More bonny fish coming to the scales the tides are now down so the next few days if the weather plays ball will be very interesting.

Nice fish for what looks like the last day of the festival (our trip is cancelled).
A nice surprise on the conger too.
Well done to all involved in the Autumn festival- there has been some superb fish caught.

Been a few congers in the last year. Strange how they appear from nowhere.

Re: Whitby Angling Festival - Autumn 2013 - Mistress Is Top Boat So Far

Makes you wonder when anglers get 'smashed off' on wrecks, possibly a big Conger is the culprit. Spoke to Mick Baker last year (retired skipper of Wandrin Star) who told me several years ago he helped release the Conger Eel they had in the Sealife Centre at Scarborough.
According to him, it weighed in excess of eighty pounds!. As no-one has reported one of this size being washed up along the coast or caught in a net, then it's possible its still in the area.
It has been commented in the past that the water temperature around the NE coast is too cold for Congers to thrive in long term. 2 years ago whilst fishing a wreck 18 miles out of Whitby, it may have been the Olav or a similar name, i was told a big Conger resided there, which had been seen by a diver. Fact or fiction, i've no idea, but the 15lb one caught today i doubt has swam from the warmer Atlantic waters on the SW coast where they reside in abundance.

Had 2uptiding last winter tony one was 20lb and the other 15lb both in 50ft of water they are around but not in great numbers you just never know when is going to pop up .

When fishing a mark that has congers, its evident they are there in big numbers. You sometimes get smashed but you always see congers come out everytime you fish. It seems we have a few on this coast but certainly nowhere near the numbers they have elsewhere.

Father And Son Nail The Doubles In The Festival On Sea-Otter 2

The last few days of the festival the lads have hammered the lings on thursday there was well over 100 lings onboard friday the best fish went 18lb and yesterday once again today the boat was laden with fish lings proved to be in vast numbers but also some quality cod came on onboard the best went 14lb for regular man mal from middlesbrough .

One lad who i say was extremly unlucky yesterday onboard was John Holder john is a very good angler comes well prepaired and yesterday was no exception john was fishing with 120lb trace line and with that sort of heavy line if you hook into a big fish your chances of landing a big fish are very very good john hooked into what i can say was a very big ling john managed to get it 20-30 ft off the bottom then it took a hugh dive and smashed his 120lb trace line gutted i think i was even more dissapointed than john extremly unlucky for that to happen with trace line of that calibre the one that defernetly got away.

Young jack vero was onboard yesterday with his dad john and once again young jack was at it again banging those lings out 12 year old jack got a ling just ounces under 14lb but then his dad next drift got one over 14lb both just missing out on daily prizes .

Dave helping jack with his big ling .

Another belter for this young man

Then jacks dad john gets his best it went over 14lb

Jack And His dad together they both just missed out on the daily prizes.

There was stacks of ling for the lads between 10- 12lb

Then mal who got the second heaviest cod in the summer festival got this 14lb cod A very nice fish a couple of years ago we had a 19lb cod off the same wreck in the late summer festival and was pipped for first place on the last day.

There was few other nice cod john who got smashed by the big one today gets a nice cod.

    A few more nice fish

Davids fish from thursday it wnet 18lb 8oz a very thin ling looked like it had been on a diet a bit unlucky this time of year they are normally full to the brim with herring which gives them a lot more weight.
