Derwent

Best flies     Dawson's Olive, Black Fritz, Cat's Whisker.
 Best baits     Powerbait worm cocktail.
 Best areas

Murray Point, (between 1st and 2nd fence) for bait, Cronkley Bay for fly.

Another week of poor weather conditions has hampered fishing, with the water temperature still only at 6C.  Anglers are finding the fish shoaled up and any angler that does hit on any of these shoals is catching almost a fish with every cast.  Paul Dunn was a perfect example of this when he caught 8 fish and returned 12 more, fishing the fly on The Meadow. He lured these fish with the Black Fritz, a top fly for this time of year. The fish are still tending to stay deep so intermediate lines are the order of the day.

Bait anglers are finding the fish congregating on Murray Point between the first and second fence, with several 8 fish catches from this area during the week. The warmer forecast and some double stockings of 2,000 fish should boost the fishing prospects for April.

Whittle Dene

 Best areas     Lower.
 Best methods     Pole with feeder.

Another productive week at Whittle Dene despite the cold conditions seeing some good nets of roach coming from both the Lower and the Great Southern lakes.  Steve Wood had an excellent session taking 125 roach weighing in at 14lb, whilst N. Beardsley took 85 roach for 10lb. Not to be out done, B. Evans also netted 10lb of roach, all of these large nets were taken from the Lower Lake.

Kielder

 Best catch     3lb 7oz rainbow.
 Best bait     Ledgered worm.
Best areas     Tower Knowe, Hawkhope Slipway.

Ian McDonald landed rainbows of 3lb 4oz and 3lb 7oz on worm from the bank at Little Whickhope, there have been seven other rainbows over 3lb caught from Hawkhope Slipway. Tower Knowe Visitor Centre has also fished well for bank anglers.

The boat hire times for April will be from 9.00am until 3.30pm, these are available from Leaplish Waterside Park.

Tower Knowe is now open for permit sales between the hours of 10am and 3.30pm, Environment Agency rod licences are on sale from Tower Knowe Visitor Centre and also from Leaplish Waterside Park.

Grassholme

Best flies     Orange or Black Fritz Booby, Cat's Whisker.
Best baits     Ledgered Spring Green Powerbait or maggot.
Best areas     Anywhere around the Dam end.

Easter saw atrocious weather conditions with heavy snow showers causing the fishery to be closed on the Saturday.  However, those hardy souls who braved the elements on the Sunday returned a rod average of nearly five fish per angler. Ledgered baits have been the order of the day with Spring Green Powerbait the choice of the week.  Not surprisingly, fly anglers have been scarce on the ground and with fish lying deep.  However, sinking lines with Boobies have taken occasional fish.

Hury

Best flies     Viva, Black Cat's Whisker & Kate McClaren.
Best areas     Scoon Bank, Deep Bay & Reedy Bank.

The onset of winter conditions did nothing to slow the sport on Hury, with a rod average above 5 fishing has again been excellent with many anglers returning good numbers of fish. Some superb fully finned fish have been recorded with many above 3lb. Black and green lures such as Vivas have taken the lion's share of the fish and, with the fish still hugging the banks long casts are not necessary, indeed some anglers are wading in too far and scaring fish away.
