An article in the January edition of 'Improve Your Coarse Fishing' magazine featured some fool who had devised a new wonder groundbait - Bread and Milk mixed to a sloppy goo. Claims to get enormous bags using up to six litres of milk during a five hour match.

Heres the problem -  Milk is one of the worst pollutants to put in a fishery. A quote from one website I visited reads:

"Milk is a highly polluting substance in terms of its oxygen demand.
"In real terms that means the bacteria will feed on it and use up oxygen that
would otherwise be used by fish and other animals living within the watercourse.

Do a search for "Milk Spill" on the internet and see for yourselves. True the incidents I read about involved thousands of gallons, but these spills were into rivers and reservoirs which are usually fairly large bodies of water. Imagine a couple of dozen anglers each putting a gallon or more of milk into a small stillwater fishery. Repeat this over a few days - the consequences don't bear thinking about.

If anyone is considering using milk, please do the research and reconsider. Urge anyone you know to do the same.

You have to wonder how many people will read that article and start piling the stuff into they local venue. You would think it would of been researched more before printing it in the magazine.

I'd hate to think what would happen to these commercial waters where you could have 20+ match lads feeding 3kg each, like you say over a short amount of time it will go badly wrong. Apparently cat meat causes problems as well due to Carp not being able to digest the fat leaving a fat layer on the lake bed, don't know if that has been proven though.

Remember reading a long time ago that fish shouldn't be fed on any protein from warm blooded animals because, as you said, they can't digest the fat. The magazine I read it in was either practical fishkeeping or Aquarist & Pondkeeper - haven't looked at either of those mags for over twenty years, so the problem has been known about for a long time.

A lot of modern anglers are behaving like the commercial fishermen they complain about -  big bags of fish by any method and b-gg-r the consequences.

What gets me is this thing where people seem to think they NEED to throw in kilos of bait otherwise it just isn't worth it (specially with some carpies). The magazines don't help.

I can understand on some venues where there is maybe large shoals of Bream, etc but to many people automatically throw in 5kgs of bait no matter where they are fishing and conditions. Friend of mine was fishing a Cheshire Mere last year and watched 3 carpies spoding bait continually for over an hour, now that is a lot of bait! is it necessary?

Like you say a lot of people use any method and b#gger the consequences  angry

it goes the same with using trout pellet for carp (were as proper carp pellets are, I think, pure fishmeal) - just too much fat in them and I dont know if its true or not but carp were litirally splitting there skins...

Regarding putting mounds of groundbait in - one of the best saying I ever heard was "you can put it in but you can't take it out" - ie if you put too much in to kill your swim - game over  happy

Aye, exactly  yes Problem on some waters though is that there are carpies putting over 20kg sometimes! Obviously not everyone is like that but it amazes me just how much bait some people are prepared to chuck it, wonder how much of it actually gets eaten though? Probably some very fat Coots about  gum

Wykeham had a problem with the frogs killing the Carp during the frog spawning last year, lost about £10,000 worth of Carp apparently  cry Been told it is much better now though.
