Good showing of Mackerel on Libbys 3hr trip this morning. Best we have had all year, about a bucket full. 2/3 at a time, so lets hope there here to stay. See what happens on the 5hr trip tomorrow if we go.. Any one else had any Mackerel catches?? Noticed they were catching Billets on the pier end last night on our way in. Another boat had caught one after the other whilst sheltering under the cliffs yesterday.

Now have some on west coast at Whitehaven but quite small and fishing off the piers has been slow. Blanked yesterday, not a thing and only saw a couple of mackeral caught. Out off Whitehaven today on boat and quite a few mackeral and loads of small whiting, nuisance !! Coming to whitby next Thursday on Trot On so hope for a few codling for freezer. :)

stickman There's a difference between fishing and catching!

I was out on Mistress last Wednesday and the only mackerel we found in any number was on a wreck 20 miles out! Many of them were around 6 inches long so made good ling bait.

We picked up the odd one here and there but even the marks round the bell buoy were empty when we tried for a few on the way home! They are very patchy this year but the water clarity is poor until you get further out. Having said that, they are being caught off the pier from time to time. My fiend was on the pier a few evening ago and only got one mackerel!

Best we have had all year, about a bucket full

Any one else had any Mackerel catches??

    regarding the above,

1/ can get a box of size mackerel every run out, only keeping bigger ones

some for freezer, eating, rest for pot bait.

2/ as other post, any amount of "joey" size ones would make excellent free lining bait/pike bait

but returned as no time at pres to enjoy freelining, will not "land" for pike bait, don't want to

be in scales of justice etc. (anyone know how ammo etc sell them?)

we are getting regular visits by dolphins redcar-grove inside 1 mile, obvious bait fish about

but dolphins not affecting mackerel to date.

    footnote,

1st time in 2 yrs this morning the mackerel had sprats/small herring in the gut sack,

last 2 yrs they have all been empty, also 4 herring caught on tsunami hokki type

    traces.

why they seam hit & miss Whitby way is a strange one.

any thoughts from party skippers etc etc?

Coming across from west coast for trip on Thursday morning, wondering whether to bring some frozen mackerel or do you think we will be able to catch enough fresh to use as bait on charter boat. Hope weather is ok. Are people generally fishing with bait, shads or hokkais , fancy some nice cod rather than ling this trip.

Hello lom , we were out today plenty of cod averaging between 4-7lb . Shads seem to be doing the buisiness at the min. We did manage mackerel but there still not in the numbers they should be . The wind got away by afternoon so we came in for bout half 2 .
