Hi Phil,

Sounds complicated but its not mate  :) Its a piece of cake and once running will save you so much time.

I see you mention setting up a water cooling system. Will you be using a fridge or a freezer ? I will be really interested to see how you get on. Would you mind keeping us informed ?  :) :)

Cheers - Glenn

No problem, Ill let you know how I get on.

Im debating whether to use the fridge or the freezer. The freezer would be better for obvious reasons but I dont know whether the warm water going in would create a lot of condensation when in the freezer and I'd just end up with a massive mess of frost like when you accidentally leave the freezer door open. Or if it would be a bit too much work for the freezer and just knacker it in no-time.

Ill have a think and see what seems best. Ill get something knocked up and see how it turns out. Thats if I cant persuade the local landlord that he has one that he doesnt really need  ;)

Hi Ray,

How long do these things take to run at their coldest ? Should it be on for an hour or so before you start running water through it and How long do you run them for, Are they on constant or have you got yours on a timer or something ? The one I aquired has 2 outlets should I use both ?

Cheers - Glenn

Hi Glenn, you can let it chill first but make sure you have fresh water inside it upto the overflow outlet. You will only need use 1 of the outlets. Depending on the strength of your pump, you may have to syphon it just to get it going. Try to get the top of your bait tank something like level with the bottom of the cooler. I don,t know what pump you,ve got but if it,s quite powerfull, make sure you also have the bulk of the water bypassing the cooler as it will put a lot of strain on your pump if you are trying to pump all the water through the cooler. Tomorrow morning your water will be cold. You can switch it off if you feel the need but there is a built in thermostat which will cut in when it reaches a set temp.

Just had a quick bash at knocking up a DIY cooler today with a freezer and some copper pipe.

A few coils of copper pipe in the bottom freezer tray

A few holes in the side of the freezer to plumb it thro

And connect it to a pump in a bucket of water for a little test.

Gonna give it a proper test tommorow. Did give it a quick blast but had only just turned the freezer on so it wasnt down to a desent cold temperature but it did still seem to cool it down. Dont know by how much tho.

We shall see anyways,....

Looking good Phil :) :) Please keep us posted.

I was very lucky to get hold of a beer chiller. It was a stroke of good luck. Just happened to notice one of the local pubs was getting refitted so had a word with the guy and he gave me the last one for a tenner. Top bloke.  ;D ;D

I've had a little test with my new toy and all seems fine. Should be able to relax a bit more on them hot summer days now (if they ever arrive - Its freezing again outside).

Nice bit of luck that glenn, been having a look around for one aswell. The copper pipe only cost me a tenner like, and everything else was already there so if I happen to find a flash cooler ill have it anyways. Not lost much really.

Haha we have to have some hot summer weather sometime. My guess would be an indian summer. Nice calm weather just when you dont want it  ::)

This is how mine,s set up Glenn (sorry about the sketch   ;D  ) I have 3 lengths of 2x2 underneath a sheet of Marine ply, which is drilled all over with a 5mm bit. I,ve cut and fastened an offcut of ply to form a partition which is secured with those plastic blocks which are used on kitchen units. The partition needs to be about 6in above the water level to stop the inmates escaping into you pump area   ;D  Cover the ply with some 20mm gravel which offers some voids for crap etc and stops the crabs stirring it up when they go on walkabouts   ;D
If the gravel is too small it blocks the holes and the crabs bury into it   :P
If you,re rubbish at joinery   ;D  put some foam pipe lagging around the edges of the ply, especially the partition. The water will then do a circuit of the tank and will filter each time.

I forgot to mention that you will need a 6in piece of pipe to return the fresh water back into your chiller but it should have a piece on already. It sounds complicated but when you,ve done it it looks after itself.

all seems like a lot of bother for nothing when all you need is a few tanks with u/g fillters, and a regular addition of icepacks in freezerbags, not full in the water but suspended so the icepack slowly releases its cool, it keeps the water gin, and you only need it while the velvs are on, as ray said you can keep shore at any temp, although i do like to keep them cool(they seem split quicker, as do the velvs), but once you are back to shore crab only, you dont need to bother so much. :)

If you,re rubbish at joinery   ;

How did ya know ??

Joinery is something that I cant do.

Is there any chance of a bigger pic Ray ?

This is the chiller I got. It has 2 ins and 2 outs then the ones with the pipe attached are labelled water - Dont know what this is for ?

This is my current system. I will have to think of someway of getting the chiller inline. Hopefully I should be able to use Gravity ? But I have a spare pump if needed. No rush though as I wont be able to get any more crabs for a good while now.

The pipe you mentioned is just to return the chilled water back into the chiller, remember this water has to be fresh water ,not sea water    :o

You,re right Lobbers, no need for green crabs and might seem like a messing on for velvets but for such as you who gets whites they are the mutt,s nut,s. Put a couple of hundred snakes in with a few inches of coal dust then forget about them. Same goes for rag or lug. It,s a pain keeping them in a fridge especially when one dies and knackers the rest   :'(

I honestly think the secret to your velvets surviving in a regular unchilled tank is getting them home quickly in good condtion.
If the weathers warm i use ice packs in my bucket and don't hang about too long.  I quite happily keep them in 2in of water in an unchilled tank.
I recently put one which wasn't a peeler(bit too enthusiastic that day ;)) in a spare tank in 2in of water and no pump and It lived for over a week til I could return it, it was able to stick its head out for air, although I certainly think they are better kept in a cool tank as Ramrods,, its not impossible to keep them without the means to turn your shed into a lab :D :D :D ;D

So that,s why you go on your bike   :o  Some things it works for and others it dosn,t. Crabs will last for ages but my wife only lasted a couple of minutes   ;D
In winter when I,ve got to get a few whites out I,ve got to run into the house every 30 seconds or so and stick my hand under the hot water tap it,s so cold. But they love it, I think.  ;D

Glenn, on the top of your chiller there will be a plug or some access to fill up your chiller. Take the red plug out of the front of your chiller and fill it up with fresh water untill it starts to flow out of the outlet then put the red plug back in. Inside the chiller is an impeller which is basicly a little whisk to circulate the cold water around the cooler pipes. It is also a small pump and pumps the water out of the outlet, that pipe on the front just returns it back into the cooler. Inside the cooler are the cooling pipes which are surrounded by fresh water, hopefully   ;D   Also inside are coiled pipes in which your sea water travels through. As it travels through the cold water in the resevoir cools the sea water, same system as Phils really.
