Is there anywhere local with a decent supply of decent plugs? eg, yo zuri, rapala, or do you have to send off to a mail order firm to aquire them?

Whitby angling supplies used to have a good supply or Rapala but its under new owners these days so it may no longer be the case. Sounds like your like me ray and would like to look before you purchase ?

I do like to look Glenn, also I would prefer to buy off local dealers whenever possible. I don,t want to sound too critical as I,m not the one who has to buy expensive stock but most of them, not all, seem to cater to the tourists and seem a bit out of touch with what,s hot and what,s not in the fishing world.

Maybe there is a need for someone to specialise in gear used by the locals ?

I am actually thinking of selling a bit of tackle through the site in future. Maybe worth getting hold of a few quality bass rigs that we know work.

I've tried every other method of getting dav's favourite popper variety mate, but he wont let anyone into the secret. Not even lobbers ;)

Seriously though I am thinking of selling a few quality items that we know work eg shads, hooks, rigs etc. The site as a whole (not just the forum) has quite a decent readership now so maybe they would be interested Got to find some way to the cover the expense of the site hosting ;) :). Only trouble is finding a supplier.

Whitby Angling has rapala Ray but most are fresh water patterns - was there today and got an x- rap in white which dives to 3 - 6 foot, theres no classics like the j-13 or slivers, also no surface lures - I think the bottom GB has some rapalas but not sure which - I like Veals mail order as the service is good and they have the best range - I won't buy anything other now than the proven manufacturers - the last thing you want is to put loads of hours in and for the plug to let you down when you get a hook up

Cheers Iain, thats how I feel. After listening to people who do quite a bit of plugging and reading up about the subject the general opinion is get the tried and tested one,s. Unfortunately there,s no way of telling what is a good plug just by looking at it. A good pointer when looking at the Veals site is the one,s that are alway,s sold out are the plugs that work. There,s nothing worse than fishing when you have little confidence in your end tackle, my fishing time is precious so I want to give myself the best chance possible, not only to catch fish but to suss out area,s for future reffrence. I,d be loathe to think that I,d discarded a potential hotspot due to the fact that my tackle was,nt up to scratch. As always, with fishing there,s variants, but just as quality bait over a season will come out on top I,m pretty sure the better lures will too.

Ray thats what its all about mate ...confidense in your end tackle , i suffered with a big confidense issue with bass for a couple of years , now it seems to becoming together ,,,, i think the key is finding the fish and to be honest they will take a number of plugs n spinners,,, i also think when it comes to bass lures people like veals etc etc are the places to get em from ....i find the local tackle shops either specialise in rapalas or the cheaper type of plugs , which ive actually seen work , i witnessed a 6lb plus bass caught on a fladen conrad which only cost about 3 pound the other week , i wouldnt worry about looking at them before you buy em , just get a order placed , go for things like x raps, crystal minnows, maria angel range, and the likes of them..........once youve found them like i said i wouldnt worry about whats on ure line so much as the range of lures which catch them is very wide.....just persevere....

I find the size of some of these lures off putting Dav. Some of them look as big as any bass I've seen. Is there any particular length and weight I should be looking at ???.

dont let the size put u off glen ,, i have a few lures upto about 13 cm long , but the majority of the lures im using range from 9 cm to around 12 cm ,, bass like alot of predatory fish will gladly take fish upto half there own size and possibly bigger , i tend to stick with lures around the above size and they work ,,,,,cheers

Will a bass eat a fish half its own size or will it like fined a way of just eating some of it and discarding the rest. I knew cod were big feeders but dont know much about the bass.
