    Scarborough Fishing Festival

Nine days of angling competitions start this Saturday in the 103rd Scarborough Angling Festival with Boat Kayak and Shore matches.

Saturday sees both boat and shore matches with the shore match being 2 till 6 weigh in by 7 the winner the heaviest bag of fish. With high water at 6.13 pm ht 5.88 hopes will be high although I expect the water will be green.

This match gives the angler the opportunity to target different species with cod, coalfish, bass, pollack, and wrasse the main species likely to turn up.

Popular marks are likely to be the piers at Whitby, Marine Drive at Scarborough, Bempton and Speeton rocks and the cliff top marks at Bempton, Flamborough and Filey.

Good luck to all those competing, we will try and keep posting results during the week.

Even if you dont fish the matches it is a good chance to see where anglers fish and what tactics they use, I would say there will be anglers at the above venues on sat and expect most of the fish will come from these places.

Thanks Glen weather looking good so hopefully will all run well.
Paul shame All England on a slack tide I must admit I would like to see the biggest match fished on a big low water ie this Sunday but they like to have it on the last day and as with all match fishing its the same for everyone.
Ian, I am also really looking forward to it spent the £83 and bought all shore tickets but the bait collecting is painfully slow for me each crab collected feels like iv won a raffle

It all starts tomorrow, had a look over drive at teatime and sea was green as grass and fairly flat colour state may be different at other venues up and down the coast and finding clear or coloured water could be the key to success.

Maybe ok for bass I am no expert in fishing for them but for daylight cod fishing I prefer it either clear and the clearer and flatter the better or coloured brown anything in between ussually means poor returns but thats only my opinion. Wrasse can be caught well with a bit of green, pollock lure fishing the clearer the better, billets prefering colour also.

I am the same when it comes to codlings Ian

Proper colour with sea or dying sea or nice blue sea flat calm conditions :)

Crappy in between colour and conditions make for tough choices and poor nights sleep before a match ::)

Do not have the official results but can tell you it was one of the best weigh ins I can remember 60 some fished the match with 48 weighing in.
    1st Mark Thomas 21 fish ( 20 cod ) 41 lb
    2nd Matty Hillaby 13 fish 33 lb
    3rd Steve Ianson 32 lb
    4th Paul Medd 26lb
Heaviest Single Fish Matty Hillaby 8lb 11 oz
2nd HSF Mark Thomas one just short of 5lb
Marks below the cliffs at Bempton were the most productive with some fish on the tops. There were some fish at other venues but there was no competing with bempton today, I am told Marks arms were cramping up going up the ropes not one for the faint hearted or weak in the arm.

I wonder how often the shore match outweighs the boat match, must be a fairly rare event?!
