Hi Kieth, I thought this was going to be easy and I would just be able to reel off a dozen campsites for you. Its not that easy though. Whitby is such a size that you will never be more than a couple of mile away from where you want to get to. Theres Saltwick bay campsite. The fitter amongst you might want to launch from Saltwick, otherwise Upgang and Sandsend Slipways are within a couple of mile. Then they allow camping at Stainsacre hall - again a few miles to the slipways. I arent sure if the campsite on Sandsend road takes tents ? if so thats the closest to the easiest launches. Then theres a site at Hinderwell about 2 mile from Runswick which is a beautiful place to fish - very scenic. Theres some info on the launches at this link : http://www.whitbyseaanglers.co.uk/kayak-launch-sites.php

My brother inlaw has a campsite on the outskirts of whitby. It's a bit basic at the moment, but by june, it should be fully operational, with showers, toilets. If you want to give him a ring his number is (01947)601542..

It's bloody easy money for them - the parking at the lighthouse goes up each year, last year it was 70p an hour, this year it's a sodding pound an hour

Runswick about £1.50 an hour or something like £5 a day! Any summer yakking will have to be early morning just so I can get parked

You could always park at the top of the bank Sam, and get some good exercise pushing the yak back up.

Bloody disgusting parking prices ... you would have thought these councils would have wanted to attract tourists ..... NOT put them off .!

Thing is with Whitby and surrounding area is its a fecking licence to print money for the council. Whitby has been voted number 1 UK destination for the second year running and every bugger wants to come here and dont Scarborough council just know it. They dont need to encourage anyone as they come in their thousands. So what does the council do ? Doubles the fines for illegal parking, employs London style traffic wardens and sticks up the prices in the car parks right around the region (Musn't forget knocking down the toilets to get in 2 extra parking slots on Church street). Scarborough Borough Council is run as a business not a service. Cross the border into Cleveland and you can have free parking. But who would want to go there Ill get me coat

not sure if this is of use but we used to get a yearly ticket for sandsend car park from scarborough council which worked out a hell of alot cheaper than individual days, but suppose its only really of use if you intend to go there enough to warrant it
