This is a sea angling forum for the debate of all angling related topics, including: shore fishing, boat and kayak fishing. Here you will find pictures of anglers going sea fishing and catching fish. You will find angling related debate. Sometimes anglers will retain fish for the table. Whilst we respect the personnal choice of anglers to follow catch and release practices, this is not a conservation forum and devout conservationists unable to accept anglers sensibly retaining fish should seek out alternative forums. Anyone preaching catch and release or criticising other peoples reports will have their posts removed.

Much the same as the old post, fishing the steps at Penarth (between the pier and Lavernock), tide was almost at high and I got stuck into a fish that felt pretty good. Within seconds I was snagged up and no matter how hard I tried I could not get it free, then the obvious happened and SNAP gear came away at the leader knot.
Kept fishing following the tide back out and after about 2hrs I noticed a nice 8lber on the floor with my lost tackle stuck in its mouth (nice).
Only fish of the night between 4 of us so it was a welcome sight.

Whilst fishing at Port Mulgrave, caught what turned out to be a 9lb Cod. got it to the side of the old pier, when a large wave picked it up and dumped it in a hole in the side of the pier. Tried in vain to get it out but it was stuck fast. So cut off my leader and tied it off and carried on fishing. When the tide ebbed far enough, i climbed down the side of the wall reached in a retrived a still kicking 9lber.

Had a funny one on the boat a couple of years ago i was fishing a wreck  when i picked something up which seemed to be a dead weight when it came to the surface i had caught some old braid which must have been lost by another boat while fishing the wreck there was also  some weed mixed in with the braid then i noticed tangled with the braid was a lobster which was about 2lb in weight i thought very nice then i started to gather all the lose braid up and noticed something quite heavy on the other  end of the braid so pulled it to the surface to my amaizment there was a cod about 8lb which must have  took the bait on the  hook on the end of the braid which was lost , a 2lb lobster and a 8lb cod still alive and all i did was pick up a bit of lost braid.

Many years ago ;D ;D ;D ;D, probably around the early 90's my favorite wrecking set up was the Shakespeare White Tiger (ugly stik), with Daiwa sealine 4/0 reel filled with parachute cord.  These white tigers became so popular everyone wanted one and they very quickly became like rocking horse sheite.  One day on sea trek (the original), we'd had a good day (as usual then) and decided to stop off on one last wreck, needless to say it was stuffed with good spragg.  First drop 1 cod @ 25 pound on the jigger, a 20lber on the next muppet and a 18lb coalie on the top muppet, after a long day it took quite some time to get that lot to the top, by the time I'd unhooked and boxed them we were back over the wreck.  Boat casting was in its early days, but a few boats (sea trek, Heather of Burnham (Rich Ward) and his old man Alan on Shytorque were having huge success with this when wind or tides were a bit on the strong side).  Anyway I jumped to the back of the boat, cast out and..................both my arms cramped up, resulting in the flaming rod slipping out of my hands (which were still covered in fish slime) and disappearing to the depths below.

I was gutted,  :'( :'( my White Tiger  :'( :'(, how the hell would I replace that, to make matters worse Crowey and Don, my fishing mates were both straight into good fish again.  They both landed 20lb+ fish and I had to borrow a crappy rod and reel someone had left on the boat, they got a few more fish each, although when I did catch one, mine were a lot smaller than the rest of them, as they kept on banging out good fish.  Soon Stuart announced it was the last drift and then time for home, we dropped down, and I went straight in, a half decent fish, but not huge, both Crowey and Don had good fish on although Crowey's was obviously a much better fish.  I could see mine 30 or so metres below, when everything went slack, the bloody thing came off, Don brought up another 20lber whilst Crowey had a fish of 25lb, it was giving him a strange fight though and as it came to the surface, it was obvious why, wrapped around the fish was a length of braided line, which looked suspiciously like parachute chord, as the fish was gaffed the line slipped and fell off the fish, luckily it wrapped round the hook of the gaff  :o :o :o

By this time hardly daring to believe, I started to pull in the braided line, after a while, the pirk and muppets appeared, obviously I need the other end, but it was definitely my gear.  I then pulled the line in as fast as I could with the nagging feeling beginning to grow of just how well had I tied the line to the reel, as the reel would still be in free spool, would the knot hold, had I indeed tied a knot?.  As the doubt began to creep in I slowed the retrieval rate, and after what seemed an eternity, the rod appeared below.  Luckily, there was no need to worry, the line had at some time overrun and done two lovely hitches and was as tight as a nuns .............. ;D ;D ;D ;D

With a load of line all over the deck Stuart suggested that we have one more quick drift whilst I sorted the line out.  He started the drift and I just dropped the jigger over the side letting the line follow naturally, whilst slowly winding back onto the reel.  The jigger hit the sea bed or wreck and I still had more line to wind on plus a small taffle to sort out, both my mates were already into fish and on their way up when Stuart shouted that we were past it, I started to reel in when I went into fish, a good fish :o :o :o  I eventually got it to the surface and it turned out to be a ling, all 31lbs of it, and turned out to be the heaviest fish of the day.

Just goes to show, that feel and confidence with gear is hugely important, with my own gear I was catching a lot of fish and good fish, as soon as I had to use other, less familiar gear I could hardly catch a fish to save my life, as soon as I got my prize back, things were back to normal.

Theres a saying that there is no such thing as lady luck and that you make your own, well thats as be, but confidence and familiarity are as good as luck any day.

I dont know about good fortune but this happened to me very recently, and i couldnt believe it at the time...I was plugging away for bass and the terns were diving after bait fish just 20 yrds from me, i was waist deep in the water and i chucked my plug out and it caught round a tern... :scared: so i realed the bird into me and held it against my jacket as i tried to untangle the braid from its wing, it was about 5-7ft up my line from my plug, next thing the bird almost got ripped from my grasp as a 3lb bass grabbed my lure just floating on the surface, i managed to untangle the bird and land the bass...My mate Anth couldn't stop laughing....  and called me a lucky ******

Was fishing Cowbar many years back and i hooked a nice fish on the flood on Cowbar steel, whilst winding close to the edge a big swell came a i lost it.. as i walked back curseing to myself, unknown to me the fish had been washed on to the scar and to my mates feet who was stood further down the scar..... a nice 9lber....Lucky
