over 2 weeks from the very start. Well thats how long Ive had definate peelers in the tank before they have shed. Obviously warmth and water quality will speedup/slow the process

took delivery of 200 today.100 for my mate and 100 for me.whilst sorting them out 41 of mine had cracks in their shells which i put into my tank.the other's went into the fridge.27 of those put into the tank have now peeled and are now in the freezer.the rest from the tank have gone into the fridge overnight to hold them back and will be put back into the tank in the morning.put 25 of the non cracked shelled ones into the tank before coming to bed so hopefully they will be ready to peel tomorrow.

IMO.... If they have a crack in the side get them peeled down and in the freezer a.s.a.p..., if they are hard and in the early stages of the peeling process then keep them in the tank to bring them on, then take them out when they are starting to crack and freeze them down, i think if you leave them to come out of the shell they will be full of water and past there best for fishing....Just my opinion though..

I was going to say the same Garry, although there was a few differing opinions last year. As soon as my crabs have the slightest crack in them they are peeled and into the freezer. Its a little easier to peel them the longer you leave them but once they come out they fill up with water.

no glenn i'm just waiting for them to crack all the way round and the shell to lift slightly then i'm peeling them.let one go a little bit further and it was swollen with water and seemed ready to burst.

can anyone give me a few tips regarding keeping peelers in a tank as this is the first time i've done it. what temperature does the water need to be? how deep does it need to be? do you feed the crabs whilst they are in the tank? do i need to have a filter and air pump running all the time? how often should i change the water?
cheers
tim

You could keep a few with no problems Tim in cat litter trays or any box/tanks. Crabs don't need a right lot of water, maybe just enough to cover their backs if you want to tank them. Its usually best to keep the water fairly fresh, changing it at least every couple of days. Air stones and clean water are beneficial. Another option is just in trays in the fridge. It will slow them down but they will still peel and your less likely to loose many this way. just give them some water for a few mins on a daily basis. The temp in my Fridge is around 5 degrees c and this seems to slow them up. I occasionally turn the fridge off for a few hours to get the temp up, but I dont like to do that for too long. If you want to stop them peeling then keep them cold and dry. Another option (more expensive) is a tank. Myself Ray and chopper have variations of the same theme. If ever your down this way then feel free to pop in and Ill show you my set up.

Alot of trouble to go to I think peeler crab is over rated Ive never had much luck with them I wouldnt bother messing about with them. Unless... I must be missing something? Are they really that good a bait?
I prefer Lug worm to peeler

Yup I think you are,for the rocks , yes different baits have their place on some days ,mussel, snake whites, black lug worm, a big fresh black can sometimes out fish crab at certain times of the year, but look at what most of the successful rock anglers spend there summer doing ? Collecting crab for the winter matches so unless they are missing something ?

Any efforts you can make to get a supply into your freezer will pay dividends at the required time. Certainly through the autumn months you can expect that anyone with peelers will do the business, wheras anyone without will be wondering what is going on

I,ve never counted mine Rob but I try to get as big a crab as possible as they tend to keep better for a longer period I have found. I fill 3 lockable plastic boxes that I,ve had for a few years if possible. If i can do that I know I will have enough crab to fish the open matches and a few others besides. I find that "numbers" of crab can be misleading as they vary so much in size, for example 1 crab can make 4 big baits or 4 crabs can make 1 bait so the biggie is the equivelant to 16 small ones. Not much help to anyone trying to judge the ammount of crab needed for the coming season I know, but it,s a more reliable way to go by volume.

currently got a tank on the go with about 50ish peelers in it! Been going real well for a month steady stream of peelers coming until this weekend when the tank had about 80 in it? the water seems to be going cloudy is this due to the hot weather or the amount of crabs? my tank is a plasterers bath. Any info? Cheers Robocod

i like my crab to be bright yellow on the underbelly when i freeze them the juice seems more concentrated than when the backs lifting off them, just letting my thumb nail grow back a bit before the next lot

Are you filetring the water ? It sounds like you've got an algal bloom in the water wwhich I think is the heat which brings it on if so you need an ultra violet filter. Turn it on and the water will be crystal clear in the morning. Or another way is a chiller which means the water never gets warm enough for the algie to grow.
