This is a sea angling forum for the debate of all angling related topics, including: shore fishing, boat and kayak fishing. Here you will find pictures of anglers going sea fishing and catching fish. You will find angling related debate. Sometimes anglers will retain fish for the table. Whilst we respect the personnal choice of anglers to follow catch and release practices, this is not a conservation forum and devout conservationists unable to accept anglers sensibly retaining fish should seek out alternative forums. Anyone preaching catch and release or criticising other peoples reports will have their posts removed.

Following on from the poll on your favourite rock reels I would like to gauge opinion of the ultimate beach/soft ground reel.

Please give your vote for your favourite reel and then offer details of why you believe that reel to be better than the rest. If you vote for 6500 please say which one and what gives it the edge.

If you would like an other reel adding to the poll just say.

I voted for the 6500 although I do like the slosh 20. I think the old rocket just has the edge as it runs so smooth when casting. However I also believe these reels are far from perfect due to the poor quality highly corrodible side plates.

I have voted for the 7ht as i have only used 2 reels out of the list, this been the Daiwa 7ht and Slosh 20. I think the 7ht is the best reel because it runs so smoothly and runs very fast  ;D

i used the 6500mag elite untill the penn mags came out.
the problem i had with the abu was that it kept re engaging when casting. just ask andy b what happened to my reel. he had a similar problem.
the penn mags i have had no problems with and will cast them as far as anyone else on the beach without the need for this I MUST PENDULUM LARK.

Post By The Prof.

If I were limited to just one, it would have to be the SLOSH 20 these days. I think ABU missed the boat by never giving beach anglers the reel they wanted a beefed up 6000. The 7000-drive side is perfect but the spool is not, the wide rims adding extra weight where it’s not wanted and width weakening the frame.

A fella called John Cormick built his own based on the 7000 drive side but turned his own spool and machined a CT frame. He published the results in Sea Angler, May 1983 and I can’t understand why ABU didn’t just copy his reel? I feel ABU have lost a lot of ground to Daiwa and Shimano now, I would love to try the beach-sized Calcutta but it is too rich for me.

The Shimano Speedmaster TSM II FSC was very highly rated on clean to mixed ground, anyone still use one (heard Shimano were going to sell them in the UK again)? Similar to the SLOSH 20 and I agree with Robq that the SLOSH range are easily the best value reel on the market, except for Lobbers! Having read Lobbers trouble with the SLOSH, I may have to dust off my old 7000s if I do make it onto the rocks this winter. This would also enforce my boycott (one man?) of Jap' gear.

Seriously though Lobbers, what's occurring with you and the old SLOSH, how do you bust 'em m8?

Cheers, T

I have voted for the 6500 series because they are the best casting reel I have ever had and now that I have converted the gearing to 6.3:1 I have a good rate of retrieve.
I also like the 525 mag for rougher beaches. Any one had a go with the Shimano 400bsv on the beaches I have the 700bsv for the rock fishing and find it brilliant.

I have 3 sloshes (I think). They haven't had much hammer but one of them has bust in the same way as Paul explains. Where the seat post fits into a bearing within the reel frame, the seat post narrows and they are prone to snap there. I know several people have done the same. One of the bearings tends to wear fast as well, but Phil Mead can pick them up cheap so they are easily replaced.

Gwyn, I have just bought myself a UC 6500C and was wondering is it fairly easy to convert the gearing to 6.3:1?   ???
Certainly would come in handy.
