This is a sea angling forum for the debate of all angling related topics, including: shore fishing, boat and kayak fishing. Here you will find pictures of anglers going sea fishing and catching fish. You will find angling related debate. Sometimes anglers will retain fish for the table. Whilst we respect the personnal choice of anglers to follow catch and release practices, this is not a conservation forum and devout conservationists unable to accept anglers sensibly retaining fish should seek out alternative forums. Anyone preaching catch and release or criticising other peoples reports will have their posts removed.

Shakespeare Long Rods
« on: September 10, 2008, 08:40:24 AM »
Im digging for a bit of info here. Having had a go with Iains K2 red metal I have learnt what these rods can do for those without the time to learn to cast well with a standard size beach caster. Im 50/50 at the moment about getting one. Recently I was speaking to Dennis Thompson who said he had used a similar rod (not the red metal). I arent sure if he said it belonged to Chris or Phil France ??

So can anyone tell me if theres a similar rod to the red metal and how does it compare for casting distances.

To be honest I'm still 50/50 with mine, there are certain situations that suit the rod and others when I prefer my normal set up, I am trying some 50 lb braid later this week so the "pendulum" may swing as it were - one advantage I find is when I'm using heavier leads and a big bait and it's wet, like last night, as I suffer from thumb slippage with the multi, this is of course eliminated with the K2

Bumped into the man himself last night Chris France and he said the rod Dennis had told me about was a Shakespeare Titatanium. Is anyone else using this version ? Chris said out of the Red metal and the Titanium that he much preferred the latter is it was a far lighter rod but still capable of doing the job.

This bloke is not too impressed with the Titanium:

shakespeare k2 extreme titanium 15ft (multi)

I picked up this rod last summer and paid 100-140 pounds for it (sorry can't find receipt) its rrp is £260 What can i say i love this rod but it has had some problems. I still remember the first cast i stuck my abu rocket on it and stuck on a 5oz lead, laid the lead on the ground behind me and let rip,WOW the lead disapeared and i stood there listening to the spool howling splosh. The rod cast with ease but is also quite soft meaning it is really only suited to clean beaches and if the sea picks up it has a lot of tip movement compared to other rods i have. The rod is a great summer rod and picks up small flounder and dab bites but also handles bigger fish with ease(caught a few 5-6lb bass on it which was a nice fight, but that is a different story) It is a 3 piece rod and is made from high modulus carbon with a titanium x wrap(what ever that means)and is rated to cast up to 200gr(recomended casting weight 175 gr),the butt has a green/black finish cross weave and a black rubber hand grip and is supplied with coasters(nasty). The tip has is a high viz white to help you see it in low light. The rod is one of my favorites but it has let me down, first the rubber on the the very bottom of the butt fell off, not a problem glued it on after searching the beach for about an hour for it.Next the sic guides are made of cheese and almost monthly one would pop out(Have since replaced all guides with fuji ones and had no problems) This lets down a otherwise blinding blank and if i had paid £260 for it i would have been a little upset. Like i say i love this rod and have also added an abu grip lock and as it is 3 piece it fits in the boot of my car easily, i would recomend this rod but beware budget for new guides and a grip lock(£260 rod and coasters, my greys rod cost less and have grip locks)and don't pay full rrp At around the 100 pound mark it is a bargain and i could of given it full marks it it hadn't had problems(or came with different guides and a grip lock)

Not too good..............

I bought the K2 Red Metal Twin Tip earlier this year, soft tip casts up to 150g and stiff tip casts up to 200g (7oz)

Its a good job i dont have a beach spike, at 16ft 8in you would get a stiff neck. lol

Very nice rod but does nothing for my casting, after using a multi for so many years and then trying

to go back to an egg beater is no fun at all.

There was only about 2 yards different between the K2 and my good old pro skyer (14ft multi)

So if you want a play with the K2 Glenn i'll pm you when i'm coming to whitby fishing
