Thinking of booking a trip out next week (whitby) after the festival is over and done with and have a few questions,
what sort of numbers are being caught? (I've been following the festival dailys and can see there's been some good fish but are there a lot of smaller cod / ling about ? )

And is it worth going so soon after the festival (with the wrecks having such a hammering over the last few weeks)

    Cheers in advance

    Re: How's it fishing ?

Your probably looking at the best year in 10 to 15 years for numbers of fish, and as you've seen we already have cod over 20lb coming in. Yes its worth booking any day you can regardless of how close you are to the festival, infact why not book in the festival ?? Every tide is different and no 2 tides are the same.

if the waters coloured then favoured techniques are uptiding inshore, and with a 23lber caught only a month ago and some boats average 20 cod per man then uptiding should never be over looked.

If the waters clear then every day that goes by should give better fishing. Best time is from Now and right through till August for cod fishing. If the tides are small then boats will favour wrecks to the south of the town, if they are slightly stronger then likely they will head North, there are that many wrecks and reefs its unlikely you will be on the same one as the boats visited over the last few days, As tides and conditions change so will the skippers techniques and destinations.

The only thing that is going to stop you catching fish this year is conditions. There are stacks of cod out there, the shore anglers have had a bumper winter and the local all time club record has been smashed by a brilliant angler taking advantage of the large number of cod about. On the boats its fished consistently well most of the winter when the weather has allowed them to get out.

To keep an eye on what is happening and for day to day reports then you should watch the festival results, reports from Sea Otter 2 and of course our forum topic where local boats can report their catches - at the link below :

Also can I suggest the following boats as decent ones to book. Im in no way shape or form saying the other boats are no good, however these boats support this forum by making regular contributions and posting reports and pictures, therefore I try to help them by suggesting them as boats to book for a good days fishing.
