This is a sea angling forum for the debate of all angling related topics, including: shore fishing, boat and kayak fishing. Here you will find pictures of anglers going sea fishing and catching fish. You will find angling related debate. Sometimes anglers will retain fish for the table. Whilst we respect the personnal choice of anglers to follow catch and release practices, this is not a conservation forum and devout conservationists unable to accept anglers sensibly retaining fish should seek out alternative forums. Anyone preaching catch and release or criticising other peoples reports will have their posts removed.

Summer spinning for pollock and others
« on: June 04, 2007, 12:24:47 PM »
Now then lads/lasses, as I posted previously looking forward to a full on winter on the rocks once I ve got all my gear together , however looking to do a few recce sessions this summer so I get a few photos of the marks Ill be heading to in the winter and thought I could use the time to do a bit of spinning. Will I be wasting my time ? Where are the best spots for a bit of jelly chucking ?

Regards to all Dave J.

I wouldnt say that bud , its just i dont think alot of the locals bother that much , theres plenty of ground around , and known pollock marks like filey brigg etc  , plenty deep water down there , although i tend to think ude need specific areas as pollack arnt as common as scotland,or down south area so it may be abit hit n miss alot like the bass....cheers

It's not my bag DJ but have a look at the 'Leadhead Fishing from the Shore' thread that's on p3 of this forum at the mo'. Looks like cps and Phil A are the people to talk to and the Brigg is the place to try it. Clearly worth a go judging by the photo's on that thread.

Cheers, T

I did a bit of deep spinning with 40g dexter wedges last summer from the brigg, I was hoping to get a decent pollack but all I got was a couple of small billet and the mackerel when they came in. Lost a lot of expensive lures too >:( >:(

Its as Dav says really that noone around here really tries it. I think uggy commented the other day that the east pier at Whitby was ok for this and I have witnessed some good pollock off the Whitby west pier although they fell mostly to worm baits fished off the bottom using the cork method.

I used to lose a lot of lures and if you don't risk losing them by fishing amongst the snags you won't catch many fish. I now use nice cheap leadhead/jelly worms.

It might be a bit too coloured up back end of this week Dave as it is NE all week. Its not forecast too strong though so it might be worth trying with bait and chuck the artificials and spinning rod in too for just in case.

You get some decent pollock on the Marine drive, you now need a small ladder to get down - pick a clear calm sea and a spring high (early morn best as it's peaceful and your less likely to get the"ave you caught out mister" lark), move to waters edge but watch your step - cast about 50 yards when the lure hits the deck start winding slowly back up - most takes are very close in - you will probably lose some gear so cheap jellies or redgills are fine - all in all on the right day it can be an enjoyable session
