This is a sea angling forum for the debate of all angling related topics, including: shore fishing, boat and kayak fishing. Here you will find pictures of anglers going sea fishing and catching fish. You will find angling related debate. Sometimes anglers will retain fish for the table. Whilst we respect the personnal choice of anglers to follow catch and release practices, this is not a conservation forum and devout conservationists unable to accept anglers sensibly retaining fish should seek out alternative forums. Anyone preaching catch and release or criticising other peoples reports will have their posts removed.

2 ways of doing it on holderness

Small rag worm baits on a carp rod about 20yds out behind the surf for the scoolies

or blast big crab baits out at distance for the biggies (only at certain times of the year tho)

Not the best pic but I tied these to use in Wales. Unfortunately it was a bit windy to have a size 1/0 whistling past your face.
Given calm weather (yeah right) I intend to give them a go from some of the scars at low tide.

HI BOB i fish wales for bass pb 9 and 4oz i have had lots of fish between six and eight on live flounder or dabs  best if u can bait a small hook for the dab with big hook above probably best done with second rod as we all know that when u want a small one it never happends ???

I was having a bit of banter with Mike Ladle the other week and mentioned the 2-3 inch dabs I was catching at the same time as the local bass. He said:

"I'm sure that bass eat flatfish.  Why not try them as livebaits?  Alternatively I guess that the bass would not be totally preoccupied and would take any 'fishy' lure (plug, shad, Redgill, etc.)  I suppose an unweighted shad could be persuaded to fish on it's side along the seabed???"

And while I was mentioning scaling down the tackle and size of bait he said:

"If there are big bass (5lb+) there a live mackerel could produce the goods.  Your idea of 'scaling down' the fly is a possible but it only really works if the fish are preoccupied and I'm always inclined to up rather than down the size of my baits at other times (old habits die hard)."

In my experience a surf pays off along the sandy beaches I fish, although first and last light a flat calm is ok - rag worm and crab on a longish trace - although this time of year a fish bait should come into play - most fish on the beaches seem to be school fish but you will get a few big ones turn up - I am going to try a joey in late summer/autumn at close range dawn/dusk - but this is all trial and error - over rocks don't need surf, gentle roll to glass is ok - crab early on then plugs - like Dav says a great way to fish and roam - look for sand meets rock - I think the bigger fish are around the rock with bigger gullies and reefs - I've read "as a general rule the bigger the boulder the bigger the bass" - water should be clear as they hunt by sight - now is the time till autumn to use plugs/spinners - again Dav's right find out by any means you can (even kidnapping) to get info on where bass are/habits etc.- the methods are endless Glenn but once you get the bug forget any personal relationships

are you going to be using live joey quint ?    ....it just in all the years of mackying up this neck of the woods ive never seen one under a lb ... ;D....must be our rich sea ,there like bloddy tuna up here ...i wonder , at one of my spots they seem to gorge on sprats, maybe floating a freshly caught spratt under a bubble float and let the tide take it to prvent the sprat from dissintigrating when casting  ...

I'm convinced that the lunkers patrol the edge of beaches at dawn/dusk, particular late in season where a big bait would maybe score - live bait would be best but this could restrict you if you can't get it - I would put out 2 rods on the ratchet and experiment, whilst plugging/spinning with a third

Good store Bucko, I've just ordered 3 Maria Angel Kiss' from Veals this pm - sometimes the lures catch more anglers the fish!!

What trace would you use for livebaiting please ? also how would you hook a fish oand on what size of a hook ? or is it hooks? and do you need some sort of aerated bait bucket to carry your livebait ?

I would of thought one swivel for reel main line and other for hook length

Looks that way. If you think back to phil's initial post about trolling a redgill behind a float you can sort of imagine how it works.

It's all a bit trial and error at mo Glenn - but would start with about 2 foot running ledger - the lead would be as small as possible - hooks to suit bait and maybe pennell it - I have one of those eddystone livebait containers and airstone pump - if  livebait was unavailable and if conditions were flat you could probably freeline a dead fish or squid 10 yards out
