Well Done To Ryan Vasey AKA Ryanfish For Winning The Whitby Fishing Club Junior Section.

Polite Notice

This is a sea angling forum for the debate of all angling related topics, including: shore fishing, boat and kayak fishing. Here you will find pictures of anglers going sea fishing and catching fish. You will find angling related debate. Sometimes anglers will retain fish for the table. Whilst we respect the personnal choice of anglers to follow catch and release practices, this is not a conservation forum and devout conservationists unable to accept anglers sensibly retaining fish should seek out alternative forums. Anyone preaching catch and release or criticising other peoples reports will have their posts removed.

Thoughts and reasons for line choice.
« on: August 10, 2008, 04:22:35 PM »
I know that a lot is down to personal choice and using what has been reliable wondered what you all prefer.

For the rough ground I was using the standard 30-35 lb line usually with a shockleader at the beginning of last winter season. Then I started to see that a few of the anglers in the press had been using lines as low as 18LB....Gary Pye for one or so he says in TSF. so I had a little foray into trying lines as low as 20lb (Ultima F1) the casting distance went up but the tackle losses did so as well, usually if fast up then you could reckon on loosing the full set from the leader knot.
So then I set about trying various lines and finally settled on the Ultima Distance in 25lb loaded on to a penn 525 for fishing the scaurs and bottoms but keeping my 535 and 7500's loaded with Penn super surf 35lb.I ve seen a lot of lads using blue sylcast in tow rope thickness but it does seem a very cumbersome line and my thoughts are that in heavy conditions with weed about it must be a disadvantage.
I know there will be a fedw if not a lot of differing ideas on what and why with line as we all have our own preferences just wondred what others are sticking with for next season,I know I am stocking up on 20lb for the distance tide marks and 25lb for the heavier stuff, with a few spools of 35 for the high tops such as bemmo where the line gets hammered on the cliffs pulling fish up against the cliff face. For the clean beach marks then I will be sticking with Sakuma Nite crystal in 16lb, lovely casting line.

Cheers Jellyworm

My line choice was based on finding something that would give me enough line on the 525 to b able to fish at the distances I usually catch fish at. In reality the line choice was based more on the real type. Having used most of the averages reels like slosh 30 and abu 7000 and 7500 I found something I liked in the 525 that wasnt available with the others it was a fairly nice casting reel, easy to get your hand around to cast, yet very tough and robust. So I needed to fish the 525 and found the line to suite which for me is daiwa sensor. The fact that it is very resistant to abrasion is an added bonus which has probably stopped me looking any further. For me the light lines over rock marks just isnt an option. I know it works and I know it serves many good anglers well. But the feeling in your gut when you snap off and have to replace a leader or a reel on a freezing cold day is more than enough for me. Anyone who uses this method deserves the advantage they gain as it frightens me. In saying this Im talkking about the very thin lines at 15 and 18 pound low diamter and not the 20 pound thicker lines like sensor which gives more strength

Anyone know the record for the number of separate reels used in a single day match ? I once heard Jeremy used 6 on the drive. Any advances on that .... ??

I usually fish 30lb over rough ground and 18lb (with leader) on clean beaches.
I have been known to fish as low as 12lb main line on the beaches when the extra few yards counted,
especially in a scratching match.
As for advantages / dissadvantages if weed is a problem, the biggest weed problem I find
is your leader knot. Not the thickness of your line.
Only my thoughts but have served me for quite a few years
