This is a sea angling forum for the debate of all angling related topics, including: shore fishing, boat and kayak fishing. Here you will find pictures of anglers going sea fishing and catching fish. You will find angling related debate. Sometimes anglers will retain fish for the table. Whilst we respect the personnal choice of anglers to follow catch and release practices, this is not a conservation forum and devout conservationists unable to accept anglers sensibly retaining fish should seek out alternative forums. Anyone preaching catch and release or criticising other peoples reports will have their posts removed.

Damn right  wink  happy

Think it too early up this way yet, you need to be looking at least into the middle of June - but I may be wrong  happy i got the advice - find the mackrel, you'll find the tope. Uptide and attach a rubby dubby bag to your anchor line

Buy your rigs off Ebay, only 1.50ish each, 60lb trace and 80lb rubbing leader plus a running link  wink

(and all this from someone who has never caught one  embarrass )

No seriously ray, I have a neighbour two doors down who owns a boat out of Hornsea boat club, he targets them every year and bags up, a bad day is 7 or 8 fish. These guys  dont fish far out down Holderness and use simple tactics, I don't think for one moment it would be a difficult job to target them. Landing one on the yak will be fun but has been done many times on the south coast, I've heard anchoring is neccassary to give you leverage ( I thought it would be fun to be towed by one but apparently that is a no no) and I think as long as you let them run and play them directly over your bow it should not be a problem. Spoken to Clive about this and I think we agree it would probably be best to unhook them in the water rather than bring one aboard but hey you never know.  happy

My neighbour is happy to take a few of us yakkers under his wing so to speak and moor close at hand if assistance is required and most importantly put us onto fish.  wink  happy

Jack

few bits that I can add - cps might add some more when he's back from battling tarpaulins (think thats what he said happy) in Florida.

Hook is generally 8/0 Gamakatsu Octopus Circle - just make sure the hook is nicked right in the top end of the bait - if there's too much bait in the bend of the hook, they don't work so well. Done ok with 8/0 Mustad bronze O'Shaugnessys as well.

Most important bit is don't use a mono trace to the hook - seen lots of book & magazine articles & stuff on TV how it's ok to use mono traces - I wouldn't risk it - we've had wire go with tope - I'd guess they don't bite through the stuff like you'd bite through a carrot, but think the trace gets wrapped round a sharp bit of tooth, kinks & breaks - we're pretty sure mono would go the same way, but more easily.

Trace doesn't need to be over long - most of mine are 9-12" My favourite is 2 strands of 40lb 49strand Drennan or Fox pike wire - very thin & flexible - crimped at hook & swivel, but also use some heavier 49strand stuff - not sure what bs, think maybe 30lb, but it's much thicker & stiffer (which I don't much like) than the pike wire.

Crimp to a strong, small swivel - Berkley Crane Swivels/ Gerrys Powerswivels are fine & plenty strong enough.

We then use a heavy - 80 - 100lb bs mono rubbing leader. I like 8-10ft, & seems to work ok.

Sinker (never needed to use more than 6oz down Holderness) runs on a link swivel & stops at a bead above the rubbing leader.

Hope that helps a bit - good luck & look forward to hearing how you get on - we've had tope in June previously (2006 I think) but more usually its July.

Cheers

Mart

Following DEFRA's move to make tope a protected species ( http://www.sacn.org.uk/Conservation-and-Political-News/Tope_Protected.html ), there's now an official Code of Practice that covers handling etc

see:  http://www.sacn.org.uk/Articles/Tope_Code.html

Gosh Leon that's bad news for all those hardened northerners who wanted to drag the tope ashore, hang it in the living and gauge chunks off it every every evening for a month after a day down't pit. Looks like shark fins soups off the menu for our posher readers too  sad Just have to stick to bass pie, when the dog ain't hungry  whistle

God knows what Leon will do when he discovers they still hunt Whale at Filey  wink

In all honesty all the anglers I have met have utmost respect for their environment and their targeted species, non more so than these guys who target the tope. Do we really need "Codes Of Conduct" for everything? the bloody things are creeping in left right and centre. EG  Flamborough - "Code Of Conduct", Tope - "Code Of Conduct", Bait Digging - "Code of Conduct".

What next a code of conduct for taking a dump ? People who go fishing should get on with just that and enjoy it. People who write "codes of conduct", stick them on their site and tell everyone how to behave should post thier links on forums where like minded fools hang out.

no wink happy  Do DEFRA and it's "elected" bodies ie: BASS not understand that 99% of the people targeting these fish handle and release them correctly,it's the 1% who don't that need to be clamped down on.

Anyone wanting to know about tope will seek out the relevant information just as Jack has done here. Anyone who has total disregard for the sea wont give a toss and will probably harpoon them anyway. I just find it very insulting that people with little idea of fishing, local cultures and the people involved seek to tell everyone else what to do. There is enough information amongst us to be able to sort ourselves out. People who write this crap and have desire to dictate to everyone should stick to attending meetings in parliament and leave the fishing to those who care about it.

I agree with you Glenn
Its getting beyond a joke now Cant do that cant do this?
Ive been fishing all my life my father and grandfather before me and They taught me to respect all living things Just as I teach my children
All this Red Tape is a waste of time and money
Theres many more important issues in this world for governments to attend to instead of telling me how many Whelks I can catch...
