Well Done To Ryan Vasey AKA Ryanfish For Winning The Whitby Fishing Club Junior Section.

Polite Notice

This is a sea angling forum for the debate of all angling related topics, including: shore fishing, boat and kayak fishing. Here you will find pictures of anglers going sea fishing and catching fish. You will find angling related debate. Sometimes anglers will retain fish for the table. Whilst we respect the personnal choice of anglers to follow catch and release practices, this is not a conservation forum and devout conservationists unable to accept anglers sensibly retaining fish should seek out alternative forums. Anyone preaching catch and release or criticising other peoples reports will have their posts removed.

i recently bought an electric cool box to go up to fife, mint it is, i used it to go to seahouses last week and put crab in it at 5.30am.  i did'nt fare to well in the newbiggin with only a 3.5lb kelpy for my eforts so i shot off to whitby and fished my club match.
the cool box kept the crab 100%, and i never lost a one, and it was a 16 hour journey for them :D

keep them COOL is defo the way for any type of peeler ::)

Well got my tank all set up now. Consists of a plasterers bath, a load of stackable containers to keep things seperate, a few powerheads, canister filter, airator and thats about it. Just need a cooler and im sorted.

Had 200+ peelers in it and havent lost a single one yet  ;D

Just got some velvets in today, theyre currently kicking the sh*t out of each other  ::) in the bottom tray. We shall see if that water quality is upto keeping the velvets.

Cheers for all the help chaps about what i needed etc to set it up. definately got me on the right lines.

Eye Glenn, been having a read. All very complicated really isnt it  ::)

I think ill start of with maybe a 60gallon tank, and see how it goes. Can always get another to double the volume. Think ill have a trip to BnQ at the weekend pic up some 8mm copper pipe, and a few bits and bobs and have a go at running a cooler thro the freezer and see how I get on.

Found a load of great info at http://www.glaucus.org.uk/wetthumb.htm . I guess you may have read it before, but I found some of the stuff on there a really good read. Id love to set up a marine aquarium like they mention on that site with native fish and that in.

just a thought lads but having kept salwater tanks for over twenty years (tropical and temparate) you may well be shooting yourselves in the foot, while with certainty you are on the right track with your efforts to cool the water unfortunately where you are solving one problem you are creating another serious one for yourselves

re:- using copper for cooling coils as it is one of the most toxic metals to marine life  a lot of medication intended for use in marine systems to control external parasites on fish are based on copper as the main active ingredient (and the bulk of the parasites we are talking about here are in fact small crustations
and one of the intructions  that is usually found is that where invertebrates are present (crustations) copper cannot be used. if you allow copper or even brass
in contact with the water then it will corrode it and release copper into the water which will increase over time to cause rising levels of copper and as levels rise the likely effectiveness of being able to keep stuff alive for even more than a few days will decrease.

i successfully kept cod ,wrasse , and gurnard at a temprature of 12 degrees for over four years  using a beer cooler with stainless steel coils

-which i still have if anyone is interested in it.

Cheers for that mate,

Its ok tho, decided against the copper and im looking for a second hand beer cooler atm. Im making do with ice packs to cool the water in the meantime.  :)

I have gravel under the rocks and a filter in my pump Glenn which seems to do the job.
