derwent very low???

Not sure whether any one can help here but my neighbour told me to go check my boat on the river today, unusually my boat is sitting in the derwent in almost 3ft less of water than usual, ive had to slacken off all the ropes as they were tighter than they have ever been in 4 years. can or does anyone know how to explain this??

There hasn't been much rain of late and whatever moisture is flowing through the soil will be held up by the frost.
When Autumn fishing for salmon I've seen rivers unfishable at teatime fine down to a nice level by the next morning due to hard frosts holding the water up.
