape but the craft remains very stable and efficient to paddle whatever your size or weight. Both adults and children can enjoy the Mysto. “Dads can use it, and even one of the kids can jump on with him,” commented Spike. Of course being built by Ocean Kayak, the world’s number one when it comes to sit-on-tops, the Mysto is lightweight and strong. The projected specifications are: length 9’9” (3m), beam 31” (0.79m), weight 43 pounds (19.5kg) with a maximum capacity of between 19 to 23 stone (125-147kg) depending on the conditions. Included in the design are some clever new features and in addition to the skeg, there are two small fins at the back of the boat to give additional tracking. “The bottom of the hull is shaped partly like a surf board, so at the beach even beginners will be able to surf waves,” said Spike. The main skeg also has a sacrificial plastic pad to protect the hull if the boat is dragged. When the pad is worn it can simply be replaced. Other features include self draining scuppers, moulded-in foot wells and moulded-in handles at the front and the sides. The Mysto is easy to carry and easy to climb back on board if you’ve been for a swim. There are also moulded-in tank wells at the front and back of the boat for storage and a moulded-in backrest, or you can use the integral anchor points to fit the backrest of your choice. Paddles can also be stowed in the length of the
boat when not in use. The Mysto is maintenance free, easily car toppable and very compact to store. Materials used by Ocean Kayak are repairable and recyclable. The Mysto is offered in a variety of vibrant colours and will be available in shops in the UK around Easter. The new MYSTO, and other great new recreational products from Johnson Outdoors UK will be on stand 1008 at the National Boat, Caravan & Outdoor Show, NEC, Birmingham 19-24th February

We have two Ocean Kayak Mystos and have just begun padding the South West Coast of England with friends on a Malibu Two.
The Mystos are great Kayaks, so easily maneuverable and really stable. We have just returned from an epic trip around Lulworth Cove and Kimmeridge, and although the Malibu Two got tipped over a couple of times by the heavy swell the Mystos stayed upright.
My only complaint is the speed, we just could not keep pace with the Malibu Two, and our friends had to keep stopping for us to catch up.
Can anyone advise if this is normal, two man Kayak v single seater? I keep wondering whether we should have gone for Frenzy instead?

As far as your dilemma goes, if you want to keep up with your friends then a prowler 13 or 15 will do the job.A frenzy will never keep up as the hull design purely pushes water and it is a too short.I left my friend dead in the water with his frenzy when out in my prowler whilst paddling across Weymouth Bay.The Mysto is a brilliant day boat and far more hydrodynamic than the Frenzy but it will never compete too well in the touring stakes. With a prowler 13 i’ve been able to paddle from Weymouth to Lulworth in 4hrs with a tent and food etc onboard. The return trip takes a bit longer due to the prevailing wind. The prowler is very stable as ive not capsized/fallen out once in the 3 yrs ive owned it.
