FOLLOWING a highly competitive weekend of male-dominated match fishing, two ladies walked away with the plaudits and with the cheering of their fellow competitors still ringing in their ears.
It was the weekend of the Angling Times Team Championships Northern Semi-Final, where two of our top teams competed against some of the best anglers in the country on two different venues.
First team up on Saturday was Newman Scott’s who fished the Browning Cudmore commercial complex and put in a sterling effort before ending up in joint sixth place.
Some pride was taken in that Graham Lowery took fifth place with a very respectable 28lb.
But day one belonged to a lady. Former world ladies champion Wendy Locker, who owns her own tackle shop, fished a brilliant match under trying conditions to put 33lb on to the scales to win the match.
On Sunday down on the Walsall Canal, it was the turn of Darlington-based Browning Quaker, who just lost out on a place in the final by coming fourth.
Once again some pride was salvaged by Peter Close, who came second, beaten by yet another lady - 17-year-old England ladies international Sam Perkins, who weighed in a mixed net of small fish for her winning weight of 8lb 1oz compared to Peter’s weight of 7lb 4oz.
