This is a sea angling forum for the debate of all angling related topics, including: shore fishing, boat and kayak fishing. Here you will find pictures of anglers going sea fishing and catching fish. You will find angling related debate. Sometimes anglers will retain fish for the table. Whilst we respect the personnal choice of anglers to follow catch and release practices, this is not a conservation forum and devout conservationists unable to accept anglers sensibly retaining fish should seek out alternative forums. Anyone preaching catch and release or criticising other peoples reports will have their posts removed.

My Prawns, due to the lack of fishing activity, are starting to look a bit tasty  :P  There have been no deaths in my tank up to press apart from the odd one after a trip out. I,ve started feeding them too with a bit of crab as some of them have been in captivity for a while now. Got to be a bit carefull when disturbing them as they almost jump clean out of the tank.

What type of fish would you lads use them for, given the differing types of fishing you do, an how would you fish them.
A mega Prawn sandwich  :o  will be winging it,s way to the lucky angler who gives the most intresting and informative answer!

:o Thats what Andy B said this morning. He was near you yesterday I think Chris.

Would it be worthwhile float fishing them for Bass if the water is coloured?

Thats what I was wondering. If skate find them by scent will the Bass do the same thing if the water is coloured, as it usually is on the Holderness. Plus you have the addition of movement which they probably sense?

The thing is ramrod , i doubt if there would be much scent coming off a live prawn , i would supose it would be like using a hard crab , more for visibility , unless you mash it onto the hook and bind it on so the scent would flow out , then you would be defeating the object of keeping them live ,which is the way to go when floatfished ...especially for bass , but thats just my opinion,,, ive used them for cod fishing but when they are dead , as you probably know ray  ...i know bass must hunt on scent somtimes but a majority of the time i suspect it be visibility..but why dont you wait until they peel ramrod and have a run to holderness n try with them  .......im no expert like

Think Davs right here - are the flat fish been caught on dead prawn? if so it would be scent - or if they are live do they have a better sense of whats moving on the sea floor? - but I suppose it all boils down to confidence in approach, yes  I'm told that plugs work in cloudy water with vibrations but if it's not clear I arn't confident - if it was cloudy and I was floating I would be more confident with a strong scented bait thats met it's maker - however I may be wrong

Think Davs right here - are the flat fish been caught on dead prawn? if so it would be scent - or if they are live do they have a better sense of whats moving on the sea floor? -
Im sure rays are built like sharks and hunt by electrical impulse , aswell as scent,,, so i supose fishing live or dead in coloured water would be more suited to ray fishing as appose to bass as if theres no smell from the live prawn they would pick it up by electrical signals in the sand/water , wereas bass use scent and mainly sight to find there food , although i do realise all fish use the lateral line thing to pick up signals etc but i would have to say the lateral line would be mostly used to aid the fish in navigating the sea bed etc coloured water .

I to know catching fish by sight and movement is possible in very coloured water think of sea trout etc , but i tend to think the lure would have to be right in front of the fish to shock it for the fish to attack it, which is quite easy in a river a few yards wide , but in the sea ..all that big sea it would be harder for you to locate the fish and put your lure in its face ,vibrations are also good but again think if the waters coloured fish are attuned to hunt by other means other than sight and the best one in coloured water in my eyes is scent , so like quint said itsa possible but due to lack of luck in hitting the spot with ure lure you have very little success and confidense drops ,,,,,,in them conditions .....

You daft bugger  ;D

I must admit you,d probably have to be pretty patient if you used them in coloured water. I know what you mean about the scent Dav, even when fishing for Cod who are masters at finding a bait I like plenty of scent in the water but in reality they could probably smell even a washed out piece of crab from a long way off. I often wonder if we underestimate their prowess in detecting food. For example, In massive sea,s on rock I,ve had cod that were stuffed with small hardback crabs, how do they find a bait that we would consider scentless or feel a vibration in a huge disturbed sea. Even tiny little eggs or one blowlug. Funily enough I was watching the bearded burbler today catching Baramundi in a river that was chocolate and they were taking their lures as soon as they hit the water, amazing.
