This is a sea angling forum for the debate of all angling related topics, including: shore fishing, boat and kayak fishing. Here you will find pictures of anglers going sea fishing and catching fish. You will find angling related debate. Sometimes anglers will retain fish for the table. Whilst we respect the personnal choice of anglers to follow catch and release practices, this is not a conservation forum and devout conservationists unable to accept anglers sensibly retaining fish should seek out alternative forums. Anyone preaching catch and release or criticising other peoples reports will have their posts removed.

I'm far from an expert on bass plugging Glenn but I would go for a lures that will cover the depth of water in which you are fishing. Good lures manufacturers state at which depth the plug work. If you can get them within 4 ft of the bottom I would say that was fine if you are fishing in only 4 ft of water then a popper or slider would be fine.  There are some plugs which fish at only 1ft which would be a good alternative to surface lures in shallow water. Some plugs fish deeper the faster you wind them but you need to be able to see exactly what you are doing around rocks otherwise you will snag. It makes sense to use only floating plugs around rocks as you can bring them to the surface and steer them past snags.

There are loads of effective colours and patterns and I don't think it is too important. The first bass I had strike at a plug, the plug was comming in sideways as the line had caught on the middle treble!

So having said that you are going to end up with a bucket full of plugs like the rest of us!

Yeah we beleive you bazza  ;D ;D...i,l be due out on my mates dory soon , when the weather  perks up abit , invested in a couple of slivers ,to troll close to shore and reefs ..cant wait......its alot easier looking in the veals mail order magazine  glen the web page looses me    i got a mag in 06 dedicated to bass fishing about 10 pages of lures,,,, just mainly to give me an idea of the different types of lures available and the  depth ratings   and i then looked them lures up on e bay , a typical surface popper would cost about a tenner ,yet  from e bay you could half that , even with the postage , especially if you get a variety ,,,, ive even had macky on plug type lures so if they dont work for bass there not wasted  even salmon and seatrout will have a go glen ;D, i was using countdown flouro orange size 7 to 9 for salmon n seatrout last year on the esk with abit of success...alot of attacks even had a brownie of about 12"....flying c`s are reccomended for bass glen as are dexters ,tobys etc etc , anything flashy and eel like , but like everyone says its finding the little twaxxs ;D

Gonna have a look in Whitby angling. They were the cheapest place I ever saw for Rapalas so maybe they might have other lures in.
if i were you glen ide get em off e bay bud , there a rip off in tackle shops ....
floating diver rapalas sizes 7 9 and 13 in blue n blk ...countdown flouro orange type sizes 7 & 9 for salmon seatrout , and other yo zuri type surface lures which i would assume to be difficult to buy from ure local shop , ive only seen em on e bay n mail order....but do ure sell a favour E BAY

i am reluctantly going to tell you of the deadliest bass plug, its small , its a pappala, and its a shad rap.
its meant for salmon i think but i found out by accident it is absolutely son of a guning deadly.
use your imagination as to what colour shad rap, ie, SR???, but at short range, they are unbeatable, then after that a skitterpop of the same colour, murders them over the shallower water :(

ive watched abass looking for crabs ray and if id had a peeler with me then i would have had him as he didnt touch my lure. butterfish or any other small fish under a float, i read mike ladle uses o cork to fish his live baits under, he uses mackeral with good results though the ones we get up here would be far to big id have thought. dav the only time ive fished from a boat for them a diving iluminous green lure was outfishing anything else by miles so much so that the lad who had it lent it to me to save me from blanking. lobbers what depth does thhe shad rap dive to?

I believe you baza. One thing I might have overlooked is something the locals used to do in Essex when I was working down there is a big softy doggie on a float. Maybe Prof has some experience of this ?

something to be said about a big, "crinckly", (already peeled doggy).
i swear by them, they have a shorter fishing time span than normal peeler because they have already peeled and taken on a lot of water, if you have bass in front of you they are deadly, they throw a lot of scent quckly, but dont last long on the hook, all my missed peelers(taken on water and peeled), go to this method, also float fish them whole for wrasse off cowbar gulley, very effective ;D

No first hand experience Ray but you're right about this style of fishing down there. The first time me and my pal went to a place called the 'Hole in the Wall' on the Crouch estuary at Canwedon, we came across a guyser who was feelining big 'crinkly backs' that he'd picked up of the mud that morning virtually under his rod end. He clearly knew what he was about as he had two bass to ~6lb+ on the bank, so I naturally decided to interogate him. He opened up without me having to remove any of his finger nails  ;) and admitted to having had several bass over 10lb fishing this way over the years.

On Walton Pier you see anglers just walking Regills up and down the pier (the lures are in the sea obviously  :)), along side the structure. This apparently is the favoured tatic for bass there, although I never saw anyone catch one doing this.

On Southend Pier, towards the end where they had the fire damage, the locals use short rods to drop all manner of baits and jigs, directly through gaps in the pier to fish right among the structure. I'm told bass to 10lb have been caught this way too, but it looked pretty hairy to me!

Never followed any of this up myself though, as I had brilliant coarse fishing on my doorstep and the Sea proper at Clacton was 75 miles from my flat down one of the lousiest roads in Essex. We were ambushed one night by three Essex boy cars on the way home on the A 120 and they blocked us in and down to 20mph until I put the internal light on and they clocked the size of my m8 Pel ;D. Whole different world down there, but Essex girls are fine by me, despite all the stick they're given.

Cheers, T
