River Fishing - A nice evening on the Ure

Having joined Thornaby AA this year me and Sambo decided to take advantage of the nice weather and have a session  fly fishing on the Ure at Kilgram Bridge.

I arrivedto find Sambo already in the water and he'd just caught a nice Grayling of about a pound (his first on fly) before I arrived but returned it quickly so no photo.



I had a wander upstream and missed one or two rises to my grey duster, before i spotted a few fish rising on the near bank about 20 yards upstream. I dropped the duster in the right spot and got a brownie - about 14 inches long but very skinny..



Sam got a small brownie and had a few other takes then just as the light was beginning to fade i cast to a rise downstream and got a much plumper brownie which gave a good account of itself.



all were returned safe and well. What an absolutely beautiful place it is and I cant think of a better way to send a summer evening

I've fished it myself Matty, and like you say, it is a beautiful place to fish. Well done on your catches and glad you both had a good evening's fishing. Theres some really big Brownies in there, and also Salmon as well.

that looks like fantastic fishing guys, not fished the ure that far up, I use to fish Borobridge way. You just know you got to try that lark off the yak, both in the sea and freshwater

Davo, funny you should mention Salmon. Sambo saw one jump and estimated it about 12lb

Myself and Matty were talking about this the other day, we reckon Ullswater will be a good place to go. Plenty of Trout, Perch and some Pike (apparently).

It certainly is Martin, and the good news is, that Thornaby actually own the Kilgram stretch outright. They bought it about 30 odd years ago apparentley and rather cheapish too.
 
I've just said to Sam that i fish the ressie first then drop onto the Ure for a few hours, so its the best of both worlds really.

when you say the ressie, do you mean thornton steward? or leighton?

I've fished both, my grandma used to live nearby and i have a lot of relatives in the area so know it quite well.

Caught my biggest ever rainbow (10lb overwintered) from Leighton and got some good fish from Thornton steward - this is going back to the Y.W.A. day ticket days though, haven't been for years.

I used to fish the day ticket stretch of the river Cover a lot when i was younger too, that's another lovely secluded spot.

Great news on the Kilgram stretch, I can see myself spending a lot of time there this year.

Have you fished the oxbow lake at all? Sam went down there yesterday but never saw anything

Thornton Steward Martin. I fish leighton as well but havn't for about 18 months now. I started fishing Thornton in the Y.W.A days (about 1988 -1993). Then stopped for some reason. I started fishing it again last season because i joined a club that has the leash, so its free of charge to fish once you join the club. They still do day tickets though.

I havn't been to Oxbow yet, but it sounds an interesting place, so i'll check it out sometime. Where abouts on the Cover do you fish- and what species are there to be caught?

on the Cover I fish the Cover bridge Inn stretch - you buy tickets from the pub, which is handy!

When I used to go you could fish right down to where it joins the Ure and in that stretch there was some good Size Grayling - My brother caught one about 2lbs. Now I think you can only fish upstream of the cover bridge but its a very long stretch and very secluded. There's a lot of brownies in there and a sprinkling of grayling.

The pub does a lovely pint too

Felling Fly Fishers have thornton don't they?
It used to have a fair few coarse fish in it too, is that stil the case?

Yeah its Felling Fly Fishers who run Thornton, and theres still quite a few Chubb and Perch in it. Thers plenty of Brownies in there as well, which i assume are wildies got in from the river, like the Chubb and Perch.
I'm from Mbro Martin and its only an hours drive to Kilgram/ Middleham area-so not bad really. I'll give the Cover a go this year one day, then drop onto the Ure for the evening (thats if i dont end up in the pub).

Stockton A.C have a stretch of the Ure at Middleham which might to your taste Martin.

I'm waiting to sell the house, then when thats sorted i'm after buying a  kayak.  I need to sell the house before i get the Yak though, as i havn't got a garage at the moment to house it.

I grew up fishing the Ure at middleham Dave. My grandma lived in harmby which is the village on the opposite side of the valley. me and my brother used to walk down and fish it. We used to get a lot of trout, chub and gudgeon in them days.

My other Gran lived in reeth and we had a 5 minute walk to the stretch of the swale that thornaby AA own so I cant wait to give that another try

If you are going over to the ure/swale any time give us a shout and me and sam will try and join you

Its a nice place to grow up Martin, couldnt think of anywhere nicer to be honest. I'm hoping to fish the Swale /Ure sometime next week, so i'll let you and Sam know. Cheers

nice one matty hope our lads with the diggers did not spoil your day mate lol yes there are a lot ov salmon in the ure more now than there ever was our neighbours son had 2 last backend on the fly both just over the 10 lb mark  seen a few dead kelts too on our stretch
