Help please anyone, My son has asked to go for a days fishing at scaling over the next 2 weeks and as it is over 20 years that I have fished this water any advice at all would be greatly appreciated.I have several float, match, quiver tip rod and reels would any of these be suitable ? also what line bs ? what hook size ? what method ? and what bait ? What is power bait ? the last time I fished scaling it was fly and worm only lol.
Does anyone know opening/closing times for scaling please ?
I have also seen a "starter" fly fishing kit in the local tackle shop and would love to have a bash with this so thought I could try this as well while up there so any advice on rod/reel line type and fly/lure type would be really appreciated please.I also intend to have a go on the local rivers and streams this summer (esk, loftus beck, staithes beck, tees etc) so any advice at all would be helpful as all my fishing over the last few years has been sea fishing and commercial muddy puddles and I am totally out of touch with the art of trout and freshwater fishing.

Right foo

When i go up scaling i use my float rods so you should be ok with yours, I use 8-10lb line on my reel and size 10-8 hooks.

Theree are two main methods that i use that see me through most eventualities.

The first on is the one i use for worm and powerbait( power bait is a sort of blu tacky paste that smells of fish, You can get it in a wide range of colours but i mainly use spring green, orange and white, you can buy it in most tackle shops but keiths at saltburn does a good deal where you get 2 big pots for £6, which is good as a single pot half the size of one of these is £4.50!)

Here is a pic of some jars of powerbait and a box of poly balls

Anyway back to the rig. What i do is  thread a lead weight straight onto my main line and secure it with two split shot or a ledger stop. Make sure that you have a long length from where your weight is secured to your hook, 1 to 2 foot should be enough. When you tie your hook on thread 2 large white polyballs on( they are availiable from the tackleshop at scaling) then mould a blob of powerbait on the hook. When you cast out the polyballs lift your trace well off the bottom so that the fish can easily see it. This is the method i use most often

Here is a pic of it, not the best pic in the world but it gives you an idea of the trace length .

The second method is using a feeder with maggot, just set up the same as with the powerbait but swap the lead for a maggot feeder and shorten the trace to about 1 foot.
Then just fill the feeder with maggots and put 3-6 on maggots on your hook, This is a good method when power bait isnt working and can be hectic when a shoal of trout is on your maggots.

As for opening times i think it opens around 8 am and closed at 8 or 9 pm.

Might see you up there as im going to go one day next week.

As for fly fishing, I  bought a leeda xl stream fly for £20 from redcar angling and i think it is a good rod for the price i also got a reel for another £20. Usual trout flies will do the job,

A few good patterns for up scaling are cats whiskers, dawsons olives, nomads, hares ears, pheasants tails ect. Ive recently been trying flyfishing down skinny beck and have had a few on small nymphs but i also had a few on dries, Klinkhamers, cdc buzzers.

Here are some pics of the flies i use

From left top to right
Deep buzzer, shuttlecock buzzer, hothead buzzer, rutland buzzer
Montana, egg fly, goldhead daddy longlegs
Klinkhamer, Pheasants tail nymph, green klinkhamer, grey klinkhamer, cdc shipmans buzzer

Cormorant
Dawsons nomad, dawsons olive
Minkie, cats whisker
black nomad, Green fritz

Hope this helps foo

If you need any more help just drop us a PM

Good work there Dan- sterling advice.
The only couple of things I would add would be a couple of muddler minnows for when things warm up a touch and some small black flies such as Zulu, Kate McLaren, Black Pennel and Black and Peacock Spider.
What 'spots' do you rate there Dan? I've always thought the Whitby end of dam wall is the most productive spot, for me anyway.

Whitby end of the dam is by far the best IMO but i usually fish up the other end near the shop before the dam bends as ive had some good catches up that end.

I like the moor side best for flyfishing, especially the part opposite the whitby end of the dam.

Cheers

Right here goes a list of what I got from local tackle shop after advice from Dan and other  members(much appreciated cheers)When I got to shop this morning I was guided to a young man that certainly seems to know the game, after a chat about the combo kits on offer he explained that although the rods and reels were of reasonable quality the fly line wasnt and it would be like "trying to cast a washing line" in his words so guided me to this lot for a novice : Leeda 6/7 weght rod, with viper large arbor reel loaded with quality floating fly line and backing line, pack of 3 standard braided leaders, intermediate poly leader, reel of 6lb drennan fly leader, pack of 3 idiot proof black,3 x bloodworm,3 x dawsons olive,3 x orange midge,3 x cats whisker, also bought 2 tubs power bait,2 x 0.5 oz weights,2 x maggot feeders, assorted shot, pack of size 12 and pack of size 10 hooks plus invaluable instruction on attaching leaders, flies etc. Total cost £70 I think I got a bit of a bargain what do you lads think ?

Well here goes, would love to say we came we saw we conquered but.............on arrival at scaling this morning it didnt look good when there was still unmelted snow on the road side but on we went to the fishing lodge to buy the permit.Talking to a friendly ranger there, many thanks, and he advised sticking to either end of dam wall as sport was slow but odd trout coming out at either end,at least he was honest about the slow bit, lol, anyway set up the feeder rod for the young un to have a go (only allowed to fish 1 rod at a time)filled feeder with maggot and worm and maggot on hook.5 mins later a definite bite showed on the rod and the bairn struck into.............nothing.Ah well thats fishing so rebaited and started again,30 mins later another good bite which unfortunately ended the same way.Bu**er at this point the bairn was a fair bit miffed and then the hailstone started. After sitting in the car for half an hour we decided to seek refreshment in the layby along the road, cracking cuppa and a mean bacon butty, nice one.
Feeling fully refreshed and with the hail, rain, sleet and snow finally easing we returned to dam.
My turn so armed with a "cats whiska" out went the fly line, all of 5 yds.Anyway I persevered and was getting some reasonable casts going before the heavens opened again and we had to take shelter.
Next out went the feeder rod again and within 5 mins the end shot round with a positive bite, wait for it,wait for it wait for it,bang rod shot round and fish on. After a very hectic fight a buitiful 2.5lb rainbow trout slid over the net and was ours, yippeee after much back slapping and impromptu photos it was my turn again.Would love to say I managed a trout on the fly but alas I failed,However thoroughly enjoyed ourselves and will deffo be back when it warms up.Only saw 2 other trout caught so everyone had a hard time today.
Many thanks  yes :wink:for all the advice and even though todays attempt was a failure as far as the fly fishing goes it has made me more keen if anything to master the art so maybe a smaller venue next time with the possibility of a few lessons thrown in cheers all and tight lines.
