This is a sea angling forum for the debate of all angling related topics, including: shore fishing, boat and kayak fishing. Here you will find pictures of anglers going sea fishing and catching fish. You will find angling related debate. Sometimes anglers will retain fish for the table. Whilst we respect the personnal choice of anglers to follow catch and release practices, this is not a conservation forum and devout conservationists unable to accept anglers sensibly retaining fish should seek out alternative forums. Anyone preaching catch and release or criticising other peoples reports will have their posts removed.

San Josie 3 - French Boats Landing Fish At Whitby
« on: May 15, 2008, 10:24:02 PM »
The French trawlers hit town tonight. This one allegedly landed 25 tonne of mixed fish - Whiting, Haddock and Cod. With a whiting ban now in place on UK vessels I understand there was some rather unhappy skippers about.

The second picture puts some perspective on the size of the boat with the average sized Whitby trawler in the background.

I wonder if there is a "Code Of Conduct"  for these boys ?

If it makes ME this angry  goodness knows how the local lads feel about the whole thing. I could rant on for ages about the whole thing but look at the effort put into the 10p tax thing and even that ended up been a half measure.

They are fishing off Whitby so they land at Whitby, the council get the port landing fees so they will be happy and make no complaints. There has been a large French Fleet off our coast for 2 years now. Because they operate just out of site most people don't even know they are there, but because the average angler sees a small boat chugging along the coast with a couple of gill nets then those boys get the blaim for any perceived lack of fish, I've always tried to get across to people that real problems go unseen by most. Like I mentioned in the first post on this topic - The wonderful angling representatives who dream up things like bag limits for sea anglers  and "codes of conduct" for tope anglers - Have they got a code of conduct for the 80 foot trawlers operating just out of view ? The amount of fish this guy took yesterday and every other day he fishes out there is obscene - were talking big trucks filled from front to back.

Heared this morning that they landed 3 ton of Mackral aswell which no Whitby boat can""" really rubbing the Whitby lads noses in it.
If it had been a British boat in a French port off loading it would not happen  there would have been a blockad of the port....

A message to the French fishing fleet    my :butt:

Interesting discussion on the situation of no quota for the UK boats. A person I havent always seen eye to eye with is Wurzel a commercial fishermen from the south of the country, but over a few years I have started to notice that a lot of what he was saying back then has started to make sense. His final words on the subject should ring alarm bells for any UK sea angler - I think he may be right
Quote
This fits in nicely with DEFRA's vision and the marine bill, I've always said they work to a set agenda, they know that in a few years the UK fleet will require very little management, they know there will be restrictions on inshore netting and destructive methods like trawling because there will be a large reduction in the boats fishing inshore, they assume this will lead to more and bigger fish, they know that MPA's are coming forced in by the environmentals and are assuming this will also help provide more and bigger fish, they also know that they will have very little else to do other than manage anglers who because of the reduction in inshore commercial fleet will be considered the main threat to inshore fish stocks.

but isnt Arnold Locker of Locker Trawlers one of the biggest operators in Whitby ... ? why would he not complain ... or is this type of thing a regular occurance in Eastern UK ports .. ?

It must really piss off the local skippers as you say ....... !

FINALLY evidence that our hard working fishermen are NOT totally to blame for declining stocks.Perhaps more people will be a little more sympathetic to our own fishermen and women now evidence is shown openly that the goverment of this country does not have control of its own territory. This is just totally wrong and would not be allowed to happen anywhere else in the world.
And all this during a "Ban" on UK landings.
