Yesterday's break in the wind meant I could have my first fishing trip out on the new kayak, the target was Cod off Runswick Bay. I had a nice leisurely start arriving at the slipway for 10am greeted with a flat calm sea with barely a ripple on the surface, sun was shining and the kayak was loaded up ready to go.

Steady paddle out and I was soon on the Cod grounds:

Though it was a bit fresh it was a lovely day, perfect conditions for a day sat at anchor

There was a little bit of the ebb still flowing so I dropped down a squid and blacks cocktail, whilst waiting for a bite a porpoise made an appearance. Always nice to see them though can be a pain to get a photo of!

Started to get a few rattles from the smaller fish then came the usual Cod thumping bite, struck but bumped it off (doh!). Dropped back down but the tide had now stopped which normally knocks the fishing on the head. Whilst waiting for the flood to start the wind picked up plus my brother and Scott turned up on his little Shetland

They anchored up and let me tie on the back by which point the flood had quickly started, their look nice and comfy :)

Fishing was a bit slow, I managed a Cod but by now the tide was flying through. Wouldn't know it on the kayak though, seems to handle it very well. A quick move was in order, slightly closer into the bay where the tide isn't quite as strong. Nice rough ground and less tide meant the bites were coming in on a regular basis, ended up with 5 Cod but only 2-3lbers. I did hook into something a lot bigger but feel off.

Nice to get days without wind, especially at this time of the year.
How did the yak shape up Sam?

Wind got up in the afternoon, Scotty offered me a tow back :) Who am I to say no.

Love the new kayak Ray, not the quickest kayak out there by a long shot but as a fishing platform it's well thought out and a joy to use. Happy chappy :) Matty, it's got cod crap on it now so pleased about that :)

  5. I was out on Avante and we where anchored up near you at some point

Given my experience of uptiding I would have preferred being out on the Yak

It was a good morning for it

    Cheers
