Before i add a lot of crab to the tank i always put them into a bucket of seawater to try and get rid of a lot of the muck off the crab, although i do still get a bit of sedement in the water, i part change the water taking out a few buckets of water from the tank and adding a few fresh buckets of sea water on a weekly basis and cleaning out the filter every so often helps keep the water clean...

ye the pump has a filter in it but not UV. what sort of price are they? that looks a mint set up gary. thanks for the info lads

changed most of the water for tonight hopfully can get a uv tomorrow

Yeah it is a good set up like , them ibc`s are the way to go like , surface area ,surface area .

here is my set up a bit different to garys but it seems to work well,the only thing is i made them a bit deep but it doesnt seem to get too hot.the pump is in a 4 foot fish tank at the bottom and i just need the uvfilter at certain times of the year.

Basically the same type of set up as me maxie except ive used 20 gallon water tanks and joined em together with 2 " connectors and submersed me pump in a 5 gallon tank at the end of the line, back upto me filter box then gravity into both boxes , creating plenty of oxygen as well as a airstone ...i am like you and think my setup is abit on the deep side , i would of liked more surface area but dont have the space unfortunatly , So far so good tho , ive had crab in them consistantly for 4 to 5 weeks now and so far only had one casualty

, i think the advantage of me set up all be it abit deep is because of the depth of water , it takes longer to heat up and water cooling is working ok so far , plus i think more water equals healthier crabs ,,,,,,You say you use a uv through summer ....? What does this achieve ? are you using it to just kill the algae ? , funny you should mention it ,ive just had to repair me dads pond uv as the internal ballast blew......

yes dav two inch connectors would have been better for me as only one outlet would have been needed

the uv has only been needed for bigger crab the smaller ones dont seem to need it.

Yup I think you are,for the rocks , yes different baits have their place on some days ,mussel,snake whites,black lug worm, a big fresh black can sometimes out fish crab at certain times of the year, but look at what most of the successful rock anglers spend there summer doing ? Collecting crab for the winter matches so unless they are missing something ?

I just never had much success with peeler Maybe I'm presenting it wrong or summat? I probably am missing something But Id still rather take Lug and Mussel even on the rocks. It just doesnt seem to work for me?

My Uv filter comes in if I get algie in the water ? Have you not had a situation where the water goes very cloudy and you cant see the bottom ? When this happenes in my tank on goes the UV and you wake up next morning to crystal clear water.

Funny that glen as my water hasnt gone cloudy as yet and its been up n running for a while now i gather there is polenty of time for that tho , i have noticed tho there appears to be abit of doggy do doe at the bottom which doesnt appear to be moving through the tanks to the filter mmm , ive just been tending to them and i was thinking how to get rid of it ...The crabs them selves seem to be having a good time tho , any ideas ? cheers

It will be crab doggy do do Dav and muck thats come off their gills. If you put an inch off gravel in the bottom it will fall between and will prevent it from swilling around. The crabs settle better too instead of doing laps around the tanks

If your tanks are deep dav make some cages out of the small mesh chicken wire the shape of your tanks then you can just lift the cage out when you need to check them.

Yeah i actually thought about ure set up ray with the gravel in the bottom and considered it , i think i will end up doin that , just any gravel that has been steeped in boiling water i gather ?
at first i did have a problem with crabs escaping from the baskets i was using , i was given a basket with mesh over , which i submerse with crab in which are no were near ready , then i have knocked a couple of other baskets up out of mushroom baskets and joined em together with tie wraps which hold my some were near , and almost ready crabs .......cheers

i just get mine out with a fish net it stirs the crap up and it seems to move it through the system.

I just leave all that crap in the bottom Dav and the tank gets a clean once a year in spring and I take it out then, but like Max says, stirring it up can help it on its way into the filter

Not sure what sets the algal bloom off. Dont know if putting dechlorinated tap water in can do it ? or if its the heat or what. I know people who run chillers say their tanks never go cloudy so maybe it is related to water temps. Im not talking about sediment/mud/silt in the water the filter takes care of that (judging by the colour of the sponges). Its more like a foggy colour in the water and you cant see the bottom in a couple of inches. Like I say on goes the UV and the water comes clear again. Its a strange thing to happen.

Not sure about sunlight Dave as my tanks inside, unless its the lack of sunlight ? I think I read something about tap water contributing to algie growth but might have been wrong. Do other people add tap water when the salt level goes up ?

I use tap water Glenn infact i use synthetic sea salt mixed with tap water to fill my tanks, as i cant be bothered running to and from the the coast when i want to part change the water.. but i must admit i dont use a uv filter and i dont suffer from algie..
