rod advice - reelsport response, century tip tornado ??
« on: April 06, 2007, 09:55:58 AM »
Morning all , im after abit of advise about a new rod , at the moment im using a nemesis premiere for rough ground , a conoflex bass bandit for really light ground , for bass flatties etc , but im after a rod of about 13.6 that i can use for mixed ground , matches etc were bite indication is really important yet its got to be light and its got to be able to with stand a powerfull cast with a 60z lead on and a big bait , ,i was actually gona replace my premiere with a heavy rod but decided to keep that for me rough stuff and get it re ringed ,only because im missing a middleweight rod that i can use for mixed ground and get really good bite indication , i know of a century tip tornado , reelsport response built rod which seems to fit the bill nicely , which i,m considering ,
Does anyone know of the reelsport response rod and what its like , or does anyone have any reccomendations for a rod to fit the bill. also what rods do yourselfes use  for the rough , mixed and clean ground ...? cheers

The Reelsport rod is as good a rod as you,ll find Dav, and is at home on rock as it is on the beaches whith probably the best tip as I have seen, but it has plenty of backbone.

Reelsport ? Until now I knew nothing of it. Is reel sport the manufacturer ? What sort of price are they ?

I use a Nitra for everything at the moment. I've always liked Greys. Spent an hour chatting to lobbers on the phone the other night. He says Centuary are fantastic rods.

Glen i think reels sport is just a company who build rods , possibly on century blanks , this particular rod im going on about is a century blank  badged up as reelsport response built by a guy called terry woods ,ithink its a tip tornado ,  the price for this one is 180 quid , its been used once or twice though , but apparantly its like brand new  i think the normal retail for this type of rod is 270 i think , ive heard of reelsport rods before but thought ide ask other peoples opinion , yeah i think lobbers swears by century  , as hes said before ,,

That's interesting Dav. The name Terry woods seems to ring a bell, is he an angler from these parts ?

Your,e right Dav in what you said, Terry Wood,s from Hebdon. It used to be called the Longbeach when it first came out but they had to change the name because Penn had a rod by the same name. It,s a fantastic rod. On a beach in tide the tip bends round lovely but it will cast a 7oz lead with a big bait on no trouble, buy it!

The reel sport "BLue Thunder" are bloody good rods aswell, can bang out big baits and 6 oz, also has a slightly lighter tip than the Response

if i had to pick one of the 2 for mixed ground it would be the blue thunder

Agree with Ramrod, Macky, etc. I've had one for a few years, & apart from originally thinking it was a bit stiff in the tip (it was, but only compared to my usual Zzippys) it's a great rod.

Spoke to Terry before I bought it - apparrently the blank is made by Century, but to Terry's spec - I believe, however, that the starting point was the Tip Tornado. Give him a call, he's a very helpful guy. Think his website's www.reelsport.co.uk....or maybe .com. you'll get the phone number off there.

Great build quality as well, although the original shrink tube was a bit thin for being bashed about round the rocks.

Hope this helps. If anyone wants a go with mine drop me an email & I'll see if I can sort something out. Also got a VMax F1 - another great rod (I know Ramrod might disagree ;D) to compare it with if you want.

Cheers

That would be great to have a few casts with the rod before buying , but i think your abit far away for me i,m in boro mate, although from what ive heard it sounds a good buy and am seriously considering it , and i`m sure its gona be alot lighter and less stiffer than the premiere ive been using , it will probably feel like a carp rod compared with the beast i use 99% of the time . cheers for the "response" lads.....boom boom ....Dave

They are quiet soft right thru mate, but they are no light weight

its hard to explain but they have a lot more "tourqe" than most rods
True they are a out an out rock/mixed ground rod / heavy beach rod
but very easy casting

So what is the response then ? Is it a rock rod or a beach rod ? how would it cope with the rough ground with heavy Kelp ?? Eg Hawsker, boulby, kettlness and runswick (the rocky part) ? Or is it just for the softer ground ?

It will cope with anything around here no probs. It,s a strange rod, it,s got a flexible tip with great bite detection and you would swear that it would fold up with a good bait matched with a big lead but it doesn,t. You,ve got to give credit to Terry for it,s design he got it spot on, top rod. I,m a zziplex fan but if it wasn,t for the fact that i,d just bought a new one i,d have got a Reelsport.
The V Max rods seem to vary from different reports. They are very user friendly, light and have great bite detection but the one i had wasn,t for me. I took it to Flamborough for a trial run and put a 7oz lead on with a good bait and it folded on me. It,s more of a through action which dosn,t suit me as I need to load the rod quickly with my style of casting where as Mart has a swing and has more time to load it up, tell me if i,m wrong Mart. I had 6 casts at Flam with it and caught 6 cod then sent it back ;D

Ramrod

You're probably not wrong mate.

I remember you turning the F1 round sharpish a while ago. At the time I'd got one on order after my Greys SRX went the way that all SRX's did...unfortunately Zziplex's legendary customer relations  ::) came up trumps & I was still waiting for it nearly a year later. I then went to live in Holland for a year & cancelled the order (your experience had made me a bit nervous anyway!!) - it actually came into the shop a couple of weeks later & Jeremy Robinson bought it, & did pretty well with it!! I think he still uses it, even though he wiped nearly all the rings out in one go when he let go of it on the Drive one night & it bounced down the accropodes!! - that's the good thing about zzippy's, tough as old boots!!

When I got back from Holland I,  got the Longbeach, then shortly after that I captured an unused F1 on impulse from eBay, paid £200 from a shop in Blackpool. Funny thing is, my mate Crossey has an F1 of a similar age & it's slightly shorter, & different diameters (tips aren't interchangeable by a couple of mm) - haven't cast it, though, so cant say whether its a different action.

6 fish in 6 casts from Flamborough.... :o No wonder you got rid of it ;D

It,s true Glenn Andy B was there but I wasn,t impressed with the rod. The next rod I got was the Zziplex HST.First time out with it I  and went down Runswick which I,d only fished once before when Dennis took me down in the team knockouts. Caught a double which won me the match, think I got 2nd heaviest fish 6.5lb and heaviest bag. Witnesed by Kilpatrick no2  ;D

As soon as you mentioned Runswick there Ray I just knew what you were going to say. Kilpatrick No2 told me all about it - several times.

Big ebb tide if I remember rightly ? Was it the redcar match ?

That,s right Glen. I went to Boulby first, got there before anyone else but decided against it. Went to Runswick and as it ebbed it looked better and better. There was 2 banks of kelp with a channel in between which just screamed fish. Only been back there once since.

I know where you mean Ray. I've always been reluctant to fish there on that tide due to no real alternatives if the fish aren't in the few places you can chuck. But having heard your story and I know someone else who does very well where you mentioned I might try it more often. I love that area though - that's where I had my PB best bag and fish both on the same night.
