This is a sea angling forum for the debate of all angling related topics, including: shore fishing, boat and kayak fishing. Here you will find pictures of anglers going sea fishing and catching fish. You will find angling related debate. Sometimes anglers will retain fish for the table. Whilst we respect the personnal choice of anglers to follow catch and release practices, this is not a conservation forum and devout conservationists unable to accept anglers sensibly retaining fish should seek out alternative forums. Anyone preaching catch and release or criticising other peoples reports will have their posts removed.

Salt water/ Brackish?
« on: August 03, 2007, 08:09:46 PM »
Some plugs are for salt w ater and some of the same type are for brackish water. Does anyone know what difference this makes to the plug. I can only assume that it,s because they dive a little deeper in different types of water  ??? anyone ? I think it maybe explains it on the back of the box but my Japanese is,nt what it used to be  :P

Now then ramrod , thought u must of been swept out to sea on them big tides weve had , either that or you had gone awol  ;D...i think all it is saying is the plugs for saltwater a fitted with saltwater proof hooks and the brackish ones will be for fresh water with normal brownish coloured hooks , which rot with saltwater ,,, i cant think of the name for them but no doubt thats what it will mean......the diving vane will make the lure work in both salt and fresh water the same ,,, rapala x raps come in fresh water and saltwater and the only difference is the hooks and the fresh water lure as a little feather on tail trebble....is this what you mean ?

I may be wrong. But here goes

Salt water has a higher specific gravity than fresh and brackish water and something that will float in salsilly hater may sink in brackish. Maybe a salt water  floating popper would actually sink in brackish so couldnt be sold as a popper. Not sure how that relates to your question and is probably of no use to you at all and is probably wrong :D :D.

Youve made me read a science experiment about how a golf ball floats in saltwater but not in fresh. I think I am on the edge of a breakdown. I think its just the hooks Ray  ;)

Well you,re all ignorant when it comes to fishing  ::) The answer is, which I knew all along is not the hooks, how stupid is that, because they,re exactly the same hooks in both types. It,s the size of the diving vane, because of the differing movement of surface water in the sea (choppyish) they are made to dive slightly deeper so it dos,nt interfere with the plugs movement thing. As for proffesor B.B. Hawkins answer, well, you can all draw your own conclusion,s. If anyone has any queries as regards plugs don,t hesitate to give me a ring or you could phone Veals where there is a very helpfull chap who I,ve never spoken to.  :-X
