I can't wait to get back on there once the season starts. I love the place, for some reason I much prefer to catch a 8oz Brownie from the Esk than a 5lb Rainbow from Scaling/Lockwood. Plus beautiful surroundings help

Glad you enjoyed chaps. Its a tough river to crack and as with most fishing what works one season falls flat on its backside the next.
I can't wait to get back on there too Sambo- Its a real challenge.

I only started fly fishing about 6 weeks before the end of season last year so I'm very much a novice but I did manage some Brownies up to 8oz on the fly (which I was chuffed with!). Fished worm on the last day of season and managed two Brownies at 2lb 2oz each within 20mins which was nice (and very much a surprise!). Need to practise my casting but luckily the Esk is only 2m wide so I can just about reach the other side with my casting!

Excellent description and report of the river Bucko.
The new season Will soon be here (44 days) and hopefully the restocking programme that is under taken every year will pay dividends again. Last year I believe was a little disappointing for the salmon numbers. Fishermen/ladies were hoping for a better return on the salmon numbers, some put it down to the strange weather patterns we had last season. Plenty of water in the late spring and summer, and very little rain in the October (apart from a couple of small rises) which usually brings a spate nearly every week, but it just didn't happen. Never mind.
I have been told that it has been a good spawning time for the sea trout up all the becks which is very encouraging, but salmon (in the rivers) not quite as much going on in previous years (maybe they are spending another year out at sea) but there was still a heathly amount seen spawning which is good news. Roll on the 6th April. I am sure that there will be the odd hardy sole out having a go on the 6th.
According to the old stagers that both salmon and sea trout do run the river all year round.
Make sure that should you hook into a fish and land it that you know the difference between a springer and well mended kelt. I will try and find a pic of both of them side by side so you can see the difference.

Thanks Sambo. Since I bought a digi camera last summer I think I will have taken more pics with it than I did ever before with my compact. So easy to use, simple to down load onto computer then to post on places like here.
Esk season will soon be here, it always seems a very short season. I think it should open same time as the Tyne.
I will post some pics of the tweed on a new thread sometime.

Couple of pics I took a few weeks back at Danby. The place doesnt look nice this time of year though with no leaves on the trees and the gras doesnt have that real lush green colour to it. Roll on summer

Yes a really great article that Bucko. I thoroughly enjoyed reading it. Cant wait to get going again. I mainly fish the free stretch at slieghts but also have the occasional days on Egton estates.

I don't think anyone said that there wasn't any water during the summer, it was in the back end that the river was short of water.

Back end last year was a non-starter,No fish to even try for,First fish started to show at sleights mid november.
