And I thought the French fisherman only smoked 'Gitanes'

Oh, and brought British motorways to a standstill :surprise:

We had a nearly a tonne of live lobster packed for France this morning, then when the gaffer found out there was no ferry sailing to Boulogne, they all went back into the tanks, saw my first ever baby lobsters today,a buried hen had given birth in the tanks, they were about 3 or 4 mm long,no wonder they have all on to survive to adulthood...tight lines

Is it true the mesh sizes of these foreign boats are  smaller than the legal size of uk nets ?

Steersers the man who could answer that one for you Dav. There was another French boat in port tonight landing 250 boxes of mixed fish. I was talking to my neighbour yesterday and they had had to dump most of their fish midweek as they were out of quota.

More Info Here.

Unhappy skippers but Mr Arnold Locker isn't standing by them on this occasions. Why not ?

Arnold is one of the leading lights in "alliance fish". I would say they they are acting agents for the french boats that are landing into whitby.
He also owns a fish processing factory, so he can't really lose.
If the local boats can't land fish..where's he going to buy it?..

but isnt Arnold Locker of Locker Trawlers one of the biggest operators in Whitby ... ? why would he not complain ... or is this type of thing a regular occurance in Eastern UK ports .. ?

It must really piss off the local skippers as you say ....... !

wasn't it the one and the same  mr Locker & co :surprise: at the hub of the successful 'black-fish landings prosecution brought by defra against the majority of the whitby trawling fleet in recent years ???? (2006 i believe)

Was talking to my neighbour and he reckons the UK fishing fleet is on its arsse. Something else I heard from another source was that all the Whitby boats are up for sale ? and the whole French fleet in the north sea are to use Whitby as their base ?

If that's the case its a very sad day indeed. In the past I have never been a big fan of the fishing industry but in recent times they have had to deal with a lot and with fish stocks on the increase they should have a good future if managed properly, and surely they don't deserve to be replaced by the French

Cannot believe the number of boats for sale there St. There must be something going on in the fishing business.
I enjoyed looking through them and would love to own one but the running costs must be horrendous even if you didnt go anywhere.

I mean , i dont really have a clue when it comes to trawlers and bylaws etc etc ,
But stopping the uk lads from landing certain fish , having to have bigger mesh sizes in there nets etc , yet they go and let the frogs and the spics come into our waters hoovering whatever they want up and having small mesh in there nets , then having the bloody cheek to let them land there fish  in a well known brit fishing port right under the noses of our boys just doesnt seem right to me like . . whats going on am i missing summit here or dont io have the facts right or what ......very strange indeed ......

I think there are other factors at play like Dav as it all works on a quota system and once yours is gone its gone. I know the Whitby boats landed there fair share of Whiting in the first 3 months of the year.

Maybe Steerser could tell you more but I know they also trade and buy quota and also when its all divied up at the start of the season certain countries get more of one type than another - I know the Dutch opt for a lot of soul quota at the expense of other species, there is also trades with other non eu countries like Norway.

I really don't know the exact ins and outs but it isn't as simple as were not allowed to fish and they are. One concerning thing is that these French boats are landing mixed fish with a high percentage of whiting - so what is happeing to all the cod they catch as I dont think they will be able to avoide getting some in the nets.

it isn't just the French Boats unloading their catches that is
a kick for our fishing fleets.
the costs of deisel has trebled in the past few months as well.

I guess that just proves that the car manufacturers, the government and the oil companies all want us to rely heavily on fossil fuels, so they can convince us theres a shortage and charge us the earth.

Im buying a scooter  :cheesy: and a trailer for my kayak
