Need an eccentric lever (bale arm) for a 525 mag and reel also needs a good service.Took it into a local tackle shop, who i shan't name in case of slander reasons, and was told it would take around a week.4 weeks later no result! No part no service! So if anybody has the part i need and can service reels,or knows of someone who can, please let me know.

Not quite all the truth in that post Steve is there

As you were told when you dropped the reel in at the shop Redcar Angling (the shop in question) they don't service the reels themselves but only act as a dropping off and collection point to allow the reel repairer to collect and return the said reels, you were told that again when you phoned on Tuesday so you should'nt be inferring that any delay was the result of any inaction by the shop as the shop don't have any input other than phoning the reel repair man to come and collect

The reel repairer is a well known local man and has serviced many members reels from this forum , mine just the other day for a fiver and that was for bits and labour but he had the bits in stock

You said on Tuesday when you phoned that you could get Penn parts by return of post in 48 hours and i think now you're finding out the hard way how wrong you were as you're obviously having difficulty getting the parts for your reel

If you want to blame anyone then blame Penn and Pure Fishing as its them who now outscource their reel parts and the service from them is now abismal. Anyone with a Penn or Abu reel will find out that their once easily available spare parts are a nightmare to get hold of so anyone wanting bits for their Penn and Abu rels are now in for a BIT of a rough ride

In reply to what brian said i must stress that i was told that although the part had not been located the reel however had been serviced.this of course turned out to be untrue! 4 weeks without being serviced is not on in my books.Would you accept this from a garage if you took your car in? I think not.

brian carragher Whitby Fishing Forum _ Simply The Best

If you took your car into the garage and the engine was knackered do you honestly think they'd do a service on a knackered engine or do you think they'd wait until it was repaired and do both jobs at the same time, its the same for reel repairers, they won't service a knackered reel, they'll wait till the repairs are done and then do the service

You can service a knackered reel a dozen times and its still a knackered reel until its fixed, if you want to have a pop at anyone then have a pop at the clown who put your reel back together for you and shagged it up for you

The fact that you had to take your reel in a box full of reel bits to someone else to sort it for you says volumes and seeing as how you never got charged for anything tells me that no offer of a service ever was given

What you should have done if you had any concerns was to have spoken to either the shop or asked to speak to the reel repairer direct rather than coming on here to have a go,better by far unless thats not the way you operate, stiill not my concern other than knowing the reel repairer and shop owner, the reel repairer known by many on here too

Ref reel spares, I nearly always buy my spares online from "Mikes Reel Repairs" based in the US. Parts and delivery are cheap, only had good service from them.

Your missing a major point here Brian, and its one that no amount of clever talk or criticising can get you out of. I was blatantly lied to in the shop on Monday when i asked if the reel had been serviced. And i disagree that the part was needed before the reel could be serviced. The reel is not knackered it works perfectly well when assembled apart from the part in question. You seem to be taking this all to personally and i never mentioned you in the first place.I am taking the advice of a fellow forum member and sending the reel to a Penn specialist.

In the past I have used Ewan he used to be the penn main repair agent I think? now works from home

Servicing costs are as follows: (Per Reel)

    • £15, e.g. GTI, GS, Senator, International Baitcaster and Fixed Spool + Parts + Return Postage
    • International Class reel, Big Game £25 + Parts + Return postage
    • 2 Speed reels, £25 + Parts + Return postage
    • Repair only not a full service (TBC)

What happens when a reel is serviced?

Servicing a fishing reel is a long and time consuming process, each reel can take up to 3 hours work by a reel technician, in this time he will fully strip each and every single part of the reel, remove the bearings, put the bearings in the sonic wave tank to remove all grease and lube, clean all other parts with a special cleaning solution in the parts washer, pressure wash all parts with fresh water and put all parts in the parts drier. The bearings are put in a lubricant and again, put through the sonic wave tank, this allows the lube to work its way back into them. The technician will assemble and re-grease the reel and repair if necessary. Finally the reel will be spray protected with our rod & reel cleaning & protecting solution. All grease and oil is X-1R, space-age technology approved by NASA.

    • Reel fully stripped
    • Bearings put in sonic wave tank to remove grease and oil
    • All parts cleaned in parts washer
    • All parts pressure washed with fresh water
    • All parts put in parts drier
    • Bearings then re lubed in sonic wave tank
    • Reel assembled, re-greased and repaired if necessary

Will I have to pay for the parts separately?

If you require parts this will be added to the final cost.

Where do I send my reel for service?

Send your reel to me at the following address along with your name, address and phone number. I recommend that you send your reel by recorded delivery
