Hi there,
I have just joined this lovely forum looking for some help,
I am an Italian fly river fishing addict and after several years spent in Scotland I have recently moved to Beverley East Yorkshire.
I am desperate to find good trout waters, and since there is not much available around Beverley I have been trying to widen my search. I came across the article about the Esk by Bucko posted on this web site, and the river looks really promising with the kind of fishing I was after.
I was thinking about the Danby stretch, is this the best part of the Esk for some dry fly action for trout?
Are there also any fly fishing clubs I could join? It would be nice to get in touch with some local anglers...sharing knowledge, meeting people and all.

Any other rivers in the area on day permits or reasonable joining fee?
I had a look at the Rye and Derwent but there seams to be very little information available on the web

Thanks a lot to anyone coming to the rescue of a desperate fisherman....

If you look in thread of Mulberry Whin it will give you some information on the Trout fishing there. Its is only about 20 mins from Beverley. The river runs very closed to the road up to and beyond North Frodingham so it would be well worth a ride out to view the river. As for the Esk there are quite a few free stretches of water witch can be fished for trout, sea trout, salmon and grayling. The free stretches do get quite busy when the water is in perfect condition. You will have to get up early to beat Bucko onto the water though.
There are also many threads on here that will give you some detail of the Danby stretch of which you can get a ticket for the day or the season. Very good value at £15 for the season.

Hi Lele,  Have you tried the Driffield area? There is supposed to be some good trout fishing on the  Driffield Beck. Also around Malton you'll find cheap day tickets for the River Rye and Seven.

Hi Lele,

I can recommend the Danby stretch, great place to spend a day's fishing and as mentioned above at £15 a season it's good value. You can pick up the season tickets from the post office in Danby. I couldn't tell you if Danby is the best place for dry fly fishing on the Esk as I haven't fished any other stretches but it is good.

Cheers,
Sam

Thanks everyone for replying,

I will definitely give the Danby stretch a try, I had a look at some pictures and the river looks really good,
plus at £15 it really is very reasonable.
by the way it is all wild trout or there are some stokies as well?

I had a look at the Driffiel Beck, problem is that it is all private and the only stretch available on day tickets is at Mulberry whin, great water, but given the price it is not something I can do regularly (maybe just once a season.... cry)

Nicepix, any ideas on where to ask for the tickets for the Rye and Seven?

thanks again guys

As stated in previous reply, the Esk has brown trout, sea trout and salmon as well as the odd grayling. The odd person does put stockies in, but is not looked on favourably because of the re-stocking of salmon and sea trout. Brown trout love to feed on young salmon parr. I know of one brown trout that was caught a few years back and it contained 6 young salmon parr in its stomach.

Lele,  I was told that day tickets can be purchased from the petrol station just outside Malton on the York road. I haven't fished it myself, but I walked it last year or the year before and there was some very good grayling tucked away here and there near to Flamingo Land. There is also some really fast stretches that look 'trouty'.

Hi Lele

You will find info on Costa Beck (including the bit Clive Nicepix mentions), Derwent and Rye on this link:

http://www.ryedale.gov.uk/PDF/Fishing%202006(1).pdf

As for the Danby Stretch- if you are an angler that likes to 'roam' then this is probably the longest stretch you will get access to.
Small dries in size 12-16 will pick up fish all along that stretch.
I've had success in the past on the Esk at Ruswarp with bushy, sedge type dry flies at dusk as well.

Dalby Beck at £1 a day sounds interesting too.

Bucko,
thanks for the link, lots of useful info in there .....great stuff

as per the Danby stretch,
I like to cover a lot of water, therefore a long stretch is what I was after...searching for fish with my wee dries.
I will definitely get up there in April;

thanks to all for the great tips
I hope to meet some of you on the river soon

Lele
