Salmon/Sea Trout Spinning Rod - Whats The Best ?
« on: March 16, 2008, 01:30:35 PM »
What is considered the best set up for salmon and or sea trout spinning ? Is it the case that the most expensive rods are the best or are any of the cheaper rods up to the job ?

The Rod I use on the river (I havent bothered for 3 years now) is a daiwa whisker 9 foot.

What about you ?

Have too agree with you Glenn,Daiwa whiskers are great for down on the Esk,I have two one 8ft and a 10ft.
Use the 8ft for most of the fishing on river,Great for flicking spinners into tight space's when your in a tight spot up river.
The 10ft i mainly use when there's a bit of water coming down and need to use bigger mepp's ,flying c's(when there's maybe a chance of some cracking fish)as you know!!

Daiwa Samurai 10ft- doubles up as a nice plugging rod too.

If i was going to buy another spinning rod it would be the B&W Multispin, but they are pricey for the way i treat spinning rods.

Spinning on the Esk I use a Shakey Ugly Stik 8ft(great rod) not too expensive either, with a shimano 5000 re bait runner (single handle) with 15lb nylon (maxima) This combination works really well I feel with the conditions of the river being able to cast anything from 5g up to 45g, so that covers the light mepps to the heavier flying 'C' s.
When the river is low I will go down to a 7ft rod which is easier to cast into tight spots. It too is a Shakey, but cannot remember the model.
For the tweed I use a Greys 10ft rod with up to about 18lb nylon depending on the time of the year. Nothing really any bigger is needed, some people do use the 11ft. It has a weight range of 6g to 60g so more than capable of handling big lures with a big fish on the end. With the reel being a Shimano 5000 gtx or something like that (double handle). I do tend to use a swivel (use of a leader) when using this rod on the tweed.
