You will find angling related debate. Sometimes anglers will retain fish for the table. Whilst we respect the personnal choice of anglers to follow catch and release practices, this is not a conservation forum and devout conservationists unable to accept anglers sensibly retaining fish should seek out alternative forums. Anyone preaching catch and release or criticising other peoples reports will have their posts removed.

What's more important - top bait or top presentation?
« on: September 13, 2008, 06:16:18 PM »
I'm interested to hear the thoughts of other anglers on this one.  For me A1 presentation of second class bait will catch more fish than poor presentation of top quality bait.

If I find a perfect drift in the boat I usually catch fish regardless of the bait quality.
If the drift is too fast then even top quality bait won't catch fish as the presentation of it is poor.

Apart from making sure the juices leek with a little snip of the crab with scissors, bait presentation does never enter my head.

to me they are both equally as important.it's no use having top class bait if you don't present it properly.likewise if you only have poor quality bait then presenting it the best you can will give you more chance than presented poorly.

This year I've had no real choice as to the tides I've fished.  I've fished in tides I wouldn't normally bother with, but it's been the only time the wind has been suitable.  Normally I like 2.2 - 2.5m between high and low which gives a perfect drift.  This year (and I've only fished 5 times so far) I have fished tides over 4.0m between high and low.  Even with light tackle I've got to constantly move the bait, so the presentation (and cod catches) have been poor.

Last year I got to pick some great tides and caught loads more cod.

Its knowing where to put the bait thats what counts :gum:.  fish are scavengers and will eat most baits thats through at them. presentation i dont think it matters to sea fishing.  :gum:

Bait quality is far more important to me   although I do make sure its presented well enough so that the hook point is well clear.

I would rather be fishing a poorly presented big fresh edible peeler in tomorrows match than a perfectly presented strip of mackerel !!
