Intruders have robbed and wrecked a visitor centre, fishing lodge and office and forced the temporary closure of the popular visitor destination. Scaling Dam reservoir on the moorland border of Cleveland and North Yorkshire was ransacked between Sunday evening and Monday morning (1st and 2nd September).
Extensive damage and theft of stock running into several thousands of pounds is being investigated by Cleveland police who today appealed for witnesses. It is expected that the visitor centre and the popular trout fishery will be closed for about a week to allow police to carry out a full investigation and for extensive repairs to take place.A substantial amount of shop stock, outdoor clothing, fishing tackle and cash was taken and there is considerable damage to the building and its communications and power.cleveland police today appealed for any witnesses of the raid at the reservoir on the A171 Guisborough to Whitby Road. Anyone with information should contact investigating officer pc Stephen Woodacre on the non emergency 101 telephone line.
Don Coe, Fisheries and Waterside Parks Manager for Northumbrian Water, said: “We will do all we can to get the lodge and the fishery open again as soon as possible. It’s a very popular spot which has so far this year been enjoyed by more than 4,500 people for walking, fishing and picnics.
“We want to make sure that this destructive and wanton damage doesn’t spoil the future enjoyment for very long as around 10,000 people will visit Scaling Dam during the season from March to October,” he said. News of the fishery reopening will be posted on ‘Fishing with Northumbrian Water’ Facebook and information will also be available on the Leisure line 0845 155 0236.
The sailing club at the reservoir is not affected and remains open.

Hope they catch the little s**ts! Bad enough to steal the shop stock but didn't need to damage everything, really are some low lifes out there

Looking at the bigger picture- Scaling is one of the most accessible venues for disabled anglers and families so I really feel for those who have lost a weeks fishing because of these mindless idiots.

I'm hoping that NWL will get me a list of what was stolen so that people can keep an eye out for anyone trying to sell it as Ebay and forums are the most likely places it will turn up.

The thieves targeted an extensive range of outdoor clothing with the brand name “Deerhunter”.
Dress and outdoor jackets plus trousers.
Mainly olive green or camouflage style green, brown and cream pattern.

If you are offered these or see them for sale please call Cleveland Police on 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800555111.
