This is a sea angling forum for the debate of all angling related topics, including: shore fishing, boat and kayak fishing. Here you will find pictures of anglers going sea fishing and catching fish. You will find angling related debate. Sometimes anglers will retain fish for the table. Whilst we respect the personnal choice of anglers to follow catch and release practices, this is not a conservation forum and devout conservationists unable to accept anglers sensibly retaining fish should seek out alternative forums. Anyone preaching catch and release or criticising other peoples reports will have their posts removed.

Saltburn seems to traditionally have more float fishers than other places once the mackerel arrive.
I was wondering if the floats used there are made by the anglers themselves or if anyone locally makes and sells them.

I think they use floats more at salty is because  no one spins there because of the height. But you dont see many on the "cork" there and i'm not sure why?

Years ago we used to make floats out of balsa, but is it worth it now, as the polystyrene ones are fairly cheap anyway.

Floats are just so cheap these days. For little over £1 you can pick up the full set up - float, beads, weight and rubber band.

Float fishing for mackerel really is an art form. Its quite fun watching people who think its easy. They soon learn its not (Well it is once you've figured a few things out), but it certainly ain't like spinning for the buggers.
